...intertwined to make the fictional Carrie White.
Carrie was Stephen King's first novel, the main success of the book does lie in the film starring Sissy Spacek as Carrie who was nominated for an Oscar for her brilliant acting role. Carrie is probably the only film adaption from one of his books that he has been satisfied with and enjoyed as he seemed furious with Stanley Kubrick's the shining and decided to oversea a new version of the film.

...we’re told early on that Carrie and her mother are both overweight to varying degrees, but with the mental image of Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in my head it was hard to picture them any other way.
As someone who has seen and enjoyed the movie a few times, stumbling across a hardback version of the book in a second-hand shop for the bargain price of 29p made it an obvious puchase – heck, at that price any book is an obvious purchase! ...

...was not very much. Carrie was his first book (the first of many) and was accepted for publication in 1973 by Doubleday publishers. This meant that King would be able to leave his teaching job and be able to write full time, which he did! (end of history lesson!)
The book I have is certainly not a first edition although it was the second King book that I bought (the first being Salem's Lot - look out for a new review coming! lol). The book is available ...

...read (or seen the movie) Carrie yet?? I wouldn't dare to call myself a fan of Stephen King if I haven't. Not only it's his first book, published in 1974, the first of the neverending row of his bestselling novels, but it's nothing but pure horror story. I admired every aspect of it, the narrating, the dialogues, environment and characters. I think it's the characters that turned Carrie into a legend.
The storyline

...Small wonder then that Carrie is as maladjusted as she is. The result of these circumstances is a girl very similar to somebody you knew at school, the quiet girl in the corner who never seemed to get on. Therein lies much of the novel's genius. When the girls in the locker room taunt Carrie over her first period, you might well remember doing something similar to you own girl in the corner. Here you'll get a chance to see in a fresh light some of ...

Carrie is Stephen King's first novel. Written in 1973, Carrie would have been scrapped if it weren't for King's wife who encouraged him to continue writing. The version I read has an introduction written by Stephen King himself that explains how he came about the novel. Carrete White is a combination of two girls King used to know at school that were both bullied and abused. Her story is to represent what must be going on inside somebody's head after ...

Her life begins to turn around when she is asked to the school prom night by popular Tommy Ross (an idea brought about by his girlfriend after feeling ashamed for what happened ...

Advantages: brevity, character development Disadvantages: unusual format
...of you who don't know, Carrie is a story about a girl who is bullied into religious fanaticism by her over-zealous she-bull of a mother, which obviously makes her an awkward social outcast at school. This leads to years of bullying that leave her numb to most things, untrusting, and bitter. After she discovers that she can control her telekinesis, or TK, ability, she finds new strength in herself to deal with her tormenters. She even finds courage ...

...to rectify that. I chose Carrie because I was intrigued by the idea that a man would choose to write about an adolescent girl in such a honest, revealing and painful way.
My copy had a foreword by King where he says that Carrie was based on two girls he went to school with (one with a very religious mother, the other the typical ugly misfit), who were ostracized because they were different to everyone else. King then wondered 'what if these girls ...

Advantages: Get a taste for The King Disadvantages: none
Carrie was the first novel Stephen King had published. Compared to his other books this is brief. It only has 222 pages, which any King reader knows is usually about a fifth the size of his normal novels. The book was first published in the UK in 1974 .It's strange to read his early work but you know where the talent comes from. Carrie was made into a film in 1977. I have not seen the full film yet .
