Advantages: Easy to use, reliable, batteries last AGES! Disadvantages: No solar panel to back up batteries
I first got this calculator when I was 13 or 14 years old. Our maths teacher told us we needed a scientific calculator and although I already had one, it was different to the one the teacher had. The teacher told us we could buy one through school and this way we would all have the same calculator. Normally it wouldn’t bother me if I was different but in this instance I wanted one the same, as calculations are sometimes worked out slightly differently ... ...it happily in many lessons and exams since I first bought it.
~ What is a Scientific Calculator? ~ A scientific calculator is a more complex calculator than the usual calculator you may use. Scientific calculators support mathematical functions such as trigonometry, statistics, algebra and scientific notation.
~ Why would I need one? ~
GCSE maths, and A-level sciences and maths require the use of a scientific calculator. I couldn’t have got through ...

Advantages: simple, easy to use Disadvantages: outdated
This is the Casio FX 83MS Scientific Calculator, for typical use at high school level. This is what you need to keep up in maths at school at GCSE level and beyond. The extra functions of a scientific calculator are necessary for this level of work and are still useful even if you just want to use a calculator simply.
Anyway, that applies for any scientific calculator, now what about this one? This is a Casio which is a good sign straight off. Casio ... ...many different versions of the Casio scientific calculator and most are very much the same with a few modifications every now and again. This is the one I have at hand so it's this one I am reviewing.
The calculator has a ten figure display screen with the ability to hold up to around 75 characters in the top half of the screen where you type in your problem. With many different modes this calculator is advanced enough to get you through your GCSEs, ...

Advantages: easy to use, stylish case, durable, good make Disadvantages: strange battery type
...off i have owned my casio FX 83 MS for 5 years and it is still going strong on the same battery and without any problems exept a slightly worn case. This calculator takes a lot of abuse from me as i use it frequently and have a tendency to drop things on hard surfaces! This treatment has never phased it though and it still keeps on making mathematical miracles happen everytime i use it. The calculator has all the usual nice friendly maths signs like ... ...1-9 and 0. It also has a handy Ans (answer) key so that you can insert the answer to your previous problem into the next problem without typing it all out in full ( very handy if you have a number with lots of decimal places!)
It is, however, also a scientific calculator so it has scary buttons on it too! I won't pretend to know what all of these do but it has trigonometric functions, scientific notation, and lots of other weird and wonderful maths ...

Advantages: cheap, good basic calculator for A levels or GCSEs Disadvantages: not solar powered
I got this calculator for my 10-year-old niece as she wanted to start using a calculator to do harder sums. Her mental arithmetic is quite good, so I assume she didn’t want it to cheat on homework or anything !
It is very easy to use and the packaging suggests “Ideal for Key Stage 3, age 11 years and over.” However, my 10-year-old niece was using it quite easily!!
S-VPAM (super visually perfect algebra method) logic allows sums to be entered as ... ...sum and answer simultaneously, which is always useful!
There are 240 functions in total. However, the average joe would probably only use a small fraction of these! The main statistical and trigonometric functions are on this calculatir making it a good basic calculator for GCSE and A levels. Batteries are included as unfortunately this calculator is not solar powered. However, calculators don’t really use that much power, so I assume the battery ...

...the standards of my old Casio which I've had since school days.
DESIGN
The size and shape I find are perfect. It's not fiddly and the buttons are hard plastic, not rubber. Rubber buttons are easily pulled out during moments of extreme frustration. The buttons on this will survive such episodes. The cover slides off the front and slides onto the back while the calculator is in use - this saves you from losing it. Although I have wasted time looking ... ...instructions I would still rather have half the number of keys to press.
Overall I'm happy with it considering the price, less than £8, but I will think more carefully before buying a Casio again if a calculator with simple features turns out to be complex to use. ...

Advantages: lots of functions Disadvantages: It feels a bit cheap
I bought this calculator during the summer to replace my existing calculator; the Sharp EL-531RH because I thought it was a good deal for a scientific calculator. I only paid £5 but once had taken the packaging off, i could see why it was so cheap. The buttons feel especially cheap, being only fairly low grade plastic, but what can you expect for that price. The design and general look of the calculator is alright and there are a lot of functions, ... ...would need to get you through your GCSE's and A-levels. It has a dual line display so that you can see the calculations you have written and you can edit it without having to rewrite the whole thing. There is also a multi screen playback feature that allows you to have a look at previous calculations without rewriting them.
So that it doesn't get damaged, there is a hard case to protect the buttons and the screen that does a good job. One thing ...

Advantages: Easy to use, large display and clear labelling. Disadvantages: No solar panel.
Where to start...a great little calculator which has been my faithful friend for 5 years. Unfortunately now I no longer need it but thought I should sing its praises! I shall of course be keeping hold of it as it is a very easy to use calculator with clear labelling of buttons and a wide dispaly so numerals are easy to see. The protective lid has some formulae on, though never managed to understand them, and the amount of functions it has on it is ... ...it doesn't use up much battery and is very helpful, even converting decimals to fractions to top heavy fractions!I would truly recommend this to anyone stidying maths at high school! It has been so helpful to me!
Normally costs about £7 (i got mine from Argos) though i am sure you could purchase them more cheaply off the internet and can be used for maths, physics and any other subject where you may need one!
As well as featuring simple functions, ...

I have been using the Casio fx-83 ES calculator since my Gcse's and it has never let me down yet. With a natural large display screens and a huge array of features the calculator is one of the best budget calculators your money can buy. It lets you do multiple sums such as sin cos tan and for when students get to A levels Logs. I have had this little number pad since year 9, i am now in year 13 and have carried everyday for Maths. It has never let me down. i was told to get one by the teacher at school and did so and it has been a little gem in the lesson.
Plenty of features to go on about but its biggest selling point is its reliability. you also have your shift and alpha keys which enable you to press different buttons other than the main ones, all of the symbols with ... ...get the hang of.
Also if you were to make a mistake you have an arrow button where you are able to go back and change your selection. this is handy due to the fact it will save you having to write all of the information out on the keypad. ...

Advantages: Cheap, Simple, Does everything you want. Disadvantages: Small Batteries. Last a long time though, so not really a problem.
I have had this product since Year 7, now going onto A-level maths, so had to buy a Graphics Calculator, but this one never ailed me, the only time was when the batteries were low, and it was slower to respond. New batteries and all was fine. I don't know every single function, and it took a while to learn most of the ones I needed but I have a good grip now, and did by about Year 10. Simple to use once you know how, but also does everything I have ... ...go back and edit equations without retyping them.
It was the one my previous school recommended, and when I changed in Year 8 I was recommended a new one, by Sharp, but I kept this one, and never struggled with it. Mine didn't have a reset button when the Sharps did. But mine never needed to be reset, whereas the Sharps did. ...
