...been relatively happy with my Canon A300 camera (putting up with a few minor annoyances) as it produced great pictures for what I need. I take pictures just for personal use. My brother however recently bought this, the Canon EOS 350D and after seeing the exceptional results I couldn't help but have a play round with it (all in the name of research!)

Picking the camera ... ...this and it's predecessor the Canon Eos 300D. It now feels more robust, slightly lighter and more compact. Infact one of the first things I noticed about this camera was how small it was. It is bigger than your regular digital camera but for these kind of proffesional ones it's small enough for even me with my tiny hands to operate easily. The rubber grip is harder and the mode dial is metal. All in all this feels like a well built camera.

The time had come to bite the bullet and go completely digital. No, not me - just my camera. Out went film and folders. Out went my trusty old Canon EOS 50E, which had served me well for many years, and in came the latest toy.
Already having a Canon S9000 photo printer (prints A3 size photo poster prints) and another compact digital camera, I was geared up for the change. That, and it *was* ... ...sturdy as the higher end Canon cameras). The switches all move solidly and feel positive in their action. Some are a little plasticky - evidence of cost cutting, but reflected in the price.
The on switch is easily to hand, the camera starts up and is ready to shoot in less than a second (a big improvement over the older 300D). The Canon autofocus lens (28-80mm) I use for general shots is light and well balanced to the camera.
Press the shutter ...

I have only loaded the basic picture package up so far, as I already have plenty of image software on my laptop. The software I've loaded is mainly for organising and storing the pictures to your computer. All the features of the camera are explained in very easy to understand terms - "if you want to do this, press this button, then this button... etc" - there is also a quick-start guide, which tells you how to fit the lens and battery into the camera as well as the strap - which was the most fiddly bit! - and then ...

If you want to know the fastest compact flash cards for the camera, check out Rob Galbraith's site (robgalbraith.com) and search for the 350D database. This will provide an indication of the best memory cards to buy with the camera for speed.

This is NOT the case. Photography is more about who is behind the camera than the camera itself. Proof of this can be found on DPreview's forums, where some professionals use 300Ds (the camera before the 350D) and get outstanding results. The quality of photos differs greatly ...

...Previously I used a Canon EOS 50E with a 28-105mm lens. I had wanted to move to digital for some time and was pretty sure I wanted to stay with Canon (but did consder Nikon too). However, I was torn between getting at top end "prosumer" compact like the Canon G6 or S70, or pulling out all the stops and getting the 350D. The G6/S70 route had a number of attractions, cost and size being at the top of the list. ...cameras before investing in the Canon EOS 350D SLR. The biggest gripe I had with the other cameras was that the battery life was poor and indoors or night shots were often blurred. Also many of these smaller cameras take ages to take the picture once you hit the button. As a budding, yet very amateur photographer, i have not the best idea of various photographically techincal terms - this makes it difficult to understand most cameras.
Up until i bought this camera, I was borrowing my dad's Nikon D50, to learn the tricks of the trade, and how to use a digital SLR in preparation. ...just been using the new Canon digital EOS350D, the new and improved 8 megapixel camera (it replaces the 6.3mp so I'm told).
A camera nerd friend of mine (maybe I'm being too harsh on him, after all he relies on this type of camera for his job), recently gave me a spell with his new baby, (I don't know how I managed to prise it out of his hands).

Any of the Canon EOS range of lens will fit it, you can buy higher quality lens for it but this will only cost you more in the long run.
You will need one essential item and that is a memory card, a 512mb cf card will cost about £25-£40 but you maybe able to get them cheaper off ebay if you shop around.
You can buy the camera from Jessop's at around £580 or with an 18mm-55mm lens package at £650, money well spent in my opinion.

I bought this camera for £629 from Jessops this August 2005. Along with an EH-18 case for £34! And just to let you know I'm only amature photography so this review won't be as technical as some!

ok, ill start out by saying that im not the most technical minded person, so im not going to go into the whole "the XORS is almost IRUKS to the IXAKH but not quite as the KSNWEIEH" type thing. :) This is basicly a review for the normal person who is looking for a good, affordable camera.

* Price - it is a good budget buy

Advantages: Durable, Great Resolution, Easy to use and great for amateurs -semi pros! Disadvantages: Doesn't have a sensor cleaner like the 400D
The Canon 350D is an excellent Digital SLR for semi pro use. Which is exactly what I use it for. It has a small 1.8 inch screen for preview but boasts an 8 megapixel resolution. Its very easy to use and is compatible with most accessories. Advantages: A quality product that makes you look like a pro Disadvantages: Kit Lens is a bit weak
The Canon EOS 350d, known as the Digital Rebel in some countries, is an excellent camera for the serious hobbiest.
It's a definate move into the semi-pro field and can be as easy to use as a point and shoot or as technically tricky as the fully functional SLR that it is. Firstly to note it's an SLR camera, which means you have to look through the viewfinder and not at the screen. An unexpected parting with my 300D meant that I have recently been in the market for a new digital SLR body and Canon, with the 350D in particular, were the obvious starting point. It is also the camera that I chose, hence the review.
In fairness ... ...have a reasonable selection of Canon fit lenses, so from their point of view it was not exactly a fair fight. That said, if the offerings from any of these companies could have provided a better quality image than the Canon, then I may have been tempted to switch brands.
The headline grabber, of course, for Canon and it's 350D is 8 megapixels - approximately 30% more than it's predecessor and it's competitors. Whilst this doesn't translate into ...
