...in the magazine was the Brother HL-1230. It wasn't the one with the most bells and whistles and it wasn't the fastest printer or the most dpi (dot per square inch), but overall when you compared them it was very, very efficient and excellent value.
We decided to do price searches on the internet. The prices were coming in at around £170 to £150 pounds. We have a Staples store quite nearby on one of those giant retail parks. We went online to try ... ...fallen to pieces.
The Brother HL-1230 Laser Printer is just about 14" square and 9" high and sits quite neatly on the corner of our desk. In fact considering the space that you had to leave for the paper to feed out of on our old Lexmark Inkjet printer, then space wise they occupy about the same area of desk. Admittedly it's looks a lot bulkier that the Lexmark.
It's a nice light grey/cream colour, the usual shade for office hardware and peripherals. ...

Advantages: TOTALLY RELIABLE, VERY ECONOMICAL, UNOBTRUSIVE Disadvantages: NONE
...can only say that the Brother HL-1230 leaves them all standing at the starting gate. It is only on its second toner cartridge and we do a fair amount of printing. There is also the fact that with a laser printer there are no ink cartridges to dry out.
The initial monetary outlay may be a little more but is more than compensated for by not having to buy ink cartridges, which do not last anywhere near as long as the toner ones.
The speed, clarity ... ...a piece of paper may jam but it is simplicity itself to fix. It is also unobtrusive in that it's square and does not take up a lot of space
I suppose the poor old thing is getting old now, but my maxim is 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Anyway our mad cat loves it because as you switch it on the side vent where the cooling fan is makes a humming noise which he loves. He is still mystified as to where a printed page comes from and spends a lot ...

Overall Satisfaction
I purchased my Brother HL-1230 brand new and have never regretted it. While I have used other laser printers in the office, this one is great for both home and office use. Would give high recommendations for anyone running an office from their home or small business.
Speed and Print Quality
This is not really a machine designed for high volume office use as the speed is not overly fast. At high quality (600x600dpi), the machine ... ...a small degree of flexibility in the details of photo printing and the quality desired ranging from draft to picture options. It comes with 2MB of onboard ram with those wanting a little more out of the machine able to get it in the next upgrade found on the HL-1240 which puts out 14ppm and has 4MB of ram.
