    Test driving this little piece of equipment has been pure pleasure…….even better than sampling new chocolate bars!! I’ve been spending so much spare time learning how to use it, and haven’t had the time to write this review until now. But having said that, I doubt that I can tell you every detail about it, as digital cameras have so many functions and settings these days. Well, I was preparing for our holiday to Gran Canaria at the beginning of March, and decided that my Fuji S2 Pro would be rather heavy for carrying around, as well as being a much too expensive camera to risk being damaged or ... more

    Advantages Advantages good value, good mode selection, good quality, well built, canon quality, good battery life, good resolution and quality, good manual controls, good LCD

    Disadvantages Disadvantages clumpy, clunky design and controls, too big to be a true compact, interface pauses, zoom irritating, not worth the upgrade from G3

    ~~~~~~Intro~~~~~~ Although I actually got a EOS300D or Digital Rebel body as a digital camera, I looked around before deciding. Now I have some time, I have decided to do the first of a roundup going through my thoughts on each of the cameras I considered. The only problem I have is finding a way of benchmarking the cameras, and sadly these reviews are going to be rather more based on personal opinion. Hopefully by reading my opinion, and then actually trying out the cameras yourself (Jessops are very nice and useful for this) you will be able to make a better decision that suits your needs ... more
    Advantages Advantages Digital control, 16x the zoom
    Disadvantages Disadvantages The weight, the lens obstructing the viewfinder.
    WARNING! This is NOT just another list of technical specs you can read off the Canon web site. I wanted to talk about the human aspect of actual using this camera. If you just want details on the camera skip down to the *******************. I would describe myself as an "enthusiastic amateur", and over the past 10 years have had more than a little bit to do with 35mm photography. I started with a camera that my dad brought back from Libya in the 50's. A fixed length Braun with a manual focus and instructions in German. All I can say is that it must have been love or I would never have stuck ... more
    Advantages Advantages flip around screen, picture quality, IR remote,build quality
    Disadvantages Disadvantages bulky, heavy
    I have owned this camera for a couple of years now and can not reccomend it highly enough. The flip out srceen is ideal for self take photography especially when combined with the infer red remote, allowing one to zoom in or out if needed. The camera is packed with features rivalling those on the basic digital slr's, although i admit to only ever using the automatic, night mode, landscape, and portrait modes on the camera. The built in flash is adequate, but the camera does have a hotplate to attach external flashes, which i would advise if night pictures a common place. The build quality of ... more
    Advantages Advantages Excellent photo quality for a prosumer camera
    Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite hard to use for a techno-phobe
    I am not new to digital photography and have worked with various cameras (other Canon, Agfa, some Sonys and some amateur cameras: BenQ, Aiptek). The Powershot G5 was chosen after thoroughly searching the Internet for professional reviews and also taking into account other people's opinion about it. Everybody praised it. Even the seller recommended it, though it was cheaper than the 5 MP Sony and Minolta by more than 100$. So, how is the real thing? First of all, it has that exceptional photo quality that Canon has put into its photo cameras until now. I have recently compared the photo quality ... more
    Advantages Advantages Lots of functions - ideal for the serious hobbyist
    Disadvantages Disadvantages Only 4x Optical Zoom
    Photography has been one of my hobbies ever since I could lay my hand on a camera. However, it's an expensive hobby, or it used to be. During the years I had a normal camera (one that takes a film), I had to hold back on the number of pictures to take, as the cost of developing the film and pictures mount up. THE DIGITAL AGE Then came digital cameras. I bought one (an Olympus C-800). It was good but being a point and shoot camera, was not enough for me. So the search started for an affordable semi-professional digital camera. THE CANON All roads lead to Rome and all the reviews, comments and ... more
    Advantages Advantages exceptional picture quality - who needs an SLR when you have the G-5!
    Disadvantages Disadvantages the adapter tube for using filters interferes with the viewfinder
    I bought my G5 4 months ago. It was my first digital camera but I have been into photography for over 30 years. I just returned from a one-month photo trip taking 800 pictures, mostly landscapes and flower closeups plus some action shots. I shot mostly on Manual exposure, using the LCD screen to adjust the exposure until the results looked right. My PC's calibrated screen verified the accuracy of this method. A few slight adjustments in Photoshop and they were perfect! All photos were taken at the highest Jpeg because pre-trip testing indicated that the results were equal to RAW and the file ... more
    Advantages Advantages Main features of a SLR in a mear mortals price range.
    Disadvantages Disadvantages The obstructed viewfinder.
    I would describe myself as an "enthusiastic amature" that over the past 20 years have had more than a little bit to do with 35mm photography. I started with a camera that my dad brough back from Lybia in the 50's. A fixed length Braun with a manual focus and instructions in German. All i can say is that it must have been love or i would never have stuck with it. From there i went to my beloved SLR (Canon EOS 300) and spent many a happy year playng with that. I prefer to get my hands on the equipment and work things out as i go along rather than spending hours reading an instruction manual ... more
    Advantages Advantages Excelent Features
    Disadvantages Disadvantages Minor design errors
    Key Features TOP High Image Quality The 5.0 Megapixel CCD delivers the high resolution expected of a camera in this class, allowing photo prints up to A3 in size and more scope for image cropping. This sensor allows the camera to capture still images as large as 2592x 1944 pixels and movies as large as 320 x 240 pixels. Optical Zoom Lens Canon's tradition of superb lens quality continues with a fast f2.0 (W) to f3.0 (T) 4x optical zoom lens, (7.2 to 28.8mm) which is equivalent to a 35 -140mm lens in 35mm format. An optical neutral density (ND) filter - unique to Canon - is built into the lens ... more
    Advantages Advantages Good design, robust, flexible cheap memory
    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lens cap, barrel distortion, purple fringing
    Bought this camera four years ago with IBM microdrive included. In general it has served me well, as it is of robust construction and 5Mb was considered a high resolution. Nowadays you can buy a 5Mb camera for under £100, so it is far from cutting edge. Pros Canon made, so good quality and resilient to bumps and knocks. Good rendition of colours. Will take CompactFlash I and II, so although larger than SD and XD the storage is cheap. I have Extreme 3 2Gb card and Sandisk 8Gb the latter holding about 3,000 jpg images. There is an extensive range of additional lenses. Battery lasts for ages, so ... more
