    Advantages Advantages Learn lots, in two useful disciplines, good facilities, some great lecturers

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Some not so great lecturers, not much help with placements, VIVA assessment and moved exams!

    Anyone who’s been to university will surely remember that seminal phrase from family and friends back home! Sure, you’re at university to have a good time, absorb the atmosphere, and generally to get a little ‘life experience’. But first and foremost, you want to come out of the other end of your course with a degree – that’s what you’re working towards. And boy do you work!     Advantages Advantages The third year is all optional modules, so should be more fun

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lecture rooms uncomfortable, some lecturers are dodgy, some of the compulsary modules are murder

    I've spent since September 1998 (but for the odd 4 month summer break, and the like) at Birmingham University on their Computer Science and Software Engineering BSc course. I came here because it seemed like a pretty swinging joint, and my parents both enjoyed it back in the olden days of their youth. I chose the course because, well, computers... that's where the money is these days. The important thing to note about this course is that you may not actually realise what it involves. There seemed to me to be an awful lot of maths in the first two years, and lots of rot about team management ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great people, good university, good equipment.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not a lot of thought put into the department as a whole

    I chose Birmingham University due to it's promixity to my house plus it's excellent reputation. I chose Computer Science because that's what interests me and they seem to have excellent facilities such as UNIX labs. So first the good points - - Very good UNIX lab - They have an NT lab, although it is very small and often crowded - Some of the lecturers are very nice and very helpful - The library is useful and easy to use - I've met some very nice people on the course - Some modules are really excellent, especially the cognitive science ones - Eike Ritter! Now the bad points - - No real common ... more
