Jaws of Death

Advantages: see op

...have the opportunity. That’s what British Car Auctions is all about. I had a maximum budget of £4000 which I was willing to spend on a decent car. I went to my local Vauxhall (Network Q) and Ford dealers and they essentially told me to go away because their prices started from about £4500 upwards. Vauxhall told me it was because their cars were warranted, mark this point, as we shall return to it later. So there I was, £4000 to spend, and being ...
...He suggested I try the British Car Auction (BCA) as I was likely to get more for my money. I read the same opinion that he has posted in this category and he offered to give me live assistance via mobile phone if I should require it. I took the day off on Monday and trotted down to the local BCA. I got there early and enquired which cars would be up for sale. I could not get a clear answer from a single person as they all referred to rows of cars ...

Car Auctions

Advantages: Vast choice
Disadvantages: Easy to pick up a duffer! Payment options limited

I'm a veteran of the car auctions and I will share some of my knowledge and opinions with you. Statement You can save loadsa money! Truth. Only on forecourt prices which are over the top anyway Advice. If you go to an auction go with someone who knows the score or you'll be sorry. You'll see lots of dealers there who will be looking for the cream to sell off their forecourts. If they swarm around it it's worth bidding on. Remember that they ...
...they can afford to compete with you on the bids. When you see the driver bring the car in don't be afraid to ask them questions like " is the clutch ok"? Also open the bonnet look for leaks listen for taps and if it's been steam cleaned leave it alone! Look at the windscreen sheet to determine the mileage, mot length and service history. Body work can be awful on auction cars because the dealers take them in for peanuts as part exchanges and some ...

Under the hammer...

Advantages: Some bargains to be had
Disadvantages: Some dodgy cars to be had!

It could quite easily have been my worst nightmare, or so i thought.... Having heard about car auctions i was very curious as to what all the fuss is about, and more to the point, if a normal person with reasonable car knowledge could drive away with a bargin. Talking last week to someone who goes, and bombarding him with questions, he finally gave in and took me along with him on the friday. His only advice before we left was, "Dont take ANY money, ...
...out why. First let me explain how it works: To be able to bid you need to put a £500 deposit down, this can be done cash or card and is done first. Its usefull to pick up a lot sheet, this tells you all of the cars that will go though and when. Find the cars that you are interested in, they can be seen in a big parking lot before they go in for auctioning. The cars are then drivin into the auction hall, where profesional but maybe a little OTT, ...

Fair Service

Advantages: Wide choice; quick purchase
Disadvantages: Many duffers; few great bargains

Firstly, Derrrrrrr's review here is useful and hints at the very many pitfalls of auction buying. Having said that a key factor for me is that the traders also buy their cars/vans at auction and sell from fancy forecourts with the same faults. The difference might be that you get a warranty but then again you might skip the expensive warranty on that late low mileage shiny 1 owner... that is missing a cooling fan. I'm always surpirsed how expensive ...
...HP and warranties. They also repair cars at maybe 10% of the cost to a private buyer. Agaion I agree with Derrrr, watch what the traders want to buy but be prepared to make a mjaor repair - why else is the vehcile at sale in auction. Good vehicles are either kept or sold privately. Don't touch anything with obvious faults like its towed in even if "it was driven in". Dealers repair/replace engines/wind mileage clocks back for a few pounds but private ...

buying vehicles from auctions

Advantages: cheaper cars
Disadvantages: no test drives

i worked at a car auction site for over 18 years, can i just say to everyone thinking of buying cars through auctions be very careful as to what your buying. if its your first time always look around notice what happens and always try to find out as much info about them as possible. in my time i have seen some lovely cars going through auctions but i have seen some really bad ones as well. remember when buying at auction you dont get warranties with ...
...so basically your buying someone elses troubles. always keep your eyes open for the cars that have been painted and tarted up. always keep to your price range as it only takes a few minutes to spend thousands of pounds. also all the traders go to auctions to buy cars to sell from forecourts. they know they can push prices up even higher again. if your thinkin g of selling cars or vehicles through auction it may be worth it to try selling it private ...
