Keep using the tablets
Review of Calgon (Anti-limescale products) by Discerna

Advantages: Washing machine life preservation
Disadvantages: An extra cost to each wash

...so we are advised. Putting a Calgon tablet into the washing machine with each wash is an act of faith. There is no way a consumer can ever know for sure if it was necessary or effective. You need at least 2 washing machines to carry out a controlled experiment. If you steadfastly follow the advice you may still have a need to call in the repair man – and if you ignore it you may still find that you don’t. Such is the lottery of life. But ... Read review

Review of Calgon (Anti-limescale products) by FrenchCancan

Advantages: Avoid costly repairs, smells good, easy to use
Disadvantages: If you do not like Blue, the colour

...your washing machine. Well, I use Calgon liquid. A small dose of Calgon in the soap compartment of your washing machine for EACH wash, and the problem is avoided. It is however available in powder and tablets, whatever your choice, the results stay the same. Whatisit ? Calgon is an anti-limescale product that will keep your washing machine running despite living in a hard water area. Not being a specialist, I can only go with what I see ... Read review

Cheaper than a repair? [Edited]
Review of Calgon (Anti-limescale products) by tsr2

Advantages: Very effective in removing limescale, requires less washing powder
Disadvantages: Unnecessary in soft water areas, don't use with prewash

...been thickly coated and the Calgon was removing the scale very effectively. As well as being very effective it is also less expensive than it first appears. By removing the limescale from the water it effectively gives you soft water. The instructions state "Dose the quantity of laundry detergent recommended for soft water". For me this saves about 10p per wash and the tablets work out at about 20p each, so the overall cost is about half the purchase ... Read review

definately worth trying
Review of Calgon (Anti-limescale products) by hpearce

Advantages: reduces limescale build up
Disadvantages: cost

...hard water area so gave Calgon (both the tablets and the boxed poweder) a try. You simply add them with your washing powder in the machine and set as usual. Simple. They help in several ways, they reduce the build up of limescale around the heating element, they reduce the amount of electricity used per wash (due to better efficiency) and they also remove the limescale from any other place in the washing machine - the drum has never looked cleaner! For ... Read review

Advantages: keeps washing machine workings shiny and new!
Disadvantages: cost

...the other reviews left about calgon and realised that previous reviewers may be using more than required! I work for a chain of stores which sell electrical goods such as washing machines (but will keep the company name disclosed) and receive frequent training in product areas. One of the most recent areas i have studied is the essentials section to make sure that my customers get the best out of their purchases at the lowest cost possible and ... Read review

prevents limescale but so does more detergent.
Review of Calgon (Anti-limescale products) by Nicko25

Advantages: Softens the water so you don't need to use as much detergent
Disadvantages: using more detergent does the same job and is still cheaper per wash

I used calgon tablets for a year and a half and yes they do soften the water so you don't have to use as much detergent per wash. But they cost 20 pence per tablet. I thought they were worth it at first, but recently read that just by using more detergent you can prevent limescale as most detergents have built in water softeners that help prevent limescale. Using more detergent costs 5-10 p extra per wash, but still costs 10-15 pence less per wash ... Read review
