Command & Conquer: Generals (PC)

One of PC strategy gaming's most influential franchises comes scarily up to date, inviting the player to take command of technically advanced armies in a world that's teetering on... more...the brink of war. Command & Conquer: Generals also successfully maintains the hybrid of strategy and battle that have made its ancestors so revered. The game presents three armies in need of command--the US, the Chinese and the Global Liberation. The game is subsequently broken down into 27 single-player missions. To throw in a further twist, you now command a general. As you progress, the general gets promoted and this opens up new technologies and tactics. The most obvious move forward is in the graphics, with the action more close-up and detailed than before. In some ways, it takes a leaf out of the book of the excellent Medieval: Total War, but Generals is a strong game in its own right. Made suitably accessible by a tutorial campaign, it's surprisingly simple to control yet presents numerous options to mull over in every situation. The missions are varied and challenging and the arsenal of weapons--from hardware such as a scud storm through to a simple kamikaze car driver--keeps the brain constantly ticking. Perhaps it doesn't stray too far from the tried and tested formula, choosing to do most of its building on the sturdy foundations set over the years. But there's little denying that this is polished, highly addictive and engrossing entertainment. And if you play it online, it could very easily eat your life away. --Simon Brew The armies that will clash in Command and Conquer: Generals are the super powers of United States and China, and a massive underground organization, the Global Liberation Army, bent on drowning the world in anarchy and terror. Each of the three sides represents a distinct geo-political viewpoint and will fight the war with vastly different tactics and weaponry. To make the experience of modern war as immersive as possible, EA Pacific is using a proprietary state-of-the-art 3D engine, code-named "Sage," which delivers unprecedented detail and interactivity. Because of Sage, Generals' battlefields will include fully modelled urban cityscapes, rugged deserts, vast forests and frozen wastelands. Amazing special effects will allow players to crush cars with hulking tanks, blow out the windows of skyscrapers, or lace the skies with smoke from duelling fighter planes.Generals will include a full single-player campaign along with a full multiplayer component played over a LAN or the Internet.

Lets tear it apart General.

Advantages: Excellent graphics.
Disadvantages: Too short. In game stories are longer than actual game play.

Command and Conquer Generals is the latest addition to the command and conquer series. Produced by EA games it allows you to build your base, defend you base and destroy your enemy and your enemies base and build great armies and lead them to victory. Command and Conquer Generals is a strategy warfare game and has changed a great deal from all of the original Command and Conquer games. The game is now in 3D graphics and is aesthetically pleasing, ...

A Flawed Classic That Could Have Been A Stonker

Advantages: Excellent Unit Design, Excellent Sound, Fun For A Fair While
Disadvantages: Missions Get Reptitive Quickly, Very Little Replay Value

The C&C Franchise is the big name in PC strategy gaming. Anyone who is anyone knows exactly what the C&C name entails - Excellent, rich gameplay, fun missions, and great graphics and sound to boot. Red Alert and Red Alert 2 are 2 of my all time favourite games, especially playing them against mates at a LAN party... ah the time I must have wasted... So anyway, with Generals, and the move to a fully 3D environment, I was expecting more of the great ...
...sound and effects. Unfotunately, whilst delivering in the shiny department with beautifully crafted units, terrain and scenery, the game seems to be lacking a certain something, that factor that makes you sit up and say "Wow!" The gameplay is classic C&C, with base building, resource gathering and of course enemy destroying. The problem with Generals is that its, well... boring. Yes, it will entertain for say, a month, it did for me, but you will ...

Advantages: Excellent Graphics, Good Gameplay
Disadvantages: Gameplay too Short

...the best yet of the command and conquer series. It beats all of its predecessors on game quality, graphics, believability and smoothness of the gameplay. It does, however, lose out to almost all of them on longlevity. You can choose from two game types, multiplayer (where you can play against both computer and human playes) and the single player campaign. In both these game modes you can choose from one of three teams, each with their own strengths ...

Most of the are, however, quite interesting. Graphics: The graphic strength of this game is easily its strongest asset. You can zoom in and out on the map without making the images blurred or even slightly pixelly. All of the units are beautifully tailored and ...

Almost a General Maybe Only a Colonel

Advantages: Improved 3D engine, intuitive controls
Disadvantages: Big video card required, too long animated introductions

The latest Command and Conquer offshoot is Generals. The game is now part of the Electronic Arts (EA) stable as Westwood has lost its independence. I first played the original Command and Conquer back in probably 95 or 96 when it was possible to defeat the enemy AI by building sandbags half way round the map. At that point in my life, days tended to disappear and sleep was seriously lost. Over the years and sequels that included Red Alert, Renegade ...
...erected i.e. Radar with the Command Centre or through a new option – Promotion. Promotion is earned through a variety of ways, building a number of units, killing a number of units and so on. These let you have access to things like A10 Thunderbolt strikes, Artillery strikes and so on. The super weapons are predictably destructive but a little unimaginative – a Scud Storm, A Nuclear Missile and a Particle Ray. On the Normal Level – I have found ...

A General hit all around.

Advantages: More realistic, better graphics than previous titles in the series
Disadvantages: Takes a more up to date PC to run it

This is the latest installment of the CnC series. It didn't seem so long a go that i was playing the original game...how time fly's by. I have to say that of all of the CnC series i utlerly enjoyed playing on this one the best. Unlike the previous games in the series, CnC Generals have adopted a whole new look. By making full use of a brilliant 3d engion and updating the graphics this is an already massive hit. Set in the not to distant future CnC ...

...although units are somewhat weaker. We aint got no stinkin' FMV?! After the Bog standard EA Logo, usually C&C players would be able to feast upon some sexy FMV sequences. Shockingly enough, FMV is the one thing which is seriously lacking in this game. Ok, there's a cool enough intro and three endings, but none of these use real actors or much in the way of voice actors, and use footage from filmed in-game cutscenes. There had been a short movie ...

The game runs wih smooth graphics and user friendly control system and a pumping sound track that will surely get you in the mood for some serious destruction as the battles commence. As a fan of all the previous C&C offerings I was much relishing the release of this game and considering all the hype my expectations where high. How badly let down I feel. Command & Conquer Generals: Generally...I like it!

Advantages: Addictive gameplay, better than predecessor, excellent multiplayer
Disadvantages: A couple of small things fixed with Zero Hour expansion pack!

...Playstation, I have been a Command and Conquer fan. It really took hold when I eventually got around to owning Red Alert 2 on PC. Generals is in a sense an updated version of the Red Alert series (unlike tiberian series of games, too futuristic for me!). The graphics are better, the gameplay is better and yet it has not lost the Command and Conquer feel. It has retained some of the better qualities of Red Alert 2 such as the ranking/ veteran system, ...

Fortunately the Command and Conquer Zero Hour expansion pack has fixed the problems we found and just made the game immense, but as this is a review for the game not the expansion I will disregard this in my rating.
