4 Stars The Patron Saint of Beer! Review with images 23/11/2004

Advantages Advantages Tasty, rich and well balanced beer.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little on the common side and can be bad if not kept well.

I couldn’t believe it when I noticed that I hadn’t posted a review on Bombardier Bitter. It is a regular feature in one of my local pubs and one I have drunk on MANY occasions. I think by now I am pretty qualified to offer my musings on this traditional, and rather famous, premium ale. ~~~THE BREWERY. Bombardier Premium English Bitter is brewed by the Charles Wells Brewery. This is a family business that was founded in 1876 in Bedford and moved to the present location in 1976. The brewery, known as the Eagle Brewery, is apparently the fifth largest brewery in the UK and has been owned and run ... more

Advantages Advantages Readily available and very tasty

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not always available on draught

No, this review has nothing to do with Saddam's 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' - this review is based purely on solid facts..... One of the regular guest beers in my local pub, is BOMBARDIER...does that make sense? A regular guest? Or even spelling bombadier with an R? Anyway, as I said, quite often my local pub has Bombardier on tap and when it does, I always order a pint...unless I order something else, of course. So, considering I've drank this beer so often, it's about time I wrote a review about it...... • THE BREWERY • The Charles Wells brewery was founded in 1876 and is now the largest ... more

Advantages Advantages It's English, It's Imperial, It's Premium

Disadvantages Disadvantages The Safeway special might not last long.

I don’t know whether it has struck you but we have been surrounded over these last few days by an increased interest in St George and a controversy over who should be the patron Saint of England (The BBC Today programme has even suggested a move to St Thomas A’Becket.). St George’s Day of course is April 23rd. There have been suggestions that it should be moved to a Monday and made the subject of an extra Bank Holiday. There are societies who propose increasing St George fever in the same way that the other countries fete Sts. David, Patrick and Andrew. I have pursued this preamble to ... more

    Advantages Advantages A great pint

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not many!

One of the beers brewed by the Charles Wells family-owned brewery, Bombardier Bitter is a good and interesting pint of real ale as it should be. It clams to be a premium beer and, to be perfectly honest, I can't really find fault in the claim! It is 4.3 per cent volume alcohol. It has an attractive ruby colour to it and a complex taste that belies the simplicity of the brew. It is not too bitter, nor to sweet and drinks very well. There is an attractive and gentle hoppy bitter taste on the tongue after the mouth has been emptied. There's a sort of fruity note to Bombardier Bitter which means ... more
