Theres no doubt Channel Four were the Zeitgeist of TV channels in the 1980s and where the kids would weld their TV knobs. In fact when the red triangle appeared in the top corner they would be twidling their knobs all night! The red triangle, if you didn't know, meant fairley uncensored naughty and nudityt and we loved it! Taping Russ Meyer movies shown at 3:30 on Satruday morning (famous for their fabulous big breasted gals) was what it was all about back then if you were a red-blooded young male! C4 was also streets ahead in sitcoms, documentries and news programs in the decadent 1980s, as ... more

Advantages Advantages You need a VCR to get the most out of it.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some wierd timings chosen.

Somewhere in the catacombs of the Channel 4 headquarters is a small office full of highly educated and probably very well paid but little known officials called “Programme Schedulers”. These representatives of C4`s backroom staff obviously have an extremely difficult job to do. Their task is to plan the schedules of C4, sometimes months and sometimes years in advance, in order to successfully comply with and fulfil all the competing criteria of a modern TV station. If we consider what some of these criteria might be, a few of them will probably spring to mind to us untrained in ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent range of programs of high quality

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesnt have Bad girls, shows cricket matches

I always think of channel 4 as being the package holiday of the television world. Once there you can watch whatever you likr for free and the entertainment isnt all that bad. Get bored and you can walk to another resort such as the BBC for a little extra in the way of laughs. THE TOP PROGRAMS: Well, I have to say that I am personally a fan of this channel, simply because it has all the shows I like. The main head shows are as follows: * Brookside(Weekdays prime time) * Hollyoaks(Mon, Weds, Thurs prime time) * Frasier (Friday night) * Friends (Weekday evenings/friday night) * 4 Music (Thursday ... more

Apologies for this being about a show on C$, but as that said show has ended, I doubt that CIAO will give me a catagorey so it has to go here. Hence also why all ratings at end are mid-range. The last series finished about 3 years ago. It was the best camera related show that has ever graced our screens? You think Big Brother and it's however many cameras are good, this was amazing with only 6 cameras. The show I am talking about is 'Wanted'. The basic plot was that 3 teams of two had to go across the country for a week. Each day they had to perform a certain task. For example, one team had to ... more

    Advantages Advantages stupidly funny

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None from me

BANZAI- Japanese-style game show. 10.30pm Channel 4 I’ve seen other Chinese and Japanese style game shows, but this one is on channel 4 so if you haven’t got sky/ sky digital you can still watch some crazy entertainment without paying extra cash. Banzai sets up a number of challengers for each show. “Those dick is real” You will see 5 men stood in a line each with very bulging out under pants on. The screen will then flash different colours and then this stupid, but extremely funny Japanese man will shout “betting begin.” Then he will say “betting over ... more

Advantages Advantages Great for the younger generation

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be boring on sundays!

You know when you find yourself lying in bed, flicking through the channels looking for something to watch, well then I bet if you’re aged 15-30 (I’m generalizing here!!) that you normally end up watching channel 4. Why? Well basically because channel 4 is the only station that seems to cater for people in that age band that want to watch something entertaining that night and that’s just what channel 4 does, provides you with entertaining, if not a little weird program’s. It’s not just at nights that channel 4 excels itself though. In the morning there are often ... more

5 Stars Four is More 24/06/2001
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Has a wide range of excellent programmes

Disadvantages Disadvantages The excellent programmes aren't on until night time.

Channel Four stands as the best channel on terrestrial TV at the moment. It's alternative to the mass-market dross on ITV, the plain simple boringness of BBC1, and a pathetic waste of time in the shape of channel 5. I think it can only really compete with BBC2, maybe because these are the channels I watch most. Enough of the other channels though. Football Italia is the main sports coverage, Gazzetta is an brilliant show on a Saturday morning (if I'm up to watch it.... I'm so lazy), mainly because it cuts out the boredom and diving of Italian football and just shows the goals. Gary Richardson ... more

Advantages Advantages A good range of shows across most genres especially comedy.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some poor films, some poor production on certain shows.

Of the five terrestrial television channels, Channel 4 is probably the best. Their range of programmes is very broad and, though I cannot claim to enoy everything they show, is generally of very high quality. Channel 4 usually compares well with the opposition, providing more quality entertainment than programmes that are likely to attract huge audiences. Take soap operas, for exmaple. While BBC and ITV flog the traditional, popular and intolerably bland "Eastenders" and "Coronation Street" respectively, both of which regularly draw over 16 million viewers per episode, Channel 4 targets more ... more

    5 Stars Four Play 26/02/2001
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Publicly funded for a wide range of people

    Disadvantages Disadvantages American comedies

As a lover of nationalisation of certain industries, Channel Four stands as proof of the quality of government regulated television. It is up there with the best channels there is (i.e. the BBC channels) and if it were to be sold off, it would be another government crime against our society. But enough of my political ranting, time to concentrate on TV. Channel Four is very similar to its main competitor BBC Two in many ways. It offers a real alternative to the mass-market dross on ITV. Again with this review, I’ll put everything under headings for ease of reading, but if you don’t ... more

Advantages Advantages Does show some good drama - if you can find it/stay awake long enough to catch it!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Uncaring of viewer preferences. Garbage TV for the most part

Channel Four used to be the channel of choice for discerning viewers who were fed up with the same-old, same-old garbage coming out of BBC and ITV. It was innovative, catered for a wide variety of tastes, showcased some grounnd-breaking UK comedy and was the first to get some of the best US drama around, such as ER, NYPD Blue, Northern Exposure and so on. It also had the grittiest soap around, Brookside But what's happened to it in recent years? Brookside is a shadow of its former self, seeking after sensationalism instead of genuinely good storylines. And where's all the good, gritty drama ... more
