Perfect for Cottage Gardens

Advantages: Perfect cottage garden flowers which will grow anywhere
Disadvantages: Can be a bit untidy looking sometimes

Cranesbill is the common name for the true hardy geraniums which are daintily flowered perennials which lazily flop, sprawl, and spread themselves around in every self respecting cottage garden. These should not be confused with the brightly coloured pelargoniums grown for summer pots and bedding which are more commonly called geraniums although both do belong to the same family. These flowers are known as cranesbills because of their long beak ...
...Hardy geraniums are, generally speaking, very tough plants. They are not affected by pests or diseases and are therefore very easy to grow. Many of the geraniums will self-seed but those that don’t can be easily propagated by division. However, because of their rather untidy nature they are perhaps best suited to the more informal parts of the garden. There are over 100 species of hardy geranium and it is possible to find one suitable for ...

Grow Cranesbill the true Geranium

Advantages: easy to grow , little effort required
Disadvantages: lack scent , can be invasive

...by far the most common cranesbill on sale at typical garden centres and it has lovely magenta flowers from June onwards. G " Johnson's blue " this is another popular one providing plenty of blue flowers as the name suggests in June and July. My final favourite is G "phaeum " this is a variety that tolerates shade better than most and it has lovely dark maroon flowers . This one has the advantage of only reaching up to two feet in height , whilst ...
...For general care and maintanence all that is needed is to trim the plants after the first flush of flowers . I do this with garden shears , simply cut quite ruthlessly and you may be rewarded with a late flush of flowers around September time. It depends on the type of summer we have had , but it is a useful tip to bear in mind. None of the books will tell you to do this but I can confirm it works ! The cranesbills don't have any scent but the flowers ...

Is it a Cranesbill or a Storks bill?

Advantages: easy self seeder
Disadvantages: ?

...out a few cranesbills. Cranesbill is another word for geranium. The Cranesbills I am really thinking of when I say Cranesbill are a wild geranium. The word geranium comes from the Greek word for Crane. There are many cranesbills, doves foot meadow cranesbill wood cranesbill. It is sometimes difficult to decide which species they are. Closely related are the Erodiums the storks bill and heron bill. There are many garden varieties of cranesbills they ...
...30-60 cm high. The Cranesbill has a purpley reddish pink flower some varieties are a blue flower and there is a white flowered one too. The flower has five rounded petals. They flower spring to summer. Cranesbills are pollinated by insects bees love them. Cranesbills are called such because of the shape of their seedpod it is shaped like a birds bill quite long and pointy. When the seeds are ripe the bill pops open and the many seeds are distributed ...

What a gem

Advantages: Reliable, hardy and loats to choose from
Disadvantages: Some can be vigorous

I recently did a course where the tutor was crazy about hardy Geraniums or Cranesbills which I thought was rather strange until she gave me some cuttings and I was hooked. There are loads to choose from and they flower for months on end, indeed the little cutting I was given flowered from May until late September and the flowers covered the plant. They come in several shades of pink, blue, mauve and white and many are semi evergreen. Geraniums ...
...and grow in most soils except waterlogged and in sun or light shade. In my opinion some of the most beautiful ones are; Geranium Renardii which is white with maroon-purple veined petals and grows to about 12 inches, or 30 cm, Johnson's Blue which is deep lavender blue and grows to 12 inches, 30 cm and Ann Folkard which is magenta pink with black veins and centres and grows to 20 inches or 50cm. However there are lots to choose from and new species ...
