Advantages Advantages Great for special events.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey!

As most top quality items do, we get a nicely packaged item, with all the appropriate information, such as the instruction manual, which is overall very easy to follow and it even includes diagrams for those of you out there who are not over technically minded. The XM2 is Canon's replacement for the DM-XM1 three-CCD MiniDV camcorder. If you have seen a Sony VX2000, you will notice that these two camcorders look quite alike. Although the image of it looks quite sturdy it actually isn't (measuring 11.8 cm x 30.6 cm x 13.6 cm) , also weighing in at 1.12 kg, it makes it all that comfortable to ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent lens quality, clear image, good colour reproduction, manual overrides, colour viewfinder

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not brilliant in low light, mic could be better, not HD

The Canon XM2 is the middle child of the camcorder world. Often sighted as too expensive by true amateur ‘point-and-shoot’ users, yet overlooked by the budding Spielberg who leap straight to it’s older brother the Canon XL2. So is this camera a stop gap in the pricing war, or are there other reasons to consider? If you're looking to get high quality picture definition from your camcorder then nothing short of 3CCD will do, and the XM2 delivers. When a camera records an image, it does so by using a light sensor behind the lens that takes the place of the film in traditional cameras. By focusing ... more

Advantages Advantages Lightweight, excellent picture quality, ease of use, hot-shoe for attachments

Disadvantages Disadvantages Manual isn't so helpful. Not so good with low-light conditions.

Myself and a few friends came up with a few ideas for short films and at the time we used my old Sony HC14E camera (before it was stolen in a burglary!). We called the HC14E our crash-cam as it certainly was put through the war-zones (paintball matches, in-car shots, drops and even ran over!). I decided I wanted something a bit more professional and decided to go for the Canon XM2. My first thought on this camera is it's size and weight. It's small enough to pack into a rucksack, and it is light enough to be used and carried for a whole day without straining the users arms or hands. I just ... more

Advantages Advantages Every Function you Could wish for!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard to find said functions!

Hi, First thing I'll say is that this camera isn't mine! It's one I use a lot at work, so if anything it probably gets more use, and on a wider varity of projects. This camera is really designed for the business and high end user. The unit itself is a reasonable size. Ist's not too large to make it difficult to use, but it is lasrge enough to make it easy to keep a smooth picture. Weight wise It's fine until you start adding extras. I often use a wide angle lens, and glare shield which can add a lot of weight to the front end of the camera. If you the add something to the active shoe, you can ... more

    Advantages Advantages Value for money

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not good enough for commercial use

Overview: I think this camera is a great all round choice for people who want a top range video camera without paying ridiculas prices. its about the cheapest you can go before you start to reduce in quality, its right on the border, Right cam for you? For instance; if you just want something to mess about with (mates and stuff): not for you, get a cheaper hand cam for about £150 Trying to start up video making company: probably not the best choice, go for something better quality Student: bang on, make high quality videos that will look great on portfolios while keeping some money in the bank ... more

Advantages Advantages Picture quality, interface/functionability, weight, size

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sound quality, can't charge and mains power simultaneously

The picture quality is definitely commendable on this camera, except when using the photograph function - this is however a problem with many videocameras. Canon have concentrated on the lens and semi-professional, to professional functions on this camera and have not cluttered it with effects. It has many handy functions such as Zebra (which you can adjust the sensitivity on) which allows you to set your exposure to the right levels, preventing brilliant white. It also has all of your standard functions such as white balance (Manual and Auto), Exposure (Manual and Auto), 4:3/16:9 Aspect ... more

Advantages Advantages Great price. Great quality.

Disadvantages Disadvantages mic not to great when picking up speech

Ever since the digital revolution began i have been waiting for a camcorder like this one. The previous model by canon(DM-XL1s) was good but this on is absolutely stupendous and even though i believe that digital camcorders can get better than this, at this point of time , there are very few prosumer camcorders that can beat this particular model in this price range. The DM-XM2 is a professional 3ccd camcorder meant for the budding filmaker or semiprofessional and not for the average home user unless u are a home user who can afford this baby. This cam has excellent colur fidelity and the ... more

Advantages Advantages Small and therfore light camera with good lens and sharp image

Disadvantages Disadvantages Manual picture controls not on the outside if camera

To start with the Xm2 is a great bit of technology packed tightly into a neat package. It is easy to carry and is reasonable to operate handheld. The picture quality I find varies allot depending on what quality DV tape you use. Using Premium quality tapes gives allot better colour but either obtain a sharp crisp image. The lens could do with being detatchable even at that size as other lenses need to be placed over the top which leads to serious combination problems. The microphone however is supurb its directional left and right manual contols comes in handy all the time and was a great ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Picture Quality and range of picture adjustments for price.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Decent sound quality is hard to produce

considerably cheaper than other pro-sumer camcorders on the market the XM2 provides exellent picture quality and manual adjustment for its price. The Layout of the camera is logical and suits the needs of a consumer wanting to make quick and detail adjustmenst easily. The lense is fantastic and is a key aspect to the great picture quality. The downfalls of this camera are in its sound recording abilities: mic pick up range is limited and voices are hard to record (due to trebley sound). I've not found the "frame mode" very easy to use and have struggled to get great results from it. In ... more
