Advantages: Long battery, Massive storage, Good size and weight Disadvantages: Little ugly, Fiddly controls
...Overview ~~~~
I’ve owned my Creative Zen Xtra mp3 player for about 2 years now; I received it as a Christmas present, and I should say I was a little disappointed when I first opened the wrapping and found it wasn’t an I-pod, however as I got to use the player I soon realised this was a nifty piece of kit.
This particular model has a 30GB hard drive capable of storing over 1000 hours of music. The battery life of the player is typically 10 - 12 ... ...for some time; however the Creative Zen suffers no such problems, lasting a good 10 hours on average. Further to this, and again unlike I-pods, the re-chargeable lithium battery can be replaced in the Zen.
The player can also be used to store computer files and data, in essence making it like an external hard-drive, I have stored a number of files on the player a couple of times to transfer files to other computers.
The write speed for transferring ...

Advantages: Large hard drive, great sound quality, easy to use. Disadvantages: Big and heavy.
The Creative jukebox Zen Xtra is a portable Mp3 player that can hold up to approximately 16,000 songs. Of course, this all depends upon the size that you purchase. This particular Mp3 player starts from 30GB, then up to 40GB, and finally 60GB. However, before you jump in too quickly, don't be fooled that although the 30GB is half the size of their largest mp3 player, that the 30GB is going to be too small. I bought the 40GB, and never in a million ... ...of battery life).
The Creative Zen Xtra mp3 player doesn't just hold music files, you can store other documents (such as word documents) which can make transfers of such files easy. This Mp3 player was hailed as one of the best when it first came out (over a year ago), and was said to be much better than the iPod. Creative don't do things by halves, and judging by this mp3 player, they build to satisfy their customers, and they certainly aren't ...

Advantages: Cheaper than an iPod, and as good as one. Disadvantages: Quite large and bulky.
...with £170 for a 30GB Creative Zen rather than a 20GB iPod for around £200+.
It was great I thought, an mp3 player with 10GB more storage and £30 less. You're probably now expecting the 'but', however, there isn't one.
The Zen is an excellent piece of technology. Let's break it down then. Firstly, the body. Yes it is large. Without the protective casing, it is actually quite a sleek and slim looking product. The silver buttons are very attractive ... ...extrude out of the body of the mp3 player. The buttons are comfortable to touch and have a satisfying 'click' when pressed, the scroll wheel is quite a challenge initially to control, however within 5 minutes, it is easily mastered. The jack plug, USB and power connectors all on the top look very nice and fit in with the design and are versatile and easy to plug in and plug out. On my player they have had a year's heavy use and they are still in ...

Advantages: Ease of use, removable battery Disadvantages: Can freeze on occasion
...months ago and purchased the Creative Zen Plus 30GB for a price similar to that of 4 or 5GB players about (I cannot remember the price sadly, having something of sieve memory, but I believe it to be in the £150-£200 region. Purchased from Amazon.co.uk, it seems out of stock currently), and can say I've not regretted the decision. For starters: A quick read over the manual and glance at the player and its controls is you need to get to grips with ... ...their MP3 players' batteries, the Creative Zen's is removable, requiring that you never have to send your player away to have the battery replaced, which can be costly; extra batteries on the other hand are well-priced, and also let you listen for longer.
Sound
And last, but certainly not least, is the sound quality. The ability to transfer songs as MP3s, paired with on board sound level and environment controls means that the Zen Plus really is ...

Advantages: Better than the I-Pod Disadvantages: A bit brick-like
...listen to for two days! Creative were very good about the situation and sent me a replacement, but AGAIN I had to go through the rigmarole of sticking songs on there again after it went wrong. This time it was 6000 songs, which believe it or not takes quite a while to do. 6000 seconds if you believe Creative's 1 second a song transfer rate.
Since that, I have had no problems with the player except that it keeps freezing on me so I have to scrabble ... ...to speak!).
If you don't want to conform to the i-pod mania (which I sure don't) and pay over the odds for something that can be so small that you are bound to lose it, especially if you are like me. The sound quality is amazingly good. The scroller can be a bit tricky to use if you have a sweaty thumb (sounds like a disease!). It looks like a brick but that is only with the case on, the player itself is sleek and quite beautiful. If you are a careful ...

Advantages: Great sound quality, holds plenty of files, removeable battery and useful accessories included Disadvantages: Big and bulky, somewhat basic (no video playback, cant display photos etc.)
I've had my Creative Zen Xtra 30gb for over a year and a half now and I have to say, its really good! I've managed to get over 2,900 files onto it (both .mp3 and .wma file types and you can also use it for transferring/backing up data which is very useful if your wanting to use up some of the spare space!) and I have just under 15gb left, so this should last me a long time.
I think one of the best things about this player is the audio quality. Creative ... ...quality is really good! it comes with whats called 'EAX audio' which allow you to use pre-selected settings to enhance the quality of tracks... but even with that switched off, the sound quality is impressive. You get an awful lot for your money with this item, in my opinion. For starters, you get the main unit itself plus you get the mains adapter, a USB cable to connect the unit to your computer, a designer pouch and software which allows you to ...

Advantages: Cheap and plenty of space Disadvantages: Navigation
Recently i've just bought a Creative Zen and i'm very happy with it. After working with and looking at other reviews of similar devices iPod/iRiver etc I opted to go for the Zen. With Creative being "the daddies" in sound related features on PC's I thought that I couldn't go wrong.
After ordering my Zen from Amazon I got a lovely package a few days later (It was in a huge box compared to the size of the Zen itself but i'm not complaining.) In it, ... ...you would expect from a creative product and it allows you to actually use smart volume which changes all your music to play at the same level, so no more turning it down or turning it up if the level it's been recorded at is too low/too high.
The earphones you get with it are excellent (if not a bit ugly) and give you excellent sound, it could of done with a remote control but the way the buttons are laid out on the Zen itself means you can operate ...

...can by updated, in typical Creative fashion. Doing this was a simple operation with the one file easily downloaded and just one button to press on it. You can't go wrong.
The navigation around the firmware is easy and clean, with a choice of displays depending on how your mind likes to organise things. This is most useful. Almost all input into the device is done with one jog switch, it moves up, it moves down, it presses in. After a while setting ... ...tunnel syndrome!
To start up and shut down the device you have to hold in the power button for a few seconds. It's not instant, and this may annoy the impatient people like myself.
There is a button lock option to stop you changing track or pausing your music accidentally.
The device came with a very nice and well fitting case that protects it against knocks and scratches. It also has a clip to attach to your trousers or shirt or something, but ...

...However I did buy this Creative Zen Xtra on capability and it has fully lived up to expectations. I have the 30Gb model and have barely made a dent in it's capacity despite having about 100CDs and the first 5 Harry Potter books on it.
It is easy to transfer music to the player, even a technophobe like me managed it.
I like my music LOUD and the EU volume regulator annoyed me so I went to Creative's American site and, following the detailed instructions, ... ...happy with the supplied headphones.....I must have odd shaped ears as these in-ear type always fall out, so I splashed out on some Sennheiser folding ones which give stunning sound.
The battery life is as good as claimed, about 12 hours which i find means that one battery is enough. Needs recharging via mains electricity and the charging unit is heavier than the MP3 player, so best left at home unless you will be away for a while.
At first the ...

I started my MP3 experience with a 256MB player, one of those small USB pen in sized things that you can buy anywhere, especially on eBay. Why splash out for an iPod when you can have just as good for much less??
The first and only problem I encountered with this mp3 player was the fact that Windows ME would not accept the driver. This wasn't too much of a problem considering I had a new PC with Windows XP on order!
With my new PC up and running, I was soon able do transfer 4GBs worth of music over without any problems. It still seems very empty though !! :-(
This player is just ... ...(if that makes sense), without being heavy. The only snag is with the buttons - people with large fingers like me may find it a bit fiddly. I suppose this is made up for with the nice case that comes with it.
Currently, this is connected to the aux in on the rear of my Kenwood car CD Player, allowing me to listen to endless tracks while I am driving.
This really is the MP3 player to go for, it beats the Thompson Lyra and iPod mini that some of ...

In my opinion, the menu system is a lot more easy to use on the Creative - due to the fact that there is a more logical progression between screens. Secondly, the jog wheel is just as good as the touch wheel, it just takes a bit more practice to get used to.
Thirdly, the Zen Xtra also displays more information about each track than the iPods I have used.
Now, solely the Zen Xtra:

I shopped around for ages before I decieded to get this Mp3 player, and I chose it more for its looks and its memory size than anything else. I did not want to get an Ipod, as everyone else has one, and besides, I think this looks better, and more user friendly.

...huge hassle. However, with the Creative Zen, I could change anything and everything in my pocket.
Another great feature on this MP3 player, apart from the good value for the money, was EAX audio - the ability to play the songs at varied speeds and in different situations - ie at half speed in a concert hall or 1.5 speed in the bathroom. Two years ago I paid £180 for the unit.
However, after the first few months, I started to realise the disadvantages ... ...it.
For starters, it is a rather large machine. Although it has a very large 30 GB hard drive, capable of storing roughly 15,000 WMA or 8,000 MP3, it was a huge machine, and sometimes I would struggle to fit it in some of my jean pockets. Also, now everytime I started up the machine after being on charge, it would freeze, causing an inconvience everytime by having to remove the battery every time to take it off the freeze.
Then, after 6 months, ...
