I asked myself the same question while sitting on a plane, just about to depart from Prague, back to London Heathrow. Journey time close to 2 hours, conditions permitting: scattered showers were forecast in London on arrival. Soft movie music was playing a dramatic scene that seemed to whisk me away into a melancholic haze. I had double vision due to the salty tears - my tear ducts unable to cope with the emotional turmoil from my heavy heart. We’d been together for just over a year, six months of it, she was in the UK. I tried to plan with her, my next trip back to Prague, or the next event ... more

Do I win the prize for long distance?I met my first husband in Malaysia in 1972 while I was on holiday there staying with my parents who lived there. He was Australian and in the Airforce. We corresponded when I came back to university and this went on for a couple of years, remember we had no internet and phone calls would have been prohibitive, he came over to England late in 1973 for a few weeks and then in 1975 I saved enough by working all summer of 1974 in a bakery to go out to Australia. I had a wonderful time and we flew to Papua New Guinea to meet his parents who lived there at the ... more

The answer to that question is that it can do. I am assuming most people reading that question will think of boy, girl love relationships but I think that it can also relate to friendship relationships between two people. I have many long distance friendships of 40 years involving the occasional visit and phone call. When I was 18(nearly 40 years ago) I had a long distance love relationship which survived for a year. I shall tell you about that and the way we kept it alive. We met through my advert in a music paper (but that’s another story) When we met I was at college in his home town. When ... more

Advantages Advantages Love literally knows no boundaries

Disadvantages Disadvantages Reliant on technology - lack of physical contact

I wrote in to suggest this particular topic as it is one very close and dear to my heart. I have recently returned from a holiday to the USA to meet a girl I had been talking to online. It isn't quite as risky as it sounds because we had shared friends in each country, so we weren't total strangers, but we hadn't met each other in person until a few weeks ago.The first nine months of our relationship was strictly online, and for me, this hasn't been a negative. With current technology at a level where we could send bite-size emails as regularly as other couple send SMS text messages and ... more

In the past, I have had a long distance relationship that I would just like to use as my own example for writing this review. It was with an individual who was about two orthree years older than me, and although the distance wasn't too great for us to be apart it still was far enough for us to have to really work at it. OK, so I live in Plymouth and the other person lived about fifteen miles the other side of Exeter from where I live - so all in all, the distance was about sixty miles give or take a footstep or two. However with me at the time doing shift work as a nurse at my local hospital ... more

Advantages Advantages For a less serious relationship, long-distance could actually be better.

Disadvantages Disadvantages But for a serious relationship...? Well...

What follows is basically a musing on the question - does it answer it? Actually, no, probably not. I set out to say that relationships can't really be sustained at long-distance, but ended up raising more questions than I answered I think. All I will say is: kudos to those who manage it. It takes a type of effort that people in 'short-distance' relationships simply don't encounter.*People will call me a cynic. They'll lament my blackened soul. They'll say 'Pah! Heartless fool! What does he know of love? He is but 24. Whelp. Pup!' Well. They might say that if they were born in Shakespearean ... more

Can long distance relationships work? I can answer a resounding 'yes' to that. When people ask this question it usually means long distance relationship within the same country. My long distance relationship was with a girl in Holland after moving to Holland five years ago, we are still together. The relationship started out because of a common interest in a band that we both followed called ‘Infadels’. Lara was just a girl I knew from the bands forum and we used to chat about the band and other music and stuff in general. Then Lara had the opportunity to visit London for an Infadels gig. We ... more

Advantages Advantages When you do see eachother it is very exciting.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You can't talk to them much really, you can't hug or hold them and more.

Can Long Distance Relationships Work?I will start of by saying, I haven't ever been in a long distance relationship. I have, however, seen it crush my of my close friends. It was going so well, they were engaged and had a date for the wedding and everything and she let him down. One of the reasons? She lived in America and as he has a daughter she would have to move over here. That's a big ask! This is my opinions and views so, here I go:The ProsWhen you do get to see each other if you live very far away there are some very special moments which, if the relationship does work, you will ... more

I’ve never written a Current Issue review before but this one struck a chord. I met my boyfriend roughly 4 and a half years ago when he started work with me. He was coming up to 17 and I was……..23! He was one of the nicest people I’d ever met, though I never thought of him in ‘that’ way just because he was so young, the thought never crossed my mind. Just like the thought never crossed my mind when he moved 200 miles away a year later, that he would get back in touch another year later and this would eventually lead to a relationship. We’d always got on well but while we were good friends at ... more

Advantages Advantages Sometimes absence makes the heart founder

Disadvantages Disadvantages Distance is a barrier, people need companionship.

Distance relationships can work provided that there is some sort of communication and ocassionally meeting each other, but one must keep in mind where is this relationship going. Living apart will be difficult through time, compromise will eventually be the only option available. I was transfered to another country and separated from my family, because of our childern's school my wife and i decided its best to stay apart and i would travel every 3 months to visit my family. This did not work we eventually missed each other and within two and a half months moved my wife and kids to live with me ... more
