Advantages: Easy to master, cheap to purchase, accepts most accecories (ie lens, matte box) Disadvantages: Microphone not great, better to use a seperate on a boom.
...'amateur film' and using the CANON XL1S to shoot it I can honestly say I am in a good position to review this item. Using this camera to shoot with was an absolute joy. Its light enough to be carried around for some good steadicam shots but stable enough when on a tripod that it isn't ruining your long or medium coverage.
The inputs and output connection points are all clearly marked so as not to confuse in poor light or dark surroundings and when ... ...obvious to any first timer if you are properly connected or not.
The camera itself is easy to use. The tape draw is easier to open, load and then close without interfering with any of your previous settings so as not to ruin continuity of shots. All the cameras many options and menu items are easy to find and clearly labeled for when you want to change to 16:9 or film in black and white etc.
This camera is a must buy for any filmmaker on a tight ...

...The successor to the Canon XL1 is a brilliant camera, although in my opinion not worth the extra cost above the XL1 price. As far as functionality goes I have struggled to find a great deal of difference between the two models.
One problem that did occur with an XL1S that I have used was the motor on the lens malfunctioning meaning zoom and focus operations failed. This caused a major problem and on further investigation I was informed that this ...
