I will start with this because I think it is the thing we all want to know about when considering buying a car. I paid nothing for the car as it was a gift from my Dad when I passed my test. ... ...few faults which are common to Saxo's. For a 1996 SX you can expect to pay £600. That's if it's running right. Before you purchase I would ask the seller when the last time the brake system, drive shafts, clutch and exhaust was changed. These parts need replacing on an average every 3 years. Depending on the driver, the drive shafts will last longer but only with a steady driver, not a racer.
Now then if you do need to replace these parts it's not ...

"AAAhhh, it's a little Citroen Saxo."
Yes, for about a year now I have been driving around in my little Saxo, and I now feel qualified to tell you something about it. This review, I'm afraid, comes four years too late, as the Saxo went out of production in the year 2000. It has since been replaced by a more 21st century, bubble-like car, the C3. There no question that the C3 is the nicer of the two, with its chic French curves, however at £9.000 ... ...accelerate quicker, but driving the Citroen Saxo is not about speed. Nor, in fact, is it about driving in comfort and luxury: The seats are perfectly comfy, but the interior seems to be made exclusively of black plastic. My car, the Saxo LX does not have air con, it does not have a sun roof, it does not have central locking, nor does it have electric windows, heck, it does not even have a CD player. But, it does have one redeeming feature- character.

Advantages: nimble with good performance for its engine size, fun handling Disadvantages: Steering takes getting used to, basic interior, basic equipment
Before I carry on with the review, I must confess to being a French car enthusiast, previously owning 205 and 309 models. I drive a Mini One and a classic Escort amongst other cars. However, I will try not to let this colour my writing on this particular car - which is owned by my girlfriend. The Saxo is the last in a line of lightwieght compact and fun french hatchbacks, which in many ways started with the 205 design and include the 106, and AX ... ...and mechanical layout. The 106 shares its shell with the saxo along with torsion bar rear suspension which gives the car a nice supple ride for its size. The Saxo has a reputation for not being particularly strong in an accident. If this is at all a problem for you then dont consider this car. It isnt the most reliable, having a number of niggly problems (none serious or expensive to fix). Again, if this is a problem for you, buy a Honda or Japanese/German ...

...I opted to buy a Citroen Saxo Desire 1.1i three door hatchback. I bought this car from new in 1997 (P reg.) and still have it four years later. I have managed to eke out 110 mph out of this little baby, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone as I felt a little unsafe in such a small car going so fast.
This car cost me just over £8,000 pounds with some added extras like an alarm and basic trim fittings, however now that prices have gone down ... ...and look for special buys Citroen has on purchasing new cars.
I would especially recommend the Saxo to first time younger buyers, older people who will use it as a town run-around and those of you who do a lot of city or town driving. I would not recommend this car to people who do a lot of motorway or long distance drives. This is because of the comfort factor and those bigger car drivers who try to push little cars like Saxo’s into the inside ...

I don't know too much about cars so it will probably come to no surprise to those is similar positions to me that I took my husband along with me so i didn't get ripped off!
After many searches and looking at many varieties of small car I chose a Saxo East Coast,1.1i 3 dr.
The first thing to say about my nippy little car is that I love it. I chose a special edition, which really only meant I had a CD player rather than cassette radio, sporty seats ... ...each seat, yellow gear knob, metallic paint and blue colour on the speed dial etc. Basically the differences were visual rather than any thing different to the mechanics of the car. However, it gave the car a special feel to me.
The car also came with immobiliser, apparantly adjustable steering wheel (can't say this for certain as the wheel is fine where it is so I've not needed to change it). The plastic dashboard bit in front of you has a nice ...

About the car
---------------
This is a great little car that has many good points and a few little niggles. I purchased this car in September 2000 (X-reg). I chose the colour Poseidon Blue (Metalic). At the time Citroen were giving a years free insurance away with the car, which as a young male driver this I found was invaluable. The basic on the road cost of the car was around £7200 after the cash ... ...I didn’t go to a Citroen main dealer to have it fitted as they charge around £45 + Vat an hour labour. Instead a friend of mine who owns a car audio and security fitting company installed it for me. So the cost was less than going to a main dealer. The total cost came to £280.

Advantages: runs smoothly, good features Disadvantages: colour choices
I have always stuck to Citroen when it comes to cars because they are reliable, not too expensive but still have all the advanced features I want in a car. I used to have to use public transport all of the time, not that it is a terrible thing but buses are never on time and you can't go on long journeys at your own pace and do your own thing going by coach. I needed a car for work.
I went to the used car company when first buying a car and bought ... ...up at the good old Citroen showroom which was impressive. I already had a Citroen so I could trade this in and get something of the final total. There were so many nice cars but I wanted something quite small not really big so I decided on the Citroen Saxo. There is the Forte and the Desire but I liked the look of the Desire better and I wanted a 5 door this time because the last car I had was 3 door. 3 Door isn't as good when you have people sitting ...

...little car. I had a Citroen AX GT before it, and the Saxo is a vast improvement on the old AX chassis.
I bought the car in a moment of weakness. My AX was going wrong......the bottom end was knocking like a postman and it was emitting more pollution than an old Boeing 707 (apologies to people who haven't seen a B707 taking off!!) I was bored one Saturday and was browsing through the local paper. I saw the Citroen advert offering £189 per month for ... ...it, I was at the Citroen dealer! I hadn't intended to buy, I was just browsing. Of course, the salesperson was following me like a bad smell, although she certainly wasn't that!! I was shown around a Special Edition version of the 1.1SX - it was virtually the same except body coloured bumpers and a CD player. All for £195 per month............I was tempted and she knew it.
We went for a test drive, it drove so smoothly compared to the AX, and it ...

Advantages: good looking, decent spec, nice to drive, nippy Disadvantages: Main dealer prices and customer service
This is a great little car which I highly recommend. Yes, it's got a few faults (which car hasn't) but so far it's given me 2 years of pretty much trouble free motoring.
It's nice looking (MUST have foglights or it looks incomplete!), stereo is adequate, has central locking, sunroof, keypad immobiliser, economical (450 miles of town driving on a tank), electric windows.
Mine has been nicknamed Saxo-van due to its great carrying capacity. The back ... ...managed to get a large sideboard in it (with the boot closed too!) which wouldn't fit in a new golf!
It's very nippy, and smooth and quiet to drive. Even when travelling at 70 - 80 mph it's still got some oomph!
Two little niggles:-
1) the pedals are too close together - takes a while to stop hitting the accelerator when you want the brake!
2) my front windows rattle when down!
My only other gripe has not been the fault of the car but of the ...

...definitely not affiliated with the Citroen Saxo 1.1 East Coast.
With only a 1.1; it lacks the power and aggression of its VTR counterpart. And with a multicoloured interior (e.g. each different seatbelt is a different colour; yellow gearknob) it's not exactly the cool image that one may be looking for. Well, coming with a free 2 year full insurance (no age limit); it is a rather attractive purchase at about 7000 pounds new. For the newly qualified driver, insurance is a huge problem, often being over 1000 pounds in the first year. Though it is an expensive first car, with either a healthy bank balance or generous parents, it is a sensible buy.

The Citroen Saxo 1.1 First is a vast improvment in the old entry model Ax and is a suprisingly nice drive. The 1.1i engine has enough power to weave in and out of city traffic and keep up with the fast moving traffic on main town roads but feels stressed on motorways as it only has a 1100cc 4 cylinder 60bhp engine which accelerates suprisingly quick. The French made Saxo has decent bulid quality and looks a solid car.If its looks you will definetly ... ...dated alongside rivals which is why it is not so popular on UK roads.

The Saxo pleasingly arrives at 60mph from a standstill in 12.8 seconds which is around the same as the Peugeot 306 HDI lx! Which has 90hp.The Saxo goes on to a lessimpressive top speed of 100mph which is enough for motorway journeys but feels underpowered and lacks overtaking power at high speeds.

Advantages: Light, fairly fast, lots of little extras Disadvantages: No central locking, red paint bad to clean
The Citroen Saxo was first brought out in 1996, and to its credit it was better than the old AX. The model however was still old and not particularly well built. The mk II (W reg Onwards) however is a vastly improved machine with much better looks and an engine which is the same but still manages to pull better. The colour coding of the interior is also fantastically sporty, red seatbelts and dials.
The cars 60bhp engine is well enough for anything, ... ...status symbol and seeing as citroen are not as fashionable (Although getting better) the price is much lower for much more.
The service we recieve from the citroen garage is second to none. for example I got in the saxo one day and tripped a switch which disabled all my instrument panels somehow, bit of a pain in the backside, so I rushed upto the garage before it closed (It was about 4:30) and the mechanics had all gone home. Advantages: Great town car, economical to run and have managed to fit an amazing amount of stuff in (including a 6 ft tree out of the sunroof, a complete patio set and a full-on Ikea buy-out - not bad!). Cheap to service and is quite nippy when it isn't full! Disadvantages: Can't adjust rake of driver seat so my husband has to stand on the clutch pedal to get in! Also, very low braking on the pedal - this is a design issue & technically safe but can feel v last minute.
I bought a metallic green Citroen Saxo Forte 1.1 3dr in April 2000 for the princely sum of £6k which was £1200 off the list price at the time because no-one seemed to want metallic Woodland Green. It has been a very reliable car - now done 45K miles and apart from one warranty niggle (airbag light faulty) and the stepper motor having just had to be replaced it has been fine.
