Advantages Advantages Beautiful city, top university, friendly peole, great night life, loads to see and do

Disadvantages Disadvantages Oxbridge rejects may put people off, the cost of living is high once you are in private housing

I am in my third year at the University of Bristol and feel that I can write an honest review about being a student here. COURSES AVAILABLE There are a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses available to study including Bachelors and Masters Degrees as well as Doctorates and Higher Doctorates. The six faculties are:- - Faculty of Arts - Faculty of Engineering - Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Science - Faculty of Science - Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry - Faculty of Social Sciences and Law TEACHING The standard of teaching in my department and most others is exceptionally ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent, well recognised Univeristy, great social life, Biology excellent

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hilly, fairly expensive accomodation

I loved my time at Bristol Uni, and wish I had another year to go. In my first year I was in halls in Stoke Bishop, which involved a 40 minute trek in to uni everyday. There are halls in Clifton, only 10 minutes away, which also allow you to experience the nightlife more easily, however, most students are based in Stoke Bishop. There is a student bus which operates in the evening taking 'jolly' loads of students into town if you get bored with your hall bar. Hall food was pretty bad for me (I was in Badock - fab hall otherwise), and often you end up making your own food, so you might as well ... more

Advantages Advantages Being an old university, students benefit from the experience of the departments/faculties

Disadvantages Disadvantages expensive to live, friends thinking Bristol is full of Oxbridge rejects

Im actually now a second year, and over half way through my actual degree (a very scary thought!) I havent been on ciao for a while and thought i'd get back into the swing of things by updating a few opinions. About a year has past since i first wrote my opinion of Bristol University, so its about time i explain whats happened here in the last year. Finally, the construction of the new sports building is under way, and it should be ready by the beginning of the next academic year (oct 2002). It will replace the appalling excuse for a sports centre that is currently in Woodland house. The new ... more

Advantages Advantages good reputation; lovely department staff; good student support

Disadvantages Disadvantages facilities, student accommodation, high living expenses

When I first arrived in Bristol and saw the Wills Memorial Building - the law building, I was in awe of its architecture and when I visited the rest of the campus, I knew I had made the right choice of coming here to study instead of the other two universities that I've turned down. MY COURSE: I studied an MSc in Development and Security which is a taught postgraduate course in the Politics Department. My year's intake for taught postgrads was 150, which I was told by the head of department to have been a decrease since the year before and next year, the dept will be reducing the intake ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful city with good night life.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Many - see above!

I applied to Bristol University in 1999 and started an undergraduate degree in the October of that year. I did not have a very good experience at all. The university is ideal if you originate from a rich background, preferably having been treated to a private education. I however, did not belong to this upper-class mentality and did not find the institution very welcoming for state school students. I know for a fact that the university is very sensitive to this issue as I spoke to the sabbatical officer and the head of my department before finally deciding that I didn't want to waste three ... more

    Advantages Advantages So many opportunities

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Snobbish reputation (undeserved)

I'm a first year law student at the University of Bristol, and i'm having the time of my life! If you are interested in studying here (which i strongly recommend if you are dedicated - to working hard and playing hard!) one word of warning - it rains LOTS and there is a large amount of walking to and from the University buildings - so pick your Halls of Residence CAREFULLY. I'm in Durdham and my boyfriend calls it a penthouse appartment! But it's even reasonably priced (for Bristol) - the en-suite bathroom is a god-send! The reputation of being Oxbridge reject university just is unfair. I ... more

Advantages Advantages Nice campus, good teaching

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very poor admin for entrants, slow and fussy, not up to date with modern technology

It seems to me that Bristol is a nightmare to get an offer of a place on a course. My boyfriend applied there to study physics through UCAS. The universities are supposed to reply to the applicant by something like March, but Bristol were late responding (by more that just a couple of days). Still, my boyfriend went to visit the uni and really liked it so made it his first choice. They sent him information about accommodation for him to fill in. The university seems to be living in the past as they did not offer a service to apply for accommodation online (like most other universities in the ... more

Advantages Advantages Great nightlife, good uni

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some parts of the city to avoid

Bristol is one of the old style unis, and is one of the harder ones to get into UCAS points wise... however, once you're in I found that the equiptment they have for the course I want to do is first class, not to mention the good atmosphere. The only slight critisism is that it doesn't have much of a campus, and I found that there weren't as many events (like regular football games, etc.) organised as there were for some of my friends in unis like coventry..... but then coventry has nothing going on after 6 p.m. - whereas bristol comes alive! Loads of clubs, bars and pubs means that if your ... more

Advantages Advantages Top Rated University by any league table

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Hills

Bristol University is one of the most popular universities apart from Oxford and Cambridge. Grades required to get a place here are quite high but well worth a place on the UCAS form. On the whole Bristol is a friendly city, just big enough to cater for huge shopping complexes (Cribbs Causeway) but not 'congested' as one would normally find in London and Manchester. Bristol also boasts 4 multiscreen cinemas including two Warner Bros Cinemas. During the nights and especially the weekends, Whiteladies Street is awashed with lights and practically thronged with taxis and people going from pubs to ... more

Advantages Advantages Reputation, teaching, city, student life

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost, hills

I have recently finished a four year degree at the University of Bristol and am absolutely convinced that it was the best choice I could have made. I was not an "Oxbridge Reject", but nevertheless know many people who were - by the end of the first year they were also thoroughly satisfied with how things had turned out. It has a great academic reputation, staff who seem to care, beautiful city and a great student nightlife (ever growing!). If you do not mind walking up hills (you could be in halls in the first year which are 40 mins away - uphill!), are likely to get good A-levels and would ... more
