ComDirect has to be the best online stockbroker that I have come across. I found their site by accident and registered for their online "Fantasy Sharedealing" game which was great fun although I didn't win. This is ideal for the novice trader and you are given a fixed amount of virtual money to buy and sell shares. Disadvantages: Lack of debit/credit card funding facility and therefore very slow to set up first trade. Interest payable is a paltry 2.5%

They do offer, if pressed, to accept the cost of a CHAPS bank-to-bank transfer which will reduce this timescale by more than half. I joined comdirect more than 18 months ago now, and enjoyed a very successful first 6 months. I haven't been as successful since, picked a couple of poor stocks and hung on to them for too long, but oh well, have still done ok. Comdirect charge a flat fee of £12.50 per trade, though you have to remember that when purchasing shares, you also have to pay 0.5% in Stamp Duty, not much but worth considering when considering your profit margins, thats ... ...have left it alone. Having used comdirect for a number of years I must admit I was somewhat nervous about this change of name and ownership. It usually spells the end of the service you have come to expect. But you will find the site easy to use for both newcomers and old hands alike. The comdirect website home page is clear and easy to use, all you have to do is enter your account number and pin number. I joined comdirect recetly from TD Waterhouse. Waterhouse are one of the big boys and seem to be acting as if they don't care any more. It was quite refreshing to come to comdirect and receive the quality of service i like. The account was very simple to set up. I transferred from selftrade to comdirect some months ago and feel they offer a much more comprehensive service than selftrade. The're fee structure is comparable to selftrade and choice of funds available to invest are more substantial. Customer services are quick and efficient - taking minimal time to deal with queries. ...with the services provided by Comdirect but they no longer exist! I don't know exact dates but it must be at least 2 years ago when they became Squaregain and then were subsequently subsumed into Selftrade. Since moving to Selftrade services have continued much along the same lines although I have noticed a drop in standards when it comes to doing anything that is slightly out of the ordinary. I opened an account with Comdirect after playing the Game on their website- i recommend everyone has a go - just to get a taste of what their site is like. and it's very good. With useful charts , and detailed quotes, up - to-date news; it is also very navigatable. (if that is a word).
