Advantages: Washing machine life preservation Disadvantages: An extra cost to each wash
...so we are advised.
Putting a Calgon tablet into the washing machine with each wash is an act of faith. There is no way a consumer can ever know for sure if it was necessary or effective.
You need at least 2 washing machines to carry out a controlled experiment.
If you steadfastly follow the advice you may still have a need to call in the repair man – and if you ignore it you may still find that you don’t. Such is the lottery of life.

Well, I use Calgon liquid. A small dose of Calgon in the soap compartment of your washing machine for EACH wash, and the problem is avoided. It is however available in powder and tablets, whatever your choice, the results stay the same.

...been thickly coated and the Calgon was removing the scale very effectively.
As well as being very effective it is also less expensive than it first appears. By removing the limescale from the water it effectively gives you soft water. The instructions state "Dose the quantity of laundry detergent recommended for soft water". For me this saves about 10p per wash and the tablets work out at about 20p each, so the overall cost is about half the purchase ...

Advantages: Softens the water so you don't need to use as much detergent Disadvantages: using more detergent does the same job and is still cheaper per wash
I used calgon tablets for a year and a half and yes they do soften the water so you don't have to use as much detergent per wash. But they cost 20 pence per tablet. I thought they were worth it at first, but recently read that just by using more detergent you can prevent limescale as most detergents have built in water softeners that help prevent limescale. Using more detergent costs 5-10 p extra per wash, but still costs 10-15 pence less per wash ...
