Advantages: A thought-provoking read. Disadvantages: Not completely satisfying.
...holocaust, so my interest in Children of the Dust was piqued and I bought it from Amazon for £4.99.
The novel arrived yesterday and I finished it a few hours later. With its striking cover, it is a book you want to read without delay and it is easy to finish, due to both its compelling story and its brevity at only 174 pages. SYNOPSIS
The novel is split into three parts, each one featuring one main character - Sarah, Ophelia and Simon. Each part ... ...you may not want your children to think about. However, in our increasingly scary world, our children are learning many things we may have wished they had remained innocent of for a while longer. (I had to explain what a suicide bomber was to my kids on Thursday and when they asked WHY someone would kill themselves in that way, what is the answer?)
Anyway, the book certainly doesn't seem to be 'dumbed down' for kids and as an adult, I didn't find ...

...to my shopping basket.
Children of the dust is written by Louise Lawrence, has one hundred and seventy five pages, split into three chapters, and also a RRP of £4.99. It’s classed as a children’s book but I will get into that a bit later.
Chapter 1 “Sarah”
“It was such a perfect day, a promise of summer with cloudless blue skies. Swallows were nesting below the eaves of the caretaker’s cottage and out on the sports field year nine were playing ... ...book for, I’m not saying children would not gain anything from reading this book far from it but I’m not sure that if I was a parent I would want a younger child reading about so many horrible ways to die, rabid wild dogs, mutants, and the extinction of life, I know they can see much worse on telly but when its in there imagination it’s a different story.
Anyway I completely recommend this book to anyone as a bed time read or a way to pass a Sunday ...

...leaving Veronica and the three children to try to survive the holocaust. When Veronica cracks under the strain of trying to survive, Sarah, the eldest child, takes control. Only one of them survives, but goes on to be the building block of a new, better society. Bill Harnden was presumed dead, but a stroke of luck meant he got in to a nuclear bunker. He grew accustomed to life in the base, but sooner or later the remaining family members and their ... ...say no more (don't want to give away the whole plot!), but I will say that the rest of the book is good. It's not good because the story is particulary thrilling or exciting, it's good because it makes you question loads of things. What are we doing on the planet, what are we doing to the planet, religion, government and many other 'meaning of life' things. I never know how far to dig in to things. You could give me a piece of text with deep meaning ...

...stepmother Veronica and the three children Sarah, Catherine and William who are at home preparing for the inevitable nuclear winter, and the father, Bill, who is at work and, by chance, manages to get into a nuclear bunker. The description of events is chilling and realistic. It is a 'what would I do in this situation?' sort of story. And those of you who love animals, I defy you not to shed a tear...what would you do with your beloved pet if you ... ...think. ...a good sign. Children of the dust describes a fictional nuclear war in Britain and how one family manages to survive - but not in the way you would think. The book spans the time from when the first warnings sound to nearly 50 years after the Armageddon. Advantages: Inspiring and Haunting Disadvantages: Haunting
This is a book for teenagers that I studied at the age of 14 but I loved it so much I had to buy as an adult. It is a really hard hitting thought provoking book that covers quite a few moral issues and utimately leaves you feeling grateful that you get to enjoy the little things in life, birds tweeting in the morning ,rain on your face etc etc.
It is split into three chapters - three generations and begins with the potential end of the world and ... ...First Chapter entitled Sarah begins with the alarm to sound the beginning of nuclear war, Sarah arrives home to settle herself into a room of the house where she is to spend the foreseeable future trapped in with her step mother and very young step sister and brother.
