...less of a "plot" - City of the Beasts reads more like an adventure novel in parts. Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book has a lighter feel to it than others I had read, and I found myself wanting to get to the end to see what happened. In summary, this is an interesting story, with a strong plot and enthralling magical detail. It would be a good choice for a holiday read, or a lighter choice for a book club discussion. ...

Another classic on South American culture, this time the mysterious tribes which are dotted along the Amazon. Allende's writing puts you right into the heart of the Jungle, and right into the heart of South America. Tribes hidden from the eyes of the moden world are slowly being destroyed by the lack of immune defences against common illnesses found in Western nations, leading to more conservation to keep them protected, but how do you protect them ...
...are puts them at risk. This story tells of a doctors plight to save these indigenous tribes but as always there's a baddie out to destroy their good work. Lovely easy read, good descriptive and powerful characters. Due to the writing style, its definately recommended for younger children. A great introduction to her work. ...
