My interest in phography started when my children were born. Like many parents I wanted to record those important moments of childhood for all time. At first a basic point and shoot was sufficient but I quickly found I wanted to be able to obtain better results. A few years ago we went on holiday to the States. I wanted a camera that would enable me to photograph wildlife and knew a zoom lens would be essential. My local Jessops recommended I buy a cannon powershot s3 1s as it has a great zoom lens and is easy to use. This camera is known as a bridge camera-between a point and shoot and a full ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, good image quality, leading brand, good entry level camera

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Perhaps slightly small

Travels with my 400D I’ve been putting off writing this review for months and months. I’ve been waiting until I know just about as much about the camera as I possibly can, but I’ve come to the conclusion that this will never happen, so I’m just going to do it. It may also have to do with the fact that term ended on Tuesday, I have a massive amount of revision to do, and I’m procrastinating. It’s an unanswerable question. **This is a very long review as I’m going to assume that anyone reading this knows absolutely nothing about photography, so apologies ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages The body is a bit too small for my hands!

When Canon first introduced their EOS300D three years ago they promised that it would be a turning point in the history of photography. To be honest it did just that and this is now Canons third incarnation in in their entry level D-SLR line-up. So, can it hold the flame for Canon still? In one simple, honest answer I believe it's a big 'YES'. Having actually owned a 300D since they were first released I decided it was time to upgrade after three happy, productive years. The price of the camera is staggering for the amount of performance from it. Canon certainly haven't cut corners in terms of ... more

Hi Everyone, I have been using the Canon EOS 400D for about 2 months-ish now, and thought it was about time for a review, I will cover most of the aspects of this amazing camera for you, please, enjoy! Features = First of all, if you are familiar with either the 300D/Rebel, or more so, the 350D/Rebel XT, then you will be familiar with the 400D/Rebel XTi, they are very similar cameras, with progressive growth through the generations. The latest installment, although widely viewed as a kind of 'Facelift' is significantly more than that, there are many physical changes, new features, improved ... more

4 Stars Shooting without the bullets. Ouch Review with images 31/08/2010
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages cheapish, durable, good quality photos, easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages heavy, newer model is better

When I bought it I bought this product back in May 2008, just before my first year exams. Talk about procrastination! It was the worst time to buy it as it was just before the Canon 450D came out, and I wanted to head out and take photos all the time. I purchased it from a website and it was shipped from USA, which proved to be cheaper. As such, my Canon is a "Digital Revel XTi" although it is exactly the same as the UK/EU version. It came with a minor tripod, the EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens What you will need to have You need a battery, battery charger, memory card, lens and camera body ... more

    5 Stars Canon EOS 400D 16/07/2008
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Low cost entry to Digital SLR photography. Compatible with all Canon Ef and Ef-s lenses

Disadvantages Disadvantages Manual exposure fiddly, Kit lens good for cost, but not high-quality

Review EOS 400d The canon 400D is a good camera - for the price it's a great camera. It's relatively compact; lightweight; comes with an adequate lens; has programmed settings for novices - like portrait and landscape modes; but also offers manual control of apertures, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO… so that the more experienced photographers can have fun and be a little more creative. One item to note if you are upgrading from a digital compact is that you have to use the viewfinder. The screen on the back of the camera only shows exposure information, and allows you to view photographs ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent auto functions, good handling, excellent image quality

Disadvantages Disadvantages Kit lens poor at wide apertures

**** Introduction After using my compact digital camera for a couple of years I realised that I was still serious about my old hobby of photography. I could therefore justify an upgrade to a digital SLR (Single lens reflex) camera. I set myself a budget of £500 including "kit" lens and went on line and read magazines to research what there was. Most cameras require an additional purchase of a memory card so I allowed that addition to the budget. At the £500 mark there were two new additions to the market in late 2006 - the Canon EOS 400D and the Nikon D50. In my view, these eclipsed virtually ... more

Advantages Advantages Value for money & most other things !

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lens kit not as flexible, viewfinder not good for left-eyers

I am a Nikon camera user, but this is definitely one of the best SLR cameras around; NIkon and Canon have always been head to head with their visual range of products. The Canon EOS 400D is good for both amateurs and professionals, you may even say it is simply fool-proof, which is sometimes what Nikon isn't (the D50 certainly isn't at times anyway =s ) everything is just beautiful that comes out of it. Even the shutter clicking sound is beautiful. Build ------- The body of the EOS 400D is almost identical to the older version, the 350D, with some subtle changes, for example, the rubber placed ... more

Advantages Advantages Price, design, ease of use, self cleaning mechanism

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Price, its plastic

Let me just say from the beginning, I am not a professional photographer, so as far as writing a review about the performance of this camera at certain ISO settings and all that I would suggest reading a specialist site. I am writing this as the type of consumer Canon has targeted with this camera, and its predecessors the 300D and the 350D. As I write this people have two options, to buy a 400D or to buy a 350D, the 350D being obviously cheaper. I had to make this decision and frankly it just came down to the LCD size at the back for me and to some extent the self cleaning mechanism. The ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Requires additional lens upgrades if you are planning on varied subject photography

As a graphic and web designer I was meaning to buy a decent camera for years. I needed something professional to support my visuals - for taking shots of urban macro textures, printed still life work, fashion models, abstract landscapes and low light photography. I asked around various professional photographers, read a lot of DSLR camera magazines and posted on a large number of forums to get opinions from the people who mattered. I gave them a budget of £500-600, as being a designer, the camera was just to support my current work, not to provide the majority of it. Let's face it - only pay ... more
