A Time-Traveller in Jacobite Scotland

AdvantagesBrilliantly written, well-researched, realistic, thought-provoking, exciting, moving, light humour to relieve the tension

DisadvantagesViolent in places, difficult to put down!

"This novel begins just outside Inverness in 1946. Clare and Frank were married shortly before the war, then parted for the duration; Clare worked as a nurse. Now they are back together again and taking a short holiday. Frank is an intellectual type who is fascinated by Scottish history and researching his family tree; Clare (who narrates the entire book) loves him and enjoys his company but finds him amusingly tedious when he starts lecturing on his ..." Claire crossed the centuries.

AdvantagesImprobable but highly believable, well written, absorbing story line.

DisadvantagesNone.

"What is this? The first in a set of, so far five books with another being published at the end of September 2005. A historical novel with a twist. The copy I have is a rather dog-eared paperback. Well read I guess you would call it. This is a fantasy of time travel but the historical facts are well researched and fairly authentic. There are some things that Diana has changed to suit her story and she has explained this at the back of the book. ..." Read review

Frustrating and silly, but it gets you there in the end

AdvantagesManages to summon up the occasional flash of brilliance

DisadvantagesSilly, unbelievable, sadomascochistic, and needlessly violent. The Loch Ness Monster.

"...and one of them is Cross Stitch. Although not terribly well known here in the UK, the Outlander series is hugely popular with Americans; more specifically with American women; more specifically still with American women aged from 30 to 60. And frankly it's easy to see why. The romantic images of the hills and glens of 18th century Scotland, the brave Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and the feisty heroine Claire Randall might as well have been scientifically ..." A STITCH IN TIME...CAN GET YOU A SECOND HUSBAND...

Advantages A WONDERFUL READ THAT WILL KEEP YOU ON YOUR TOES TILL THE END

Disadvantages CAN'T BE READ IN ONE SITTING, AND IF YOU DON'T BUY IT 2ND HAND WILL COST YOU £8!!!

"Cross Stitch Diana Gabaldon There is nothing I like more than a good time travel novel. Except maybe a time travel novel that has great swathes of romance throughout it. I'm one of those people who can easily suspend my belief to follow a character through "time portals" into the world as it was a hundred years ago, without getting too much involved with cause and effect - you know, the whole butterfly effect thing where tampering even the tiniest ..." The Best Book I Have Ever Read

Advantageswonderful, absorbing, the most inspiring novel, best book I've ever read, romantic, historical, perfect !

DisadvantagesI want more !!!

"I borrowed Cross Stitch from the library, after a friend recommended it. I have since read three of Diana Gabaldon's wonderful novels and can truthfully say she is my favourite author. Cross Stitch is about a woman called Claire, who lives with her husband, Frank in 1960s Scotland. She discovers a stone circle one day and is transported through it, arriving in a Scotland some two hundred years ago. Her adventures lead her to meet Jamie Fraser - ..." Read review

Highly Highly Highly recommended

AdvantagesOne of the best books this avid reader has read

DisadvantagesNONE whatsoever

"I chanced upon Diana Gabaldon when I picked up the third book in the series at a charity stall. The book is so well written that I didn't at first realise it was part of a series(and well into the series at that!). This book entranced me so that I found myself sitting up all night to read - something I haven't done in well over 10 years!! As soon as I realised that there was a 'first' book, I went out and bought it without a second thought(not something ..." Read review

The best book I've ever read !!

Advantageswonderful characters, very readable

Disadvantagesits size may look daunting, but don't be put off !!

"The book 'Cross Stitch' (Outlander = US title) is a novel by Diana Gabaldon. It is the first of currently four novels by her, following a woman called Claire & a man called Jamie. It is essentially an historical romance, but the twist is that Claire is from modern day Britain & Jamie is a Scottish Highlander from the past ! It is the best novel I have ever read - a large book, but one that somehow doesn't seem big enough, as you miss the characters ..." Read review

a stitch in time

AdvantagesSome clever dialogue between the main characters.

DisadvantagesThe hero beats and rapes the heorine.

"Claire Randall was enjoying a second honeymoon in Scotland with her husband in 1946 when she accidentally travels back in time. In 1743, she meets Jamie Fraser and a host of other characters. Claire's position is precarious because of her relative unfamiliarity with the time and customs and because she is perceived as a threat because of her English accent. Despite these problems, Claire establishes herself as a nurse, using her war nursing experience. ..." Read review

Un-put-down-able!

Advantagesbrilliant characterisation, excellent plot line

Disadvantagesnone

"This has to be one of my favourite ever novels. Although the story of a woman stumbling upon a stone circle and then travelling 200 hundred years back in time, into the Jacobite period, might seem a little far fetched, Diana Gabaldon writes so well that you really believe it might be possible! Even if you are not a history fan I think this novel would appeal as the characterisation is so good - the red-haired Jamie Fraser appeals to women everywhere! ..." Read review

"...suits it much better than Cross Stitch. This book and those that follow it have spawned a large band of devotees across the world – all desperately waiting for the final two books to conclude the series. Check out some of the web pages including www.lallybroch.com if you need more convincing to give this book a go. I've already read it 4 times! ..." Read review

I will never finish such a thick book.

AdvantagesGood read and gets better with every page (thank god it is a long book.)

DisadvantagesSome unbelievable parts like time travelling.

"...is what I thought about Cross Stitch before I read it. But then I read all 4 of them in just 1 months. Since now I read the first one three times and I even spent 20 months working in Scotland and tour round it to see all the places and meet history (e.g. in Culloden). The story is really great but I have to admit that I cannot imagine that all the travelling in 18th century Scotland was so easy that no real problems where mentioned. There are real ..." Read review

Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon

AdvantagesReasonably priced, fantastic read.

DisadvantagesYou just can not put the book down

"I was recommended this book by a friend at work, but it took me to see about 4 other colleagues reading it before going to purchase it. This book, along with the others in the series which I am now on the fourth, are so vividly written you can almost imagine being in the book alongside Jamie and Claire, and thier family, either side of the timeline. It has been so well written that it has helped to improve my history, although some is slightly out ..." Read review

"Cross Stitch is one of the most captivating books that I have ever read. It is rare that one can become so involved with characters that they almost become your friends. Throughout the story I felt the love, the fear and the pain experienced by both Jamie and Clare.
