Advantages: Great value for money Disadvantages: Lost signal now and again
...option.
I bought my Daewoo freeview box in Tesco's for £49.95 about a year and a half ago now and have been very happy with my purchase. The box was incredibly easy to set up, via connection through a scart cable. Within ten minutes of opening the packaging my freeview box was up and running after following the on-screen instructions.
The selection of channels on the freeview service is enough for my needs. Amongst others you get BBC3 & 4, ITV2 ... ...on the freeview service the Daewoo box will inform you and tell you to rescan which again is just a case of following the on-screen instructions.
A small problem with the Daewoo freeview box is that it occasionaly loses the signal and crashes for about 60 seconds or so. This can be fixed manually at the time simply by turning the box off and back on again. Also the box is quite cheap looking but can be set up to be totally out of view.
Overall ...

Advantages: Cheap 0ne off payment, Good Quality, Relaible, Easy to Use, Lots of Channels Disadvantages: non
I have had my Daewoo box for 4 or 5 years now, and think its the bee's knees, its so good we have now bought a second! One for the kitchen and one for the lounge!
The box cost us a one off £49.50, with no other payments at all.
Set up
It is simple and easy to set up, even my technologically impaired family managed to have it fully working in 15 minutes, using the user friendly "Quick Start Guide" and on screen instructions, it connects to the ... ...aerial and a power cable, so there aren't hundreds of wires to get confused by.
Usability Once set up it is easy to use with a clear remote control, its simple to either use the navigation buttons and menu's to view the on screen guide (which provides information about the programs) and selecting the channel you want, or to just type in the desired channel, small as it seems its very nice for "1" to be BBC1 etc. Whilst watching a particular channel ...

Advantages: Value for money, easy to use and good picture quality. Disadvantages: Sometimes hangs when signal interrupted and cheap looking.
I bought this Daewoo freeview box in Richer Sounds for £39.95 and this being my first venture into freeview. At that price, I initially planned to "test the water" with it to ensure that freeview was all it was cracked up to be and that I got decent reception.
I have had it for 3 months now and I must say I am very happy with it and consider it money VERY well spent. My cousin has got the same model and his area is supposed to be a weak signal area, ... ...very easy and just had to follow the on screen instructions. Changing of channels is relatively swift and other commands responds instantly from the remote. A great feature it has got is the RF output, so if your TV does not have a scart socket, it can be connected via the aerial socket and tuned in.
The drawbacks are minor: cheap looking plastic case, only one scart socket and it sometimes crashes/hangs/locks up when the signal has been interupted ...

Advantages: No monthly fee, 30+ extra channels, AND radio station Disadvantages: Not as many channels as sky, non-upgradable to topup TV
My mum, my sister and I were in tescoes and we saw this on the shelf for £49.95. We bought it because we had heard about freeview, and so we thought it would be nice to have.
We were very pleased - we were a bit worried that we wouldnt be able to get it in our area, but we could (you can go to www.freeview.co.uk to check with oyur postcode if you can get it).
And we were really pleased! We now have several more channels including The Hits and TMF ... ...my mum likes, Sky Travel which often has the funny old baywatch episodes!, and loads of other cool stuff.
So, we bought it and it was really easy to use and set up. We simply plugged in the scart plug into the TV and the other plug into the areal, and within a couple of minutes it had automatically tuned and set itself up.
Another good thing I like about the box is that the TV guide. You can easily view what is on now on each channel and next, ...

Advantages: One off payment for extra channels Disadvantages: problems with signal sometimes
I used to have cable television but found that I hardly watched half the channels we had so I sent it back and invested £50 for a Freeview box, it is a one off payment no more to pay at all, it was easy to set up via a scart cable. If your TV doesn't have a scart socket don't worry it can be connected via your aerial socket by the RF output and then tuned in to a spare channel on your TV.
It does work better with an outside aerial but if you don't ... ...but only the signal isn't as good as it could be with an outside aeriel. There are on screen instructions which guide you through setting up your box. Along with the normal BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and 5 there are also the sister channels to them that is BBC3&4, ITV2&3, E4, News Channels, Music Channels, Children's Channels basically it was like the basic package I was being offered from my cable company. Just like any other box you can check ...
