Advantages: Quick Internet access, ISA option, reasonable pricing Disadvantages: One market only - ie. LSE or US; basic online features
* A well reputed transaction house with a 'big company' backing
* I've found the online access quick, if a little basic - none of the more complex graphing or analysis type features.
* If what you want is a transaction-only account with good internet access offering quick trades, and a simple 'bank account' statement of your holdings and transactions this is a good service.
* Trading is on the more expensive side, but £12 for < £1000, £15 for ... ...up side there are minimal account charges, just a small quarterly charge, £5 I think. So your only costs really are the trades
* You can bundle stocks into your own self-select ISA which is an attraction (£5 monthly charge applies - but tax free, obviously).
* The free trades for 1st month is great - esp. if you've got a whole portfolio you would like to set up - probably what clinched it for me!
* Access to International Exchanges are not available, ...

...own at no charge.
Despite Charles Schwab's lack of competetiveness in terms of charges, however, they are one of the more professional outfits around and I must admit that the two or three encounters I had with their customer service department were very well handled and gave an understanding and competent impression of the company. Charles Schwab, then, are a great bet if you don;t want a snazzy site and aren't worried about an extra fifty pounds ...

Advantages: real time quote and free news feed Disadvantages: slow, bad customer service
Charles Schwab Europe is the first online broker in UK and is affiliated to its Charles Schwab of USA. Although affiliated, their services fell far behind their American counterpart. Email to them is only replied after several days, and access to their website is slow. The quality of their customer service also varies and can be good at time and becomes impossible to get through during busy hour. So, in violent market condition, just sit there and ... ...up side, they provides low cost dealing, real time quotes and free news service provided by Reuter. I would say they are not the best online broker but is probably still as good as many other online broker who eager to gain market share without putting in much investment to develope the infrastructure. ...

Advantages: Excellent web site Disadvantages: Not the cheapest
I am new to share dealing. Having a PC on the web I decided to use an online stockbroker mainly because of the cheaper fees. The web site is easy to use and simple. There is an alternative telephone service also if the web site is down. Also every transaction is backed up by a paper record sent to your address. So if all the computer records are lost then you can prove what shares you hold by the paper record. Another nice incentive is that the first ...

Advantages: Fast fill Disadvantages: Unsure about the TouchTone
Schwab's service is very fast, especially real-time filling. However, there seems to be a problem with the TouchTone trader feature, for me at least, I last time I had an account with Schwab they never sent me the TouchTone trader features. The MarketMaster account is good, I have not however tried the Frequent Traders Club. The US$ accounts seems to be a much improved feature from the last time I had an account with Schwab. I like this broker, very ...

Review of Charles Schwab Europe
Advantages: Fast, reliable, reputable Disadvantages: Costly, no frills
I am a member of Charles Schwab Europe's Internet Dealing Line. I chose Schwab because I believe you get what you pay for and Schwab is a highly regarded broker. Trading fees are higher than average, £15 to £75 a trade with their basic service (Market Master) or a flat £19.50 per trade if you subscribe (£60 per year) to their Frequent Traders Club. The service is FAST and friendly and their support service is excellent. The downside is that the execution ... ...place a limit for that day's trading and they do not take stop-loss instructions.
They do offer access to real-time Reuters info services but this costs £10 a month after the two week free period. They also offer no-commission trading for your first 30 days.
Overall, very fast, very secure and guaranteed to be able to MAKE YOUR TRADE, but do not expect all the bells and whistles. If you trade A LOT with large sums (excess £10k trades) these are ...

Advantages: The biggest, good gor trading overseas shares. Disadvantages: Service leaves a lot to be desired
I have used Charles Schwab as a stockbroker in the past, but I dispensed with their services some time ago, as I was far from pleased with several aspects of their operations. Accessibility was not good; I did not consider I got the best dealing prices; some errors were encountered; and it often took inordinately long for documentation to be received. I frequently had to contact them regarding my problems, but as a relatively small dealer, I felt ... ...me the brushoff.
I now use smaller brokers who seem to place greater value on the smaller investor, and who have systems and procedures that meet the needs of the smaller investor.
Have a look at the more favourable reports on some of the smaller brokers before you decide who to put your trust in!! ...

Incompetence cost me hundreds. When I first joined I sent them my share certificates wishing to sell them. They said that they couldn't sell them without transfer forms. In the two weeks it took them to send me my certificates back the tech stocks took a dive and I lost close on a thousand pounds. They were also very slow at answering the telephone, a 20 minute wait was not unusual. I also found that I couln't use my internet account and although ... ...leading to higher commissions. Advantages: friendly efficient accurate Disadvantages: charges
I have used Charles Schwab for a few years now starting with a normal account, then they introduced dealing through the phone & finally the online accounts. The customer service has always been excellent - phone calls with no delays, friendly & efficient service. Likewise by post or email there's never been any problems. I've got 5 separate accounts with them and often have strange requests which are never a problem for them. Having moved address ...

Advantages: Touch Tone Trader Disadvantages: Quarterly charge
Schwab has a good range of services such as it's internet and TouchTone Trader.(TTT)
If for whatever reason you can't get to a computer, the automated telephone touch tone trader allows you to deal at the same commission as on their website. (We know how steep commission can be on the phone.)
Size........Telephone...Internet & TTT
£0-1000........£20...........£12
£1001-2000.....£24...........£15
£2001-4000.....£36...........£24

I much prefere the percentage commission on deals rather than the present band pricing as you may be paying far more than what you would somewhere else.
eg. £1001 in percentage terms is 1.5%. £15
Mailed Quarterly Statement and reciepts are very useful when filling in tax forms.
The customer service is exellent and I have never needed to quibble. Nominee only ...

Advantages: Efficient, ease of use, accuracy Disadvantages: None
Charles Schwab came highly recommended by a friend and business partner, so we chose them as our only broker last October. We've only had one slight glitch with them in all that time, which turned out to be my fault in the end. The reassuring thing was though, that ALL phone calls are recorded. If ever there was a problem that turned out to be their fault they will put it right at their expense (so I'm led to believe - untested at this time). Paperwork ... ...accurate. Charges seem to be average as well.
I've since started trading online as an individual. It's been very easy to trade, check my account and to get real time prices. Often the actual trade price is below the stated market price, so I believe I've been getting good value.
I have no complaints with Schwab at all and can only thoroughly recommend their service. ...

charles schwab have an excellent marketing campaign, and indeed are well liked "over there" - ie in the states. However, users thinking of joining schwab need to fully understand a few vital things about the uk schwab operation before transfering to it.
firstly, they are not simply schwab usa but "over here" - no, what they did was buy a uk stock broking firm with the intention of beefing it up to serve their uk operation.
Sadly, in the process, ... ...site design and robust easy to use trading online all got compromised in the process.
Of all the new online account providers, this one has received ongoing criticism from media and individuals alike.

Advantages: 30 day commission-free trading on new accounts Disadvantages: high charges, poor service
I started dabbling in online share-dealing about 3 months ago and am therefore no more than a baby in this field. However I do have an opinion on the services provided by Charles-Schwab (CS). I will not attempt to list all the problems since there were far too many ... ...joining them I have had to call them at least 25 times with errors they had made on my account. The REAL costs of a Charles Schwab Frequent Traders Club account... Since June of last year I have had an on-line share dealing account with Charles Schwab and as well as having two Maxi ISAs, I am a member of their Frequent Traders Club.
