...serious amateur and professional photographers, Canon has also released the £1275 EOS 10D, which succeeds the EOS D60. A 6.4 million pixel digital SLR with a seven point wide area autofocus system, it is the first digital SLR camera to feature Direct Print capability. It can save images simultaneously in both RAW and JPEG formats, with a choice of six JPEG file sizes. It covers ISO 100-1600, adheres to the Adobe RGB Colour Space standard and can ... ...a miserly old man.
Canon have built a strong reputation in the digital camera market, especially at the top end and the EOS 10D maintains that excellent rep, which is very well deserved. Price is a bit of a stinker, but big boys do love their expensive big toys. It’s just that it’s sometimes hard to convince the wife to let you splash… ...

Advantages: Ease of use, great pictures, good feel Disadvantages: Some non Canon lenses may cause errors, no eye-control focus
...weeks ago I owned a Canon EOS3 which I loved (and still do). I finally decided to take the plunge and go digital after using a digital compact for a few weeks. Canon was the obvious choice for me, since I already owned Canon fit lenses. I had been watching and waiting for the last couple of years, until digital seemed that it could rival film. This camera is the one that firmly puts the nail in the coffin for film!
If you are a Canon (or SLR) user, ... ...camera and go.
But....and this is a big but...make sure you read the manual in full, and learn as much as possible about digital imaging as possible.
Even though you can pick up the camera and take pictures immediately, this thing is not a toy! It is a complex piece of equipment, and to get the best out of it, you must learn all there is to know. For example, learn the differences between shooting in RAW, or JPEG. Learn about white balance, sharpening, ...

...thinking that this was another Canon EOS 35mm camera. AF is fast and the AI focus mode that tracks a subject is very accurate indeed. Being able to grab 9 shots in three seconds is also handy for those who like to shoot sports and nature where timing is of the essence.
My own area is in landscape photography, an acid test where digital cameras are concerned, and many have failed in my eyes. It all boils down to fine detail resolution, latitude, ... ...up large, the images from Canon EOS digitals always look more 'filmy' than their competitors. Perhaps it is the very restrained in-camera processing - no unsightly sharpening artefacts, no agressive noise reduction algorithms reducing the fine detail and textures captured. The end result is outstanding. Stand an A3 print from this next to an A3 print from a 35mm slide and you'd be hard pressed to spot the difference - except that the 10D would have ...

Advantages: Strong body - has taken a fair few knocks but never failed me. Disadvantages: Slow writes to CF card, visible pixel noise at 400 ASA.
Very robust and reliable camera. I've been using one from new and it has given great results. The autofocus has more difficulty finding focus than my old (film) EOS 5 models, but I've got used to that. The only lens it wouldn't accept from the ones I used with the EOS 5's was a Sigma wide-angle, but this is a known problem and Sigma will modify their lenses free of charge. Although its 6 MP is modest by today's standards, this camera has let me take ... ...arrival of an EOS 5D has now consigned the 10D to the role of backup body, but it still has its uses: unlike the new 5D it has a built-in pop-up flashgun enabling fill-in flash (I do not regard pop-up flashguns on an SLR to have any use as a primary flash), and the 1.6:1 effective magnification resulting from the smaller sensor is useful when coupled to a telephoto to give me a higher degree of magnification. ...

Advantages: Image quality, handling, value for money Disadvantages: Start up time
The Canon 10D is the third DSLR of the xxD line by Canon, which now contains 7 cameras. In my opinion the 10D is one of the best, for a number of reasons. The 6mp sensor allows prints to be made at A3 size or more, while reducing noise in the images. It also features a Magnesium Alloy body which feels very solid, and adds to the impression that this camera is more expensive than it actually is - it can be found very cheaply now from eBay or professional ... ...wide-angle lenses may find that they are not so wide when coupled with the 10D. To sum up, the Canon 10D is one of Canon's best DSLRs to date, with superb quality images and handling, only let down by small details such as a long startup time. A solid 9/10. ...

Advantages: Good build quality, excellent "feel", takes some non-digital EOS lenses Disadvantages: Very expensive, poor quality screen, some control switches are way too small
I have owned my 10D for 10 months and during that time I have used it in most conditions and for most types of photography. It is without doubt a robust and generally well built camera. However if like me, your decision to purchase is based on the fact that you can use all your old EOS lenses, you should note that not ALL EOS lenses do in fact work with this model (I think it would be best to take your existing lenses to the dealer and check yourself!) ... ...Once you have established which of your lenses DO work, you then have to take into account that because the 10D has a small sensor array the effective length of your lenses is multiplied by 1.6 (thus your favorite 28mm wide angle is now a not so useful 44.8mm! and your nice 300mm telephoto has magically become 480mm and can no longer be used hand held!...of course none of this applies to the purpose built cannon digital EOS lenses which are fabulous! ...

Advantages: Versatility, sharp 6.3 MP pictures, huge battery time, uses standard Canon lenses. Disadvantages: Just a little short of professional standards with speed of multi-shots and with landscape shooting. Small LCD screen.
A very sturdy, rugged, enthusiast/professional SLR camera which uses Canon's standard EF range of lenses. A host of features make this a fun camera to use. I have had mine for several months now and have used it for landscapes, fashion, weddings, portraits, and sports. With a 1 GB IBM Microdrive, it takes about 400 high quality pictures in a single session (files come out at about 2 Mb in size depending on features chosen for the shot). A degree of sharpening may be necessary in some shots. The camera handling is excellent and the grip and feel are fully ergonomic. This was my first foray into digital SLRs, having used and owned a non-digital Cannon SLR for almost ten years. Having enjoyed using the Powershot G5 another great cannon camera. I have a cannon wide-angle lens with this camera. IT takes superb photos and if I cannot zoom close enough with the lens when I get them on my computer the images are so large I can zoom in without any loss in perceivable quality. The images are usually of size up to 5mb ... ...in context you can print photos, which are bigger than A4 in full photo quality. I recommend a spare battery and a large memory card nothing smaller than 512mb but a 1GB micro drive would be better. As you will get less than 100 photos on high quality settings with 512mb. When showing it to a professional photographer who has cannon costing many thousands of pounds he was impressed, the only disadvantage to this camera is it does not have firewire ...

The things on the 10D that have annoyed me?
the dark viewfinder which can make manual focussing difficult;

occasional camera lock-ups when the ISO setting is too high.

Advantages: sturdy, reliable and easy to use Disadvantages: Newer cameras have stolen all the attention
Canon has not made this camera for a few years, so you won't get a new one. I have been using my 10D for four years fairly intensively and it has not let me down. Before that I was using a trusty EOS 3.
Thinking that I must be missing out on a few tricks by not having one of the newer cameras in the Canon range I tested out a few. My conclusion: the 10D is still a great camera by any measure. If you can get your hands on one (they are going pretty ...
