When my daughter was little we had one scary occassion where she was very poorly and had to be taken to casualty because her temperature was so high it caused her to have a febrile convulsion (fit). At the time I only had a forhead temperature guage and when she was allowed home I was told to keep an eye on her temperature. I didn't feel that the forhead guage was exact enough so I bought a thermoscan. This is an excellent and accurate thermometer ...

...trawl around and found the Braun Thermoscan on special offer on the Boots website. Normally retailing at just under 40 pounds, we managed to pick it up for just under 30pounds, a real bargain. It really is so simple, switch it on, wait for 3 digital lines to appear, press the button, put it in her ear and within 2 seconds it beeps to tell you the temperture has been recorded. Thats it!! Simplicity. Now of course I then check time and time again ...
...with the same temperature each time so I feel quite confident about its accuracy. It comes with disposable earpieces so as not to spread any infection, very clear directions, and its own case for easy storage. Another great baby buy, I may be neurotic but from personal experience I know it is better to be safe than sorry, and if it only takes 2 seconds to be safe, then bring it on!! ...

Boots gave me a one year guarantee with it and Braun give a two year guarantee from the date of purchase which they say that they will eliminate free of charge any defects in the appliance or replace it, which i thought was pretty good. ...paid about £28 for a Braun thermometer using a discount voucher at the same time as there was a special deal on. The results are not 100% reliable - you sometimes get a significant under reading if you haven't pushed it far enough into the ear. However, its so much quicker and less invasive than the alternatives, that I find it better to use it a few times to get a consistent result than with the other thermometers. Its still probably worth owning ...

We bought the thermoscan a couple of years ago and I can honestly say it was worth every penny. It is very fast, takes temperatures in seconds and is very accurate. I used to gag on my old fashioned mercury under the tongue type and bought this with hidden doubts regarding the price. It took me three trips to Boots to finally pay for it! As all first time mothers to be I'm sure I bought dozens of items of baby equipment I could have survived without and that moved my mother and mother-in-law to make "never in our day" type comments about.
