Advantages: Powerful, corners well, very secure (good alarm and immobiliser) Disadvantages: Fuel consumption, uncomfortable driving position, servicing costs, high insurance
...and should according to the Citroen literature easily cover 33 miles per gallon around town and 38 on the motorway. In actual fact you can expect with some harsh driving to get in the region of 25-28 miles. When topping speeds over 70 miles per hour you can literally watch the petrol gauge drop.
The braking is shocking. Too hard and the car takes on a life of it's own and too little and nothing happens!! It was quite scary at times that a car designed ... ...can only be repaired by Citroen dealers due to the specialist tools required.
A standard service for the VTR cost £175 for what was in effect an oil and filter change.
The weighted alloys cannot be balanced by anyone else again down to the specialist tools required and Citroen charge £8 per wheel. Tracking is extra. Thankfully my VTR never broke down and the only part that needed replacing was a fuel filter costing £25.
*Would you buy one again?

Citroen Saxo VTR, 2001 Y Reg Black
This car was bought by my boyfriend in May 2006, with 30,000 miles in practically immaculate condition apart from the fact it was a insurance write off due to theft with no damage. 1. The Interior of the car
This paticular saxo had an upgraded interior with a very nice 'velour' type material, which compared to other saxo's I've driven and been in was much more comfortable and looked a lot smarter. It also had ... ...VTR's, and I would say Citroen should have definitely installed a passenger airbag like on the VTS, due to the amount of crashes I have seen with these cars!
The standard radio/CD was very good and would play all CDs I put into it, including CD-Rs. The dash was well set out with the dials easy to read due to them being white. The heaters were quite quick to heat up and the demister very efficient. It was suprisingly spacious for a small car and ...

Advantages: Speed,Comfort,Looks,Drive Disadvantages: Interior, Fuel economy at high speeds
I have had a Citroen Saxo VTR now for 9 months, which I have enjoyed every minute of. The car itself on looks, in my view is amazing, the Mark 2 version which I own has more curved headlights than the Mark 1 version with more rectangular shaped lights, personally I prefer the former. The poseidon blue paintwork shines very well in sunlight, and is very eye catching. The interior is a bit tacky and very rattly at times, especially driving along uneven ... ...look no further than a Saxo VTR, you can pick one up with around 60000 miles for around 1500 now, with the prices dropping due to the new "C" range by Citroen being introduced.

Advantages: Cheap to buy, low insurane, quite nippy Disadvantages: Not as quick as the VTS, No electric Mirrors
I have a 1.4 and a VTS model of saxo but did recently testdrive the later 98bhp model
The Good Points
Its has a brilliant insurance group think its a 6 or 7 compared to the 16v VTS which is a group 14, ideal for younger drivers.
More econimical than the VTS so won't be at all bad if they are thrashed.
Styling is up to date with a phase lift model after 1999/2000, has the good looking body kit that the sports models have. Nice subtle alloy wheels.
... ...play down the country lane twisty roads, will grip the road really well with the right tyres on.
The Bad Points
All the usual saxo problems such as, brake aren't brilliant, sunroof leaks, steering knocking and over sensitive alarms although all these can be fixed quite cheaply and upgrade brakes make a hell of a lot of difference i have peugeot 306 gti-6 brakes on my VTS and i can't fault them the stopping power is double of the original brakes.

Advantages: Really good drive, low insurance and servicing, good on petrol. Disadvantages: Uncomfortable to sit in, no electric sunroof.
My girlfriend has owned a Saxo for the last couple of years. It were bought from new and she got a years free insurance with it! The impressive thing is is that since she bought the car she has not had a single thing go wrong with it. We were also very suprised as to how cheap the insurance were when she did have to insure it. For a 1.4 it is extremely nippy and does excellent on petrol around town. With it being a smaller engine however, it does ... ...Overall the car is a really good drive, it has excellent handling, has good excelleration, is reasonable for insurance and servicing and also is extremely reliable.
If I had to point out a few disadvantages then it would be that the car is not very comfortable to sit in, there is no electric sunroof yet their is electric windows and also, I dont know whether anyone else finds this a problem, but the peddles are too close together??

Advantages: Nippy, Looks and fun. Disadvantages: Fuel economy, space and specification
I have a Saxo VTR, attracted by its looks, and performance for the money I had available. I paid £2000 for mine, a 1998 'r' reg. I was all smiles but it hasn't lasted. Most people who get one are young and want something to look good in and that pulls well. However, the amount of problems and downfalls of this car are numerous. I'd say if your anywhere near 6ft dont bother getting one as you'll struggle for headroom and footspace. The mpg is rediculous, ... ...get anywhere and there is no power past 5000rpm, so 300 miles is about all you'll get off 50litres! Oh and some people claim 127 as it's top end... rubbish! Book speed is 116, or about 120 down a hill, honestly... but dont brake from that speed as you'll need a runway to stop if you don't want to lock the front tyres and let the car do its own thing. If you do buy one, make sure you check the tyres, without michelin's or something decent you'll spin ...

I own a VTR which i bought from new,i love it, it's fast, reliable, looks good and can beat most cars away from traffic lights (ofcourse not including the VTS).I was impressed with the standard features for the price, cd player is basic but ok, sunroof is again standard but you get alot of air comming in from the roof which is nice on a hot day, also for a hatchback it is nice to have windows in the back that open slightly, i haven't sat in the back ... ...is so there is one down side.Very impressive on fuel, before i got the car i looked around, and for the same engine else where 1.6L 12V it is very good on fuel, for example the Peugeot 307 1.6L has a combined of 39.2 where the VTR has 42.1, also a ford focus, mazda 323,astra sxi, all are below the vtr's.
The VTR also holds it's value better than most cars, i saw 1 just the other day a P reg VTR @ £3995.I haven't had any problems with the car, everytime ...

I bought my current Citroen SAXO VTR back in August 1998 ( S-REG) from new and this is a reflective test i'd like to share on what i think of the car...
The 90's was a strange time to look for a sporty supermini, all the major manufactures were fighting to bring out their new models asap but not many was interested in bringing sporty versions out at the launch date.Price was at a premium so Honda and Mitsubishi were out of my touch.
Citroen's SAXO ... ...the great offers and aggessive pricing. The VTR was the better value at around £2000 cheaper than the VTS & the VTR came supplied with 2 years free insurance which enabled me to afford a few extra's added.
Considering Citroen's past model's reliability and rust issues i have had 8 years of hassle free motoring and still enjoy driving the same car today as i did the first day of purchase.
I've always liked the shape of the body and visibility has ...

Advantages: Sleek, Sporty looking and Affordable Disadvantages: Hard Ride which feels every bump in the Road
I bought my Citroen Saxo VTR a year ago brand new and could not be happier with it. It comes with some nice features - sporty seats, white sports dials, alloys, spoiler and just overall looks good.
I may be tempting fate but in the year i have had the car i have had no problems with it in the slightest. Its good value for money as the deal i got included a years insurance and also no VAT.
I do agree with some of the other reviews though - in bad ... ...do have to be careful when taking sharp corners in the wet (like any car). The VTR is not especially designed for long journeys but is great for nipping around in the city and generally looking good. I am 5'11'' so i find it gets little uncomfortable after an hour of driving.
The 1.6 litre engine does give this car some zip off the lights and also on the straight roads however you can feel every little bump in the road.
Good car for a first time ...

Advantages: Looks, Handling, Low Insurance, Great Fun Disadvantages: Seating position, Pedal arrangement, Sunroof
I bought a Saxo VTR in sept 2003, I paid £4,495 for a V reg with 32,000 miles on the clock which I thought was a bargain. I bought it privately off a 20 yr old girl and it was in great condition. It was black and still had all its standard gear on she had not modified it.
Before this I had a 1.1 Fiesta which was a heavy slug which could n't handle corners and as soon as I got in to this car it was awesome.
They really are quick for what they are ... ...you can really turn heads. I would not go crazy on the mods, as sometimes i feel like it spoils the car and remember it is still a small car and if your thinking of sticking a set of 17" alloys on it your going to struggle.
The best thing about this car is driving country roads, and hence the title yes it is the best fun I have had in a car. You really can stretch this car.
As with everything there is some down sides the footwell is very compact ...

Advantages: Looks great, a nippy little mover Disadvantages: Replacement parts are expensive as is servicing
I own a Saxo VTR which was bought new, it looked good then and still looks good 2 years on. It has some nice features including sports seats, white dials, good electric pack, multi player cd, etc (however a lot of these touches are add ons and don't come as standard which can add up).
I find it fairly spacious and comforable car, but at just over 5ft is it any wonder. Taller people may certainly feel a bit more cramped and if you have a car full ... ...well - it feels like you're trying to move a tank, and seems to take forever to pull away.
It is a nippy little mover, gets upto 60 at a more than reasonable pace considering it's only a 1.6 engine, and can certainly shift when it wants to, that said however, the road handling isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Yes, you can hurtle around corners and put your foot down on open road (in reasonable weather), BUT the slightest hint of a bit of windy ...

Advantages: Nicely nippy, good cornering Disadvantages: plasticky interior, Bit of an uncomfy ride sometimes
I had always wanted a VTR ever since they came out, I eventually owned a 1.4SX (T reg 1999) but still lusted after the sportier VTR. When I finally got one (53reg 2003) it was very similar in many ways. Although a lot nippier it had more or less the same interior, not necessarily a bad one though. It comes with electric front windows, sunroof, cd player, power steering, but none of the luxuries you might expect on a car towards the top of it's series ... ...That, and the dash board is a little plasticky.
However it is a good sporty little thing with low insurance, only group 7. It handles well and corners comfortably. Still good looking with it's curvy wheel arches, front fog lights, and shiny aloy wheels. Security wise mine came with no alarm but believe some do. The front seats have always struck me as a little uncomfortable, but certainly not unbearable.
There is loads of room in the front, but ...

Sadly, in spring 2003 some mindless *#$! broke into the car & nicked the stereo making a mess of the driver's door & the rear of the back seat where the power amp was mounted and although this was reasonably well repaired, the car never quite felt the same - the repaired door ... ...car was left open in the rain.
