Advantages Advantages Fairly low cost, fixed rate dealing, fast, easy to navigate site.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Limit orders expire after one attempt to trade.

Although I have been investing for many years, I have avoided using online share dealing services until recently because using the telephone is much more convenient. You do not have the hassle of logging onto the Internet, and you don't have to find a PC in the middle of nowhere with Internet access. The factor that persuaded me to change my views and have a go was the introduction of a low cost SIPP from DLJ Direct. (A SIPP is a personal pension that allows you to trade individual shares rather than invest in a fund). My first impression of the site was that it was easy to navigate, and all I ... more

Advantages Advantages reliable, fast and effective

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slightly expensive and complex setup

I started dealing with DLJ after halifax share express let me down time and time again. I have to say they are very good and although I don't deal that often they haven't let me down. You are able to trade in more stocks than some brokers, include AIM market and I believe they are seriously considering adding a number of foreign markets. The dealing price is fair being within £5 of every one else - Not that much considering trades of just £1000 - £2000. The service is fast and reliable, with a big traditional firm backing up the internet business. I have to admit that i don't like the need to ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick and have good customer support

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none really

I looked into several online brokers and came to the conclusion that DJL were one of the more professional outfits. The web site is quick and has good resources for the user and the company has an exellent (and free) telephone service. Any queries or questions I've had either via email or telephone have been sorted out very quickly. They offer good rates, and a real-time service. You can also trade in the US markets via the site if you apply to do so. They also offer a very good interest rate on any cash that is in your DLJ account - better than most banks etc... Highly recomended. ... more

Advantages Advantages Trades are quickly shown on your screen and portfolios updated. I have not had any errors apparent in any transactions.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Portfolio prices are from the previous day. It is not possible to dictate a market price for buying or selling.

I have been trading with DLJ Direct for a year now and I would not change to another broker even if they were cheaper. I started by sending a cheque to be held in my account - and earning interest. Buying shares is simplicity itself and your account and portfolio are updated within minutes. One drawback is not being able to place an order to buy or sell at a preferred price. A price is quoted and held for 30 seconds after which it has to be "refreshed". Another disadvantage is that it is not possible to leave an order to trade while the market is closed as the price is at the whim of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Concise, easy to use, freephone customer service, UK and US trading

Disadvantages Disadvantages Money transfers take long, site has some niggles, transactions costs masked/not obvious, lots of snail mail coming all the time

I have been using DLJ for the past few months and find it works well for what I use it for (small scale, no day trading). The site is well laid out, except for a few niggles, the freephone service is excellent when you need to use it and I like the way i can trade both US and UK (though this does require two setup procedures - more as a consequence of differing regulatory issues on the two sides of the Atlantic I believe) The site allows you to view your actual portfolio holdings using real-time of delayed quotes. Real time quotes usage debits a single credit from your quote bank for each real ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to logon using any computer

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nominee account only

DLJ Direct are an online Stockbroker enabling members to buy and sell UK shares via the internet. Portfolios are held in a nominee account (they keep your share certificates) and shares can be held in a tax free self select ISA account. I have been using DLJDirect for about 6 months now and find the website and logon process very straightforward. I previously used Barclays Stockbrokers but found the use of digital certificates complicated when away from my normal computer. Logging on is much simpler with DLJ direct. DLJ Direct also have excellent research facilities, which is provided free and ... more

Advantages Advantages reliable service, always able too place an order, nominee

Disadvantages Disadvantages More expensive than the competition, No level2 orders, not able too short etc

I began using DLJ-direct back in 1999. They offered me a month of commision free trading. This was great, almost like heaven, and I was able too turn a couple of thousand into several thousand in no time. However, after a while of getting used too the minimum commision of £14.95 .. more if its about £1500+ your dealing with. Your trades started too look expensive when you compare them too the many brokers that now offer £5-£10 dealing rates.. Since 1999 Dlj-direct's service has been very good and they offer a good rate of interest on deposits. However since 1999 the only noticable feature they ... more

    Advantages Advantages ease of use

Disadvantages Disadvantages no limit order facility

I began dealing with DLJ about one year ago, after being enticed by the special offer of an initial commission free period. I was my first experience of online dealing. The commission free period allowed short term trading even with small ammounts of capital. I had great fun and made some money. The web site was very easy to navigate but lacked one important feature. They do not provide a facility to place a limit order. This could prove costily if you placed an order out of hours, as the deal would be processed first thing on the following day without price restriction. Early morning bid/ask ... more

Advantages Advantages good reliable service, interest on credit balances, good customer service

Disadvantages Disadvantages not the cheapest, no dealing in European markets

I opened an account with DLJ Direct and was very impressed with there service. There commission charges are about the same as some other online stockbrokers, but there service is excellent. It is not the cheapest service, TD Waterhouse is cheaper (Starts from £9.95) while DLJ is £14.95. You can open an account on the internet from there website www.dljdirect.co.uk, and they send you a form to sign, and that is it. You can deposit funds with them via cheque or via debit card. This is the bit I like, as it is much quicker than cheque. You can also do this on-line so it is very easy to do. You ... more

    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Reasonable commission, easy to use, fast

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sale proceeds take a while, excessive paperwork

After trying out demos of other online brokers, I decided DLJ Direct was the right one for me due to the simplicity of the system, and the fact that they offer real time dealing (you're given a price and have 60 seconds to confirm that you want to make a trade at that price.) The charges are reasonable - at a minimum £15 per trade, they're not the cheapest, but not high enough that they make too much difference. The site itself is easy to navigate, and making a trade is very straighforward, as is accessing the other functions, such as the portfolio tool (where, unfortunately, prices are only ... more
