Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow at times, hard to customise without a bit of tech knowledge, no criteria for browsing.

When talking about the phenomenon of blogging, most people instantly think of people writing an online diary or weblog. This is where the name 'blog' originated from: web (from the World Wide Web) and log (as in keeping a log). It's not the hardest mouthful of words to pronounce, but it's been shortened to blog all the same. Since the first 'blogs' appeared in 1994, the act of recording thoughts and experiences online has grown. Today, blogging is a huge internet phenomenon. The terms 'weblog' and 'blog' didn't appear until later, though it's been said that blogging has existed for much longer ... more

What is a Blog? While I go make myself a cuppa, I'll let blogger.com themselves explain... "A blog is a web page made up of usually short, frequently updated posts that are arranged chronologically—like a what's new page or a journal. The content and purposes of blogs varies greatly—from links and commentary about other web sites, to news about a company/person/idea, to diaries, photos, poetry, mini-essays, project updates, even fiction." A place where you can say exactly what you want to say, when you want to say it - your own personal forum for thoughts, stories or information. What could be ... more

Advantages Advantages Blogs are windows on other people's worlds..

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not everyone out there has an interesting world!

Bloggers stand up. (or sit down under a bedspread in Leeds, in an office in Washington, in a bombed out IT centre in Iraq or from your hospital bed…) This is real life, this is the world as seen from you lot out there - (y)our loves, losses, joy and pain. Blogging is the new black/brown/white/yellow/green (delete as appropriate) Blogs (or weblogs) are open diaries full of views, opinions, pictures, music and links to other sites. Hey some blogs apparently just link to other blogs and you can hop along in a circle! I started one in January, with Blogger.com. (http://transplantwait.blogspot.com) ... more

If you don't know blogging is the latest thing to take over the web. It allows people to keep a diary on the World Wide Web, anyone can read. Often, they accept comments which allow others to comment on their entries. So where does the word 'blog' come from? Well weblog is too long, so take away the 'we' and guess what 'blog'. From the word blog words like blogger (not this service, someone who writes a blog), blogging and blogosphere came. The blogosphere is all the blogs on the net. Blogging's grew and grew, starting off with a humble blog in 1997, to an international craze, with a new one ... more

Advantages Advantages Freedom of Speech, you can share your thoughts with the world

Disadvantages Disadvantages Everyone has an opinion, you might not want to read them all!

Most of you reading this now are probably familiar with the term 'blogging'; one or two of you may have a blog of your own but I'd take a guess that the majority of readers out there are thinking "blogging is for Internet geeks." So how would you feel if I told you that the articles, reviews and little ditties that you write on Ciao are just another form of blogging? It's probably best, then, to clarify just what a blog is. The noun 'blog' is simply an abbreviation of what was originally termed a 'web log' which many people believe to mean nothing more than an online diary and in a lot of ... more

I guess we all dream about having our own little piece of space on the internet. It's nothing to do with fame; it's just somewhere that might just be there long after we have gone, or something someone might stumble upon. You could call it our own creative space. Though they were not necessarily know as Blogs from conception almost 15 years ago, these little pieces of Internet space have grown more and more in popularity. There are certain blogs that have become internet notorious, two women I can think of have done very well at Blogging, putting there innermost thoughts down for the world to ... more

For nearly eight years I wrote about my life in Cyprus, home education, and general ramblings, on a Geocities web-site. It worked well, but every time I uploaded a new page I had to remember to send photos separately, to ensure they were the right size, and to update all the relevant links. Not being very good with HTML (the language in which most web-sites are written), and inherently lazy, I tended to put it off. Early last year, my site started approaching the 15meg maximum, so I explored other options for continuing. My teenage sons told me I should start a 'blog'. The word blog, for ... more

I like BLOGGING, yes I like to BLOG… (Replace BLOG with TRUCK, and you can find the original as a joke song from Not the Nine O’Clock News, trivia fans…) When writing about BLOGGER, it’s inevitable that you will kick off the review with a pathetic pun, because it’s just TOO tempting to weigh in with the standard one liner, so please excuse me for my own little lapse in taste as a starter for 10… BLOG – type in define:blog in the Google search engine (there’s a little hint for you if you want the meaning of a word) and you get the response: “A blog is basically a journal that is available on ... more

Get yourself an Internet tool from blogger.com that once you use it you will wonder how on earth you managed without it. It is called a ‘Blog’. Yes, I am serious. It is called a Blog because it is a Web Log. (Say it fast. Weblog…we..blog) Get it? Ok. I really believe that it can be used and appreciated by internet newbies and experienced webmasters alike.
