Violent in places, difficult to put down!

This novel begins just outside Inverness in 1946. Clare and Frank were married shortly before the war, then parted for the duration; Clare worked as a nurse. Now they are back together again and taking a short holiday. Frank is an intellectual type who is fascinated by Scottish history and...

Lately I've been flinging so much shit at the Outlander series that I'm beginning to feel like an IRA prisoner staging a dirty protest. But rest assured, there's more to me than bile-filled hate speeches. There are things about this series that I kind of like, and one of them is Cross Stitch...

None.

What is this? The first in a set of, so far five books with another being published at the end of September 2005. A historical novel with a twist. The copy I have is a rather dog-eared paperback. Well read I guess you would call it. This is a fantasy of time travel but the historical facts are...

Cross Stitch Diana Gabaldon There is nothing I like more than a good time travel novel. Except maybe a time travel novel that has great swathes of romance throughout it. I'm one of those people who can easily suspend my belief to follow a character through "time portals" into the world as it was...

I want more !!!

I borrowed Cross Stitch from the library, after a friend recommended it. I have since read three of Diana Gabaldon's wonderful novels and can truthfully say she is my favourite author. Cross Stitch is about a woman called Claire, who lives with her husband, Frank in 1960s Scotland. She discovers...

One of the best books this avid reader has read

NONE whatsoever

I chanced upon Diana Gabaldon when I picked up the third book in the series at a charity stall. The book is so well written that I didn't at first realise it was part of a series(and well into the series at that!). This book entranced me so that I found myself sitting up all night to read...

“Un-put-down-able!”

brilliant characterisation, excellent plot line

none

This has to be one of my favourite ever novels. Although the story of a woman stumbling upon a stone circle and then travelling 200 hundred years back in time, into the Jacobite period, might seem a little far fetched, Diana Gabaldon writes so well that you really believe it might be possible...

wonderful characters, very readable

its size may look daunting, but don't be put off !...

The book 'Cross Stitch' (Outlander = US title) is a novel by Diana Gabaldon. It is the first of currently four novels by her, following a woman called Claire & a man called Jamie. It is essentially an historical romance, but the twist is that Claire is from modern day Britain & Jamie is a...

“Truly addictive reading!”

published 17/07/2000

If you are not generally interested in romance or historical fiction – please don’t be put off by the name or genre – this book really deserves a category of its own and is the most addictive book I have ever read. Love, adventure, war, and a bit of time travel thrown in for good measure – only...

Satisfactory

“a stitch in time”

published 06/11/2009

Some clever dialogue between the main characters.

The hero beats and rapes the heorine.

Claire Randall was enjoying a second honeymoon in Scotland with her husband in 1946 when she accidentally travels back in time. In 1743, she meets Jamie Fraser and a host of other characters. Claire's position is precarious because of her relative unfamiliarity with the time and customs and...

...as you'll be unavailable to the outside world as soon as you pick up this book. I started reading 'Cross Stitch' when my mother gave it to me when I was bored last summer. My initial reaction was, 'yuck a romance novel, how typically middle-aged'. I was wrong. It is the beautifully written...

Some unbelievable parts like time travelling.

That is what I thought about Cross Stitch before I read it. But then I read all 4 of them in just 1 months. Since now I read the first one three times and I even spent 20 months working in Scotland and tour round it to see all the places and meet history (e.g. in Culloden). The story is really...

Cross Stitch is one of the most captivating books that I have ever read. It is rare that one can become so involved with characters that they almost become your friends. Throughout the story I felt the love, the fear and the pain experienced by both Jamie and Clare. It is a book that I would...

I absolutely loved this book and all the others in the series. Really gripping and great plot! It might be slightly predictable in places but it is a great way to learn a little history while getting immersed in a great story. I first picked it up because my sister in law recommended it to me.
