I bought this little fella for £1,500 with a view to shooting short films and editing them at home. So far I have been extremely impressed!
The picture quality is generally superb - the three CCDs reproduce everything very faithfully. It's not so hot in low light though - doesn't seem to pick up as much detail. However, you can adjust camera speed and aperture manually.
The flip-out LCD screen is a real bonus for hand-held "running about" stuff. ... ...shines. It eliminates a hell of a lot of wobble. The zoom goes up to a ludicrous 100x (20x optical) and the rocker is very smooth. I've had to get used to the servo-driven focus though. I'll be honest - I don't like it. When using it manually there's quite a bit of lag, making hard to "snap" into focus or indeed do anything quickly where focusing is involved.
The photo button is surprisingly useful - it records 6 seconds of still image with sound. ...

Advantages: fluorite lens system, picture quality Disadvantages: colour on viewfinder not quite right
This is the one you want. I bought this with a mind to make shoert films. I've made a few but now am taking this little beauty abroad to shoot a documentary on apes. This versatile machine has the most amazing picture quality and boasts a fluorite lens system which is the first camcorder to have this. Its compact, comfortable in the hand and has built in stedyshot to reduce handshake on screen. It has a 20X opitcal zoom which is fine for all uses. ...
