Advantages: Awesomely sharp. Wide Aperture gives great control. Great colour. Disadvantages: A little fragile. Would prefer with Image Stabiliser.
...to the excellent and free Canon service of calibration (within warranty). My own lens doesn't suffer from this, I have to say, and I do wonder whether some photographers claim that they're not getting a "sharp copy" when they're not taking the time to focus properly.
Commonly referred to as "the brick" amongst Canon users, this lens is noted for its heft. It weighs over a pound, but attached to any camera with two digits or less in its designation, ... ...it to Canon for a repair. Should cost around £100, according to reports on the internet.
So, in summary. It's big and heavy, and it takes some practice to get the best out of it. But when you do, its colour and sharpness are something to behold. Excellent indeed. ...
