Advantages Advantages If you ignore it, they will go away.

Disadvantages Disadvantages They have`nt gone away yet.

CompuServe is one of the original Browsers, I have even been known to have this software on my system, not for very long I grant you, but It has been there. In fact there once was a time when all 3 computers in the house had CompuServe as their browser. BUT THAT WAS 8 YEARS AGO! And the reason all the family got rid of CompuServe was that it was crap! It was unstable, HIGHLY irritating to use and just like the equally annoying AOL, a swine and a half to remove from your computer. But come now I hear you cry, that was 8 years ago. Give CompuServe a break, surely they would’ve fixed all ... more

Many many moons (at least 7 years ago, maybe longer) ago I opened an account with Compuserve. The service was excellent, they had terrific forums where I met lots of like-minded people and made lots of friends. There was also an online community "Worlds Away" where I happily wiled away the hours playing bingo with my virtual buddies. ~~~ Subscriptions ~~~ Yes this wonderful service cost you money, but back then free Internet access was a thing of the future. Because their basic package only included 5 hours before you were charged for your online time (hey I was online 5 hours a day!) I ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good Service

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No competition

Compuserve This Internet Service Provider has to be one of the worst. It did used to be a top class contender but over a couple of years their standard has dropped. You can get a better offer well any where really even in your local dixons with Freeserve. They are old news and it’s time that they show a bit of competition and compete with the best like Freeserve. They have just tripped over and should get back up again because they actually offer quite good service. They will just have to try harder to get my custom. ... more

Advantages Advantages content, support, wide range of services

Disadvantages Disadvantages expensive, too many pop-ups

In fairness to Compuserve , I must disagree with rowemg's opinion. As to the problems with Windows 2000, yes, we've had problems too, but it was with the Windows - it refused to acknowledge our printer or scanner, and kept jamming up. Compuserve, like our printer company, LexMark, and computer manufacturer, E-Machine, were not given a copy of the new Windows programme until the day before it was released to the public. So they had no time to work out any bugs between it and their systems. I have very few problems with Compuserve as a service. I have a 3 yr contract, and got a free computer, so ... more

    Advantages Advantages errr........

Disadvantages Disadvantages get spammed and scammed

Beware of bogus emails claiming to be from Compuserve requesting your account and bank details. I remember this being reported as news about a year after it happened to me when I joined Compuserve. I don't know if Compuserve have done anything about it since, but just in the case they haven't, please read on. The first email I ever had came about 5 minutes after joining Compuserve and that was porn spam. The second email came a few hours later, apparently from Compuserve Accounts and was titled 'Problems with your account'. It asked me for my name, address, Compuserve account details and ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Too expensive

I think the days of paying for an ISP at home are all but over. Nowadays, there are too many alternatives to paying for a provider. When the internet first infected my life 4 years ago, there was not a lot of alternatives around. you either went with AOL and paid a rediculous sum for a one year sign up or Compuserve at 6.99 a month for about 10 hours on line. Thank goodness those days are gon or I would owe millions in extra hours on line. The modern approach of paying local call charges only or a one off monthly subscription to your phone comany and choosing a free ISP is a much better Idea ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages no support for win2000, terrible support

I run an e-mail system for a company and they use Compuserve to setup a VPN for this. Therefore I have a lot of experience with Compuserve and most of it has been bad. The software seems to take over the PC and annoying messages appear all the time asking if you want to connect to compuserve.Even while you are connected to a lan. This I can fix but it shows how little thought has gone into the software they supply. Compuserve 2000 does not support windows 2000. indeed it took me many calls and a lot of different compuserve people before I got 2000 to work with it at all and then it was me who ... more

Advantages Advantages share ware registration scheme, global coverage

Disadvantages Disadvantages just about everything else!

I used compuserve for a year. The service is awful. The service is massively overpriced. The supplied software is shoddy. The mail service is non-standard. You ARE a number. The provided content is well, rubbish. You will spend ages getting the connection to work. The connection is sluggish. The connection is unreliable. It takes days to get through to technical support. 10 reasons to steer clear of compuserve. The only redeeming feature is their shareware registration scheme where you can register shareware and have the cost billed to your compuserve bill, useful if you only have a switch ... more

    Advantages Advantages None

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard to login.

I installed Compuserve and it stopped several other programs working. I could not login at all. I would rather carry on paying call charges, at least with Freeserve I have no problems. Compuserve is a total waste of time, money and effort. I have tried several ISPs and this is definately the worst of the lot. If Compuserve want to stay in business they need to improve their software and make it easier to login to the service. I would not recommend this ISP to my worst enemy. I recommend putting their cd`s straight in the bin. ... more

    Advantages Advantages Lots of forums.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Call charges.

When I first got the internet there was so many internet services providers offering special offers such as so many hours free or free access unlimited but I went for compuserve. When I joined compuserve I had to give my credit card/bank account details to allow me to access the internet I paid eight pound per month which I thought included phone costs so I was spending hours on the internet thinking my calls were free. I also noticed that whenever I searched for something it was never found which at times was really annoying. The good thing was there are lots of forums so you can always find ... more
