Speaking to a few photographer friends of mine, they assure me that this is to do with the APS film rather than the camera itself, and I have to say that as a casual user of cameras, the picture quality is good enough for my purposes.
One final point – the build quality of the camera. I’ve already said that the camera is small, and light. This might make you think that it’s quite fragile, ... ...– I haven’t dropped it yet!). The few moving parts on it seem to be fairly well in place, and apart of the removability (not a real word, I know) of the battery cover (I would have preferred one with “hinges” instead of a removable trap door) everything should stay where it’s meant to stay.
All in all, a good quality camera at a price that can be afforded by all. Thoroughly recommended. ...

Advantages: Incredibly easy to use, Great Photos, Speed. Disadvantages: Price, Flash could be awkward.
...have been a problem but Canon have found a way around it by providing a little plastic thing (I can't think of another way to describe it) that is attached to the Camera's wrist strap and which aids in the setting of the various functions. Of which there are many. Some of the most useful functions are the 'red-eye reduction', which really works, and knowing that you can take pictures in semi-darkness and that they wil come out is quite liberating.
... ...I have found the Canon IXUS to be a wonderful camera. It has transformed the way I take photos and I'm not sure that I could go back to focussing and film loading manually. It does cost a lot but this camera will last for a long time (I hope) and the ease with which I can operate it means I use it so much more. I love my canon ixus m1! I got it two and a half years ago for my eighteenth birthday but it is still fashionable to look at and effective in what it does! (The origional lithium battery lasted two years) Its compact design means it can easily fit in my handbag when I go out with my friends on a night out...and the easy loading film means I can replace it safely even when I've had a drink or two!
The camera has the usual aps options, the three different ... ...little quirks which make it that little bit extra special! You can opt to have various little phrases printed on the back of your photo (such as happy birthday) as well as the date and time. You even get a handy little sticker in the instruction book to stick on the back of the camera which will remind you which menu codes to use for the phrase you want. ...we have not used the Canon M-1 for about 2 years now.
However, at the time of purchase, APS seemed a great idea. It was fool proof, it allowed compact cameras to get even smaller, after developing the photos the negatives were retained in the film unit and you could select different perspectives for each shot.
These were the reasons why I bought my wife this camera.
We have taken many photos in the 2 years of using it and it cannot be faulted ... ...reproduction and most were at the correct exposure. Night time shots were very good as long as the camera is held steady on a tripod. (Keeping in mind that I am a snob when it comes to compact cameras as I use my Minolta SLR whenever I can.)
It's features were limited, but that is due to the camera being the cheapest model in the APS range for Canon. However, the built in lens cover was a good idea. It can be set to take standard, high definition ...

Advantages: Robust, Easy to carry Disadvantages: Possible poor view finder framing
I bought this little camera for its simplicity and size during summer as I was travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia for a month over Christmas.
Given its size I expected to have to treat it very carefully with all its intricate parts but infact it is the most robust cameras I have had. It has been bounced around in hand luggage and dropped on several occasions - even in a stream!
All the photos came out fine although I would say that the view finder ... ...is not exactly what you get. This could just be my photography skills but I have had several other people use the camera and not get exactly the picture they expected to take.
All in all, I would not recommend this camera to the protography experts among you but if you want a point and click camera thats easy to carry and robust then you could do alot worse than the IXUS M1. ...

...Okay, the spec:

Very small size Very light weight - only 115g
One of the best things about this camera (apart from the obvious size advantages) is the case that comes with it, which is nice and sturdy and has a strap so you won't lose it.
The APS films are amazingly easy to load/unload, especially if you're used to 35mm films. However, ... ...they are expensive to develop.
Also, the fact that digital cameras are becoming so cheap and you can find a decent one for less than £100 means this is probably a choice for a child/young teenager or someone who doesn't want the hassle of taking photos off of memory cards.
If there was one thing that was seriously lacking in this camera, it would be a zoom. However, I assume that would make the camera bigger so if you can live without it then the ...

This camera is the epitomy of cool and functional. It looks great, encased in brushed steel and perfectly pocket sized.
It has some superb features, such as the ability to select from some pre-written messages to be printed on the photographs, date and time stamping, redeye reduction and many others.
It takes great pictures in three different sizes, and the pictures ALWAYS come out looking colour perfect!

It’s as big as a cigarette box and can easily be stored anywhere. It is even easier to use and the durability of the batteries is really good. It has a cool special feature by which you can insert messages such as “Merry Christmas”. Changing the formats and zooming are so easy that every child would be able to use it without any problems.
