CompuPants and 8 years of being crap

AdvantagesIf you ignore it, they will go away.

DisadvantagesThey have`nt gone away yet.

"CompuServe is one of the original Browsers, I have even been known to have this software on my system, not for very long I grant you, but It has been there. In fact there once was a time when all 3 computers in the house had CompuServe as their browser. BUT THAT WAS 8 YEARS AGO! And the reason all the family got rid of CompuServe was that it was crap! It was unstable, HIGHLY irritating to use and just like the equally annoying AOL, a swine and ..." Read review

Pay For No Internet Access

Advantagessee op

Disadvantagessee op

"...amount I am charged by compuserve but they bill you in US dollars so it fluctuates according to the exchange rate. I can't tell you their current subscription charge as it doesn't seem to appear prominently on their site. ~~~ Hanging On ~~~ In these glorious days of free Internet access, I don't need to pay Compuserve any longer. The virtual community moved out of Compuserve and became generally available on the Internet, and frankly it went downhill ..." Read review

Thw Worst Out !

AdvantagesGood Service

DisadvantagesNo competition

"Compuserve This Internet Service Provider has to be one of the worst. It did used to be a top class contender but over a couple of years their standard has dropped. You can get a better offer well any where really even in your local dixons with Freeserve. They are old news and it’s time that they show a bit of competition and compete with the best like Freeserve. They have just tripped over and should get back up again because they actually offer ..." I give them 3 out of 5

Advantagescontent, support, wide range of services

Disadvantagesexpensive, too many pop-ups

"In fairness to Compuserve , I must disagree with rowemg's opinion. As to the problems with Windows 2000, yes, we've had problems too, but it was with the Windows - it refused to acknowledge our printer or scanner, and kept jamming up. Compuserve, like our printer company, LexMark, and computer manufacturer, E-Machine, were not given a copy of the new Windows programme until the day before it was released to the public. So they had no time to work ..." Read review

Warning - beware bogus emails

Advantageserrr........

Disadvantagesget spammed and scammed

"...emails claiming to be from Compuserve requesting your account and bank details. I remember this being reported as news about a year after it happened to me when I joined Compuserve. I don't know if Compuserve have done anything about it since, but just in the case they haven't, please read on. The first email I ever had came about 5 minutes after joining Compuserve and that was porn spam. The second email came a few hours later, apparently from ..." Read review

Fighting a losing battle

AdvantagesNone

DisadvantagesToo expensive

"...one year sign up or Compuserve at 6.99 a month for about 10 hours on line. Thank goodness those days are gon or I would owe millions in extra hours on line. The modern approach of paying local call charges only or a one off monthly subscription to your phone comany and choosing a free ISP is a much better Idea. While Compuserve always gave me a great service while I was with them, Freeserve have taken over the market along with its competitors. ..." Read review

Why Pay for this?

Advantagesextra content

Disadvantagesno support for win2000, terrible support

"...a company and they use Compuserve to setup a VPN for this. Therefore I have a lot of experience with Compuserve and most of it has been bad. The software seems to take over the PC and annoying messages appear all the time asking if you want to connect to compuserve.Even while you are connected to a lan. This I can fix but it shows how little thought has gone into the software they supply. Compuserve 2000 does not support windows 2000. indeed ..." Read review

look elsewhere

Advantagesshare ware registration scheme, global coverage

Disadvantagesjust about everything else!

"I used compuserve for a year. The service is awful. The service is massively overpriced. The supplied software is shoddy. The mail service is non-standard. You ARE a number. The provided content is well, rubbish. You will spend ages getting the connection to work. The connection is sluggish. The connection is unreliable. It takes days to get through to technical support. 10 reasons to steer clear of compuserve. The only redeeming ..." Read review

complete washout!

AdvantagesNone

DisadvantagesHard to login.

"I installed Compuserve and it stopped several other programs working. I could not login at all. I would rather carry on paying call charges, at least with Freeserve I have no problems. Compuserve is a total waste of time, money and effort. I have tried several ISPs and this is definately the worst of the lot. If Compuserve want to stay in business they need to improve their software and make it easier to login to the service. I would not recommend ..." Read review

Compuserve-what a rip off.

AdvantagesLots of forums.

DisadvantagesCall charges.

"...for compuserve. When I joined compuserve I had to give my credit card/bank account details to allow me to access the internet I paid eight pound per month which I thought included phone costs so I was spending hours on the internet thinking my calls were free. I also noticed that whenever I searched for something it was never found which at times was really annoying. The good thing was there are lots of forums so you can always find someone ..." Read review

How do they stay in business!!?

AdvantagesNone

DisadvantagesThink of the worst ISP you have experienced, then think of paying £10,000 for an A reg Fiesta, that is how bad Compuserve is!

"...and hourly rate to use Compuserve with all the free 0800 ISPs that are out there today. My last experience with Compuserve was when I took a free one month ten hour trial with no intention to continue after my tens hours had been used! I didn't find it particularly fast, I had absolutely no interest in the content and the Compuserve software reminds me of a Freeware web browser it is so bad and needs a major facelift. Compuserve must be laughing every ..." Read review

Complete rubbish

Advantagesnone

Disadvantagesexpensive, bad login, unstable software, unstable connections, slow connections

"I installed Compuserve and it stopped several other of my programs working and left me with several system registry problems, all of which can be done without when you have better things to do than repair your computer because of poor software. I could not login at all initially with a costly call to technical support being required only to be told that they couldn't help me and recommended formatting my system. I would rather carry on paying call ..." Read review

slick and slippery.

AdvantagesBig bucks,slick systems,easy to use

DisadvantagesOpium of the masses approach........lowest common denominator catered to.

"I have been with Compuserve several times over the years including a couple of 'free' trials.........and they were ok when it was free but when one finds oneself paying (through the nose !) for something which granted is state of the art but is clearly aimed at the 'fanily entertainment' net user rather than those who also seek something more,it becomes time to shop around. On each occassion that I decided to sever my connection with compuserve I ..." Read review

Totally useless!

Advantagesnone

Disadvantagesdear, lack of support, slow conenctions

"...it upon myself to install compuserve to see what Aol's main rivals at that time were like. I have to admit it was the worst thing i have ever done! Installation was scrappy with the software writing over most things i had preference to, connection speeds varied at around 45k each session, the billing system was useless and the lack of customer support didn't install much confidence either. I would not like to reccommend this ISP to any person after ..." Read review
