I am sure we all know how much it can cost if we have to call a plumber out or if we have a problem with the central heating it can run into £1000's of pounds and can have serious health implications if left unchecked because you don't have the money. Well British Gas have solved this problem for me and I must say their Homecare cover is very good value for money and has more than paid for itself over the past two years. I have had problems with all three of the main things that run in the house, Central Heating, Plumbing and Electrics and for a monthly payment of £25.99 a month I don't have ... more

Advantages Advantages We saved over a grand

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Dishonest engineers

When me and my boyfriend moved into our first home together earlier in the year we decided to take out the British Gas homecare - thank God! We decided on the homecare 400 bundle which covers the heating, boiler, plumbing and home electrics and this is £17.00 per month - we pay by direct debit. Last month the heating started acting quite weird. It would go really hot and wouldn't turn off and then it wouldn't turn on at all. We beared with it for a few weeks but when the hot water packed up we decided to book an engineer. The first engineer who came out replaced some sort of pump and got the ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick service - never had a problem

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey!

We've have a British Gas Homecare policy for a long time, initially just to cover our central heating system, we took this out some ten years ago in our first home, when we moved we move the policy with us. It covers any problems or repairs with your central heating system or boiler, there are different levels of cover - we always took out the 3 star service, you get an annual boiler check/service and then if you have a problem you call them and they will send out an engineer to fix it. In the past we have always had newish houses, so even though we had the policy we had no real need to call ... more

Advantages Advantages Don't know - they've got the most engineers I suppose

Disadvantages Disadvantages There still aren't enough engineers to go around

Wish I'd read some of these reviews years ago. We've had a British Gas HomeCare 200 agreement for 11 years, we took it over from the previous owners. I know they've missed at least one service but I don't pay that much attention really as long as the boiler is working. Anyway in the past year it's stopped working twice, and both times we've had to wait 3 days for an engineer to come round to fix it. (Currently still waiting, and freezing) When I rang up this time, on a Sunday afternoon, the woman on the phone said it would be Wednesday, and then said that we're "eligible to upgrade" to another ... more

Advantages Advantages NONE . . except numerous useless visits.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Waste of YOUR time & a waste of YOUR money

I've HAD IT with British Gas. I have had their homecare for boiler and radiator cover for 17 months and have had roughly around 13 visits from their engineers all of whom have said that there is no need for me to buy a new boiler but mine is just temperamental !! Having just had the last of 2 visits (all visits have required me to take time off work which they do not seem to care about) last week (Thursday & Friday) the boiler worked for a day and a half and then broke down again (Sunday night). I have explicitly explained to British Gas that my employers will not give me any further time off ... more

I am on homecare 400 which costs me £42 a month, Last year i had problems with my washing machine and i had an engineer come out and fix the problem by cleaning the filter! Then i had a problem with my boiler! I had 3 appointments not turn up, I complained that i had taken three days off work but only got apologies from useless uncaring customer service staff who really have no clue about their jobs or the system that they operate! I can only apologise can i book you another appointment? Er yes please because my boiler does not work!!!!!! Eventually an engineer came 3 weeks after initial phone ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Don't repair your Heating system

I would never recommend BRITISG GAS HOME CARE to anyone it’s a waste of money and for my they failed to deliver. I was a customer of British Gas Home care for approximately 2 years and in that time I had some very minor repairs completed. On one occasion during the replacement of a bleed valve I was advised I needed a power flush at the cost of £700. The BG person told me that I had sludge in my system and was shown some dirty water. I had removed a radiator weeks before with no sign of sludge and no symptoms such as the lower part of the radiator being cold and the upper half hot so I refused ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap monthly cover, arrived on time

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not recognising problem, excessive cost of repairs, poor complaints procedures

I signed up as I was having difficulty with my boiler and thought it would be an effective way of getting it sorted. Here's a catalogue of the visits I eventually had: 1st call out: Paid £50 call out fee upfront (which I wasn't informed about when signed up and made that clear!) and if the repair could be done it would not be charged to my account. Engineer came round and diagnosed the problem but couldn't fix it so had to put parts on order. 2nd call out: Repair done, and had to pay full cost of repair as it wasn't done on the 1st visit. 3rd/4th call out: Recurring problem so had to call them ... more

Advantages Advantages The concept I was sold and subsequently bought made sense.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unable to trust British Gas. Now appears to be the most expensive option. 2,500 plus 700, plus!

Advice Please - I can be reached at packart(at)me.com I have had British Gas landlord cover for the boiler in my rental property since 2005. The boiler was replaced in 2000, so still relatively new when I began paying the monthly service fee to British Gas. I estimate my payments in total for peace of mind are in excess of 2,500 GBP. The boiler has required very little maintenance until recently. This is a high price to pay, but due to renting the property I considered this an important service to ensure successful lettings. Sadly British Gas has failed me on a several levels with the most ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages As above

Paid over £33 per month for Homecare 400 ( i.e. the full service for central Heating, plumbing etc. ) Boiler packed up. 6 visits and a total over over 16 hours waiting in for Engineers over 6 day period and still the problem not fixed. I had to take so much time off work I nearly lost my job. In my opinion the Engineers were incompetent and not trained sufficiently to understand what to do to solve the problem. They contradicted and blamed each other, and on every occasion left ensuring us that the problem had been fixed, when it hadn't been. Had to employ local Firm at great expense to ... more
