Advantages: High quality printing, quiet and looks good Disadvantages: Expensive ink, as always
...a snifter under £100 the Canon Pixma MP600 packs a lot of quality into an attractively designed package. Ignoring any pointless fax functionality it concentrates on the main duties of printing and scanning that you need from a domestic machine.
Out of the box ~
Canon supplies everything you need to get you up and running so with the printer you get power cables, ink cartridges, CD/DVD tray and set up disc. You'll need your own printer cable but ... ...one or two but the Canon has a built in alarm to warn you of this. I say alarm but it's more of an angry grinding noise but it gets your attention. The set up disc does everything it needs to do in a couple of minutes and then you're ready to go. There were a couple of extra questions from my Vista OS but once these were cleared there have been no compatibility issues.
Look and feel ~
The MP600 looks very good and I don't mind admitting that this ...

The printer is a nice looking machine in black and silver so quite a modern looking design. Size: Depth 15" to 20" when sheet feeder is open, width 17.5". The built-in scanner has a 2400 x 4800 dpi resolution, whilst the print resolution is 9600 x 2400 dpi. ...

Advantages: Good value, reliable, stylish and reasonable quality Disadvantages: Suspect ICs on the ink cartridges
Bought this printer a few years ago, I wanted a device that would scan, photo copy, print documents and photos. The device uses 5 ink cartridges Big black for mono printing, then yellow, blue , red and wee black for colour and photo printing. This prevents the printer using all three colours to print black. Cartridges are reasonable at around £8 and I only need to change one at time every other month. One issue was the ICs on the cartridges, after ... ...to be replaced. The printer will warn for a few more prints then it will stop printing until the cartridge is replaced. This is very frustrating as you can see the cartridge clearly has ink but the chip says it’s done. Also if it is a colour cartridge you still cannot print mono!!! I found a work around this, you can disable this ink monitoring function that ignores the chips, this nearly double the life of the cartridges. The only thing, it is up ...

Review of Canon PIXMA MP 600
Advantages: Quick, cheap and easy to use for professional results Disadvantages: cannot run on mono only settings
I bought my MP 600 last December after extensive research and I have no doubt that in terms of value for money and overall performance this is the best multi functional machine on the market. The photo quality is excellent with intense vibrant color the 9600x2400 dpi prints are floor less. The prints are fast at 24PPM in color, which is the fastest print I've found at that resolution and the same with the mono prints. The scanner and copier are good ... ...functional printers and being more than most home users would need. The biggest problem with the MP600 is the fact that when a cartridge runs out it won't print so all tanks need to be in place even if you just want to print in mono. The card reader is excellent and will read most memory cards, however you are unable to write to them so don't rely on this as an alternative to a stand alone card reader. I found the the MP600 was particularly good ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: error codes that you have to get somebody out to the machine and pay dearly
I bought a Canon MP600 in Dec 2006. It worked fine till Dec 2007 that's when I had to call Canon as error code 6A00 appeared on the screen and nothing could be done to solve it.
I had an engineer visit me three times trying to repair it. On the forth visit he said he had to take the printer away to his workshop to repair.
After three weeks printer was returned and engineer stated that he had to replace purge motor, paper roller and C.P.U.
Everything ... ...it appears a common fault with the MP600. On getting in touch with Canon repair centre, they quoted me £79 plus V.A.T. just for a call out. Then parts and labour on top of that. I can see now why they call us a throw away society. George Sadler ...
