Advantages Advantages Top-notch build quality and design. First rate results

Disadvantages Disadvantages No case! Quite pricey for specification level. Shortish battery life with no clear indicator

I’ve always liked the Canon range of IXUS* pocket cameras, ever since I bought the first, and to my way of thinking, best built model, finished as it was in a hefty satin stainless steel case with just a touch of black plastic around the lens. I guess you’d call this the IXUS 1, except back then it wasn’t numbered, it was THE IXUS. *In other parts of the globe, this may be called an ELPH, as in, ‘……still, as long as you’ve got your ELPH’ (another missed marketing opportunity!) Over a 6-year period it has served us well, except for a failure during its guarantee period, which was fixed free-of ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent picture quality, compact size, easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor battery indicator, shutter speed can be a bit slow

I bought this camera a day before my holiday and have just come back after a week armed with nearly 1000 photos. It took only the afternoon after it arrived to go through the menus and get the hang of using it and after only a few photos I knew I had made an excellent choice. Picture quality was definitely the most important factor for me and I have not been disappointed - quite the opposite in fact. I had my mums Kodak DC4800 camera as a benchmark and didn't think I would get a camera with anything like the same picture quality within my budget let alone better, which this is, by some way at ... more

    5 Stars CANON IXUS 400 07/02/2004
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Slim and Small (Portable)

Disadvantages Disadvantages From my experience... battery power runs out to fast and no internal memory.

*Brand: The Canon Ixus 400 was obviously made by Canon, one of the top leading companies known for their quality and their always upgrading technology. *Dimensions: The Canon Ixus 400 like stated in my advantages is very portable, the dimensions are as follows 2.0(H)x5.0(W)x8.0(D) --- cm For someone like me who loves taking photographs and taking the camera everywhere would really enjoy this light, small camera. *Megapixels The Canon IXUS 400 has a remarkable megapixel of 4mb! This means the digital camera has much better quality and sharper images then other top camera's. This also means you ... more

Advantages Advantages Compact, easy to use, good software

Disadvantages Disadvantages Case is extra, only comes with a 32mb smartmedia card

I moved to this camera from a Canon Ixus Z70 (non digital) and thought that I would have to go some to beat that camera. This camera more than exceeded my expectations - it uses all of its 4.1 megapixels to good effect. If you want a reliable, easy-to-use good looking camera with plenty of useful features then this is the camera for you. It takes photos up to size A4 fine quality and will take up to A3 (though I would think that the average amateur photographer would not have the capability to print high quality photos this size. I particularly like the fact that the menus are simple to use ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages NO CASE

I am not a camera specialist. I can be confused easily with the terminology of the digital world. This camera was bought for me 3 years ago, after the arrival of my son, I was keeping true print in business single handidly!! I actually enjoy my camera and photography now I have a digital camera and would never go back to film - well who would! The canon IXUS 400 is great it serves all my needs, there are newer models on the market but that will always be the case. Speaking of cases where is it - what a shame it didn't come with one. The camera itself was not cheap you think they could have ... more

Advantages Advantages High resolution - 4 megapixels

Disadvantages Disadvantages No carrying case supplied

Yep! Guilty! Of choosing a camera just because of its brand name. Canon has long been recognised for its quality cameras, and this is no different. The canon ixus 400 can be carried anywhere – measuring only 2.0 * 5.0 * 8.0cm – it is extremely light and portable and is great to just keep in your pocket to catch that rare shot. Camera picture quality is generally defined by the number of megapixels that the camera is able to catch the shot in. Top of the range cameras can produce over 10 megapixels, but above 3 will produce a good quality photograph. The canon ixus 400, being 4 megapixels ... more

Advantages Advantages Small. Easy to use. Takes great photos.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Battery life not so great. Accessories not that hot.

I did a LOT of research before I bought a digital camera. I narrowed it down to the Cybershot, and the Canon IXUS, and I chose the IXUS because it looker nicer. I'm glad I made the choice. The first thing you notice about the camera is that it would be something you can show off to your friends. The second thing you notice is the size. It's so SMALL. It easily fits into your pocket and is perfect for holidays. I went to Hong Kong with it recently - and I took so many photos with it, merely due to the fact that it was easy to take anywhere - whether it be climbing up Victoria Peak (a mountain ... more

Advantages Advantages Compact, stylish, great features, great pictures.

Disadvantages Disadvantages No case, little battery warning.

I've read various reviews of this camera, both before and after buying it, and other than the disadvantages I've listed above, I've found other people's complaints to be unfounded. I've got a Nikon SLR, which is a little awkward to take everywhere so started looking around for a small digital camera which could take the photos that I'd appreciate (I'm quite picky) consistently. I've been using this camera for about 4 months now and is has never let me down. At about the size of a packet of cigarettes, it fits easily into pockets without being a burden. It also has a quick start-up time for ... more

    Advantages Advantages Compact Design, Lightweight

Disadvantages Disadvantages Shutter speed, battery life

I've had this Canon Ixus 400 for 3 years and now have a 128 MB card in it meaning I can get a fair few pictures before the memory runs out. Before buying this camera I looked at quite a few compact digitals of similar spec in this price range and ended up opting for this because of its superior design and build quality. The design is one of the best features of the camera. It can withstand even the most hardy of knocks and bumps. Only this week I dropped the camera from standing height onto stone floor and it coped fine. Also, being lightweight and compact always helps. The bad points however: ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very good pictures

Disadvantages Disadvantages More manual settings would be appreciated

This camera is an excellent value for money buy. It has a wonderful image quality. It is easy to use and the software package is good and can be upgraded from the Canon Europe. I've had the camera for 9 months now and I am so pleased with it! 4 Megapixels, very handy. I suggest you always carry along in the inner pocket a spare battery. If you need to keep it connected to the pc for a long time, the is a power cable to plug it it directly in the mains rather than use the battery. Batteries take a couple of hours to be fully charged. I always use it on manual rather then automatic. I feel there ... more
