Really good but pricey insurance

We've have a British Gas Homecare policy for a long time, initially just to cover our central heating system, we took this out some ten years ago in our first home, when we moved we move the policy with us. British Gas Homecare - DON'T DO IT !

Advantages: NONE . . except numerous useless visits.
Disadvantages: Waste of YOUR time & a waste of YOUR money

I've HAD IT with British Gas. I have had their homecare for boiler and radiator cover for 17 months and have had roughly around 13 visits from their engineers all of whom have said that there is no need for me to buy a new boiler but mine is just temperamental !! Can't deliver when you need them

Advantages: Don't know - they've got the most engineers I suppose
Disadvantages: There still aren't enough engineers to go around

The customer service staff are terrible and using the system that they work with and do not give any information to the engineers or the customer who in my case had waited on 5 occasions and had no shows from engineers that i was told were coming out to my home! What is covered with this HomeCare package?

Advantages: Cheap monthly cover, arrived on time
Disadvantages: Not recognising problem, excessive cost of repairs, poor complaints procedures

I signed up as I was having difficulty with my boiler and thought it would be an effective way of getting it sorted. Here's a catalogue of the visits I eventually had: 1st call out: Paid £50 call out fee upfront (which I wasn't informed about when signed up and made that clear!) and if the repair could be done it would not be charged to my account. Engineer came round and diagnosed the problem but couldn't fix it so had to put parts on order. 2nd ...

Advantages: They're aren't any unless you enjoy complaining to British Gas

Advantages: You can get through to the call centre for breakdown quite quickly

Dreadful service. Repeated promises unfulfilled. Fixed appointment reneged upon. An extremely unhelpful manager. An arrogant attitude. Refusal to correct admitted errors. Inability to make firm forward commitments. We are voting with our feet. We are going to look into alternative boiler insurance and cancel the account as soon as we can. This is a relatively recent deterioration - we have been customers since the late 1980s or thereabouts and we really regret the £1,000 or so of accumulated premiums over the last five years based on our recent (December 2008) treatment. I had a new Baxi boiler fitted four years ago. I have a HomeCare 200 cover with British Gas who have serviced the boiler annually and issued a landlord's certificate as I am letting my property at present. An engineer went out to inspect the boiler recently to deal with a problem, found out that it was rusty inside due to a leak, said it was too dangerous and switched off the gas supply. The reason for the leak was not clearly explained to me and it seems strange that this problem was overlooked. The boiler suddenly became rusty to such an extent that I now need to buy a new one! The cover has clearly not given me peace of mind! ...

We have homecare 400 as of about a week ago... and by plain coincidence today our boiler started making screaching noises and the heating stopped working. British Gas were called at 11am and were with us by 2.00pm despite the fact that the roads are thick with snow. The guy they sent was great, solved the problem and was very helpful. We now have heat! Yay. For anyone like us who has just taken out a policy, don't be put off by negative comments as human nature means that you rarely hear the positives. ...

I've asked Scottish Gas to send round a service man five times this year and each time they have not turned up. I don't have much annual leave, so taking days off to wait around is extremely upsetting to me. Scottish Gas' policy is to grant £10 compensation for a missed appointment. This is a joke and an insult, especially when it happens every time. They refused to send someone outside my working hours, 9 till 5, even though they've stood me up twice in a row this time. ...
