Advantages: Superb build quality, image quality and incredible image stabiliser Disadvantages: Big and heavy and very conspicuous. It's blinging. Eats batteries too.
...use the 70-200 with a Canon 1.4x MkII teleconverter to boost the lens range to 280mm.
Build Quality
-------------------
The IS version of this lens is pretty much identical in most respects to the non-IS version, except for the additional £200 it burns. It is the same size and almost the same weight as the non-IS version and optically almost the same. What it does have is Canon's most advanced image stabilisation system yet (as of 2007).
In common ... ...want to eliminate camera shake).
For the 5D, you get the advertised 70-200 but using the Canon 1.4x MkII teleconverter doesn't hurt the image quality noticably so you can have a useful 280mm f5.6 lens. I can't say the same for your wallet though, the teleconverter is another £200. ...

Advantages: Light weight, Sharp, Fast, Reasonably Priced Disadvantages: Not Image Stabilised, Tripod Collar not included
I have been using my 70mm-200mm F4.0 L for roughly 2 years on a 20D body.
It is very quick to focus and is very sharp throughout the focal range. The bokeh is very soft at F/4 giving a soft, out of focus background.
The lens is extremely light, making it easy to transport.
I find it an extremely useful lens, due to the extensive range from 70mm-200mm and use it with a 1.4x converter to create a total length of 280mm. I personally use my lens to ... ...to beautifully. The build quality of this lens is excellent - which means no wobbling and smooth controls.

Advantages: Image Quality, Comparative size and weight, value for money, Focus Speed Disadvantages: None!
The Canon 70-200mm f/4L is a fantastic lens for the money. The glass is of the same superb optical quality as it's bigger brother, the f/2.8 version, while keeping size and weight down. The Ultrasonic Motor (USM) means focusing is silent and blisteringly fast, able to easily keep up with the quickest bird or motor race. Some photographers that are used to using Canon's top of the range 'L' glass may be disappointed to find that the lens is not entirely ...

Advantages: Fast-focusing, robust construction, light-weight and, oh yes, the optical quality!! Disadvantages: Non IS. When ring-mounted on a tripod, it feels a tad unbalanced.
Contrary to the usual opinion, this one is from someone who once HAD one of these babies and ended up selling it out thinking he could get away with any other cheap tele instead: now I regret dearly the sale and I DO intend to buy another copy as soon as possible!
Leaving the technical details to other reviews, I think this lens is nothing less than a pleasure to own and after it, my standards have radically changed. To the point where I simply ...
