Advantages Advantages Beautiful veiws and gorgeous weather! Very cheap with exchange rate!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive flights, not safe at night!

This time last year I was in the beautiful country of South Africa, sitting by my aunties pool sipping Guava Juice, and letting the glowing rays turn my skin into a warm brown. My mum and I went out to South Africa to visit relatives, my Nan (Mum’s mum) my Auntie and her husband and three children (Whom I have never met before) and my Granddad’s brother (My Mum’s uncle) and his family. This was always going to be a holiday full of memories; I have not seen my Nan since I was eight and the rest of my family since I was two. We were to stay in South Africa for 3 weeks, we stayed in Durban for ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots to see and do for a short stay, Overnight flight, time zone - BST+1.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Helluva long way, safety off the beaten path.

Every now and then, you need to do something totally extravagant. So, when we were looking to celebrate a special occasion a couple of years ago, we were thrilled to find a discounted weekend break to Cape Town. Now you might think it is crazy to go all that way for a long weekend, but the beauty is the overnight flights - you get on, watch movie, sleep and hey presto you wake up in South Africa. There is only 1 hour time difference in the summer so jet lag is not an issue. We boarded our South African Airways flight at Heathrow 9pm Friday night. In-flight service was excellent, and the flight ... more

Advantages Advantages Sunny skies, the beach, the mountain, the wine, everything!!!!!

Disadvantages Disadvantages I didn't see them yet

Cape town must be one of the most beautiful places in the world. TABLE MOUNTAIN The mountain is amazing. You can go up by cable car or climb it. From Kirstenbosch, the botanical gardens, you can walk up. I must admit we only walked up a short way so I don't know how long it will take. From the cable car the view is stunning. The mountain is just one of hundreds of things to see. a Few weeks ago was my first time in the new cable car and I must say it is a great improvement. The rotating floor allows you to see all the possible views. THE CASTLE The castle, that dates back to somewhere in the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Value for money

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Risk of crime

Last September we visited Cape Town and had a fantastic value for money holiday. South Africa is becoming a popular destination for British tourists, although many people are still put off by its high crime rate, particularly violent crime. We followed the advice we were given, avoided walking at night and returned safely with lovely memories. When we were there, we got over 16 Rand to the pound, so prices were incredibly cheap. Many things cost us less than half of what they would in Britain. There’s so much to do in the area. We spent just over a week there, which to be honest was not long ... more

Advantages Advantages The most beautiful city in the world, the view of Table mountain from the ocean

Disadvantages Disadvantages The rumor says that there is a lot of crime

This review actually starts in Johannesburg but most of the time was spent in Cape Town and that is why I have chosen to categorize it under "Cape Town" I landed in Johannesburg (also know as Jo’burg) on the 31st of January 1999. The first few days were a bit amputated due to the fact that KLM, together with the Norwegian airline company Braathens, managed to send my luggage to Aberdeen, in Scotland, instead of sending it to Johannesburg. It took them 4 days to locate it and deliver it to me. I don’t think that Johannesburg has that much to offer to tourists. The Kruger Park is not that far ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, good weather, plenty to do.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Long haul flight, distance between attractions

South Africa has had a colourful history that’s for sure. Still, it remains one of the most diverse countries in the world, with 11 official languages and many religions and cultures living under one sky. Politics aside, it has a lot to offer the British tourist and the geological capital, Cape Town, is arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world. GETTING THERE - Its not easy spending the best part of 14 hours on a flight and for the better deals, you will probably have to change at some European airport but I have done this as a small child and an adult and its pretty hassle free ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful People, Great Food, Great Shopping

Disadvantages Disadvantages Relatively expensive for Africa

Beautiful people swirl in a kelidescope of culture in this wonderfully vibrant city. Capetown offers everything, from shopping and partying to chilling on the beach or learning about South African culture. Overlooking it all, like a wise and unchanging grandfather towers Table Mountain. A spectacular site from any angle at any time of day, it is particularly impressive in the morning when a thin "tablecloth" of cloud cover often drapes over the edge of the mountain, turned candy floss pink by the sun's early rays. For me it is the mountain that divides Capetown neatly in two. The Camps Bay ... more

Advantages Advantages Incredible scenery; lots to do; great weather

Disadvantages Disadvantages Crime, safety, transport problems

I spent Christmas out in Cape Town, with family who live out there. I've been before, I would happily go back again. Cape Town is an astoundingly beautiful city, with breathtaking natural surroundings - Table Mountain, the beaches at Camps Bay and Clifton, the coast down to Cape Point. The natural beauty would be number one recommendation for sight-seeing in Cape Town. Table Mountain is well known and is the obvious attraction. There is a cable car up to the top, where you can have astounding views over the city and out to sea. There are also numerous walks and hikes on the mountain, for those ... more

Advantages Advantages V.Cheap cost of living, drive on the left

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Definite 'no-go areas'

Cape Town, sun, sea, wine, and a dirty great chunk of rock. Cape Town and the surrounding area must rate as a must see on any world travellers tick list. The main feature is the omnipresent Table Mountain which is as spectacular from the bottom looking up as it is from the top looking down. The old harbour has been redeveloped into a shopping/eating/entertainment centre which gives an idea of what could have been in Londons docklands, the advantage the undeniably have being that mountain again, flood lit at night with clouds spilling over the edge forming a majestic backdrop. But the city and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Exchange Rate

Disadvantages Disadvantages Everyone wants some money

Southern Africa is one of the most stunning places to spend a few lazy weeks (or months in my case) and with a strong pound in your pocket, you can enjoy fine food and wine for the price of a pub lunch at the Beefeater. However, Cape Town, just like any major city, has a criminal element ready to take advantage of unwary visitors. The balance of wealth still weighs heavily in favour of the white population, but the promise of housing and jobs from the Government, has increased the flow of black South Africans south from the Transky, looking for work and decent living conditions. The shortage ... more
