...had a look in a Daewoo garage and saw the 3 door Lanos 1.4S for £7999, which I believed was out of my price range, however on discussion with a showroom assistant (“they don’t have salesmen”), I was offered the Lanos at a price I thought I could afford, with a special offer of 1 years free insurance and cut price purchase scheme. Delivery was scheduled on the day after the MOT expired on the Sunny, but if they could not bring this ... ...car for this period. I had just bought six months road tax for the Sunny, and was told that as the car would not have a MOT, then I would be allowed to reclaim the outstanding road tax. I was also given a reasonable part exchange price for the Sunny. The car also came with 1 years road tax, 3 years warranty, 3 years servicing and 3 years total AA cover, this is also a big saving on my yearly car expense outlay.

We were taken for a test drive in the Matiz, and once we started to look at the prices of the Lanos, we asked to test drive it too. It only took us 24 hours to make up our minds to buy one, and we went back and placed our order the next day.

I called the Daewoo customer services line, who in turn contacted the AA who arrived at my door in 20 minutes (wow!) and fixed the problem temporarily in 10 minutes. I bought my Lanos in march 1998. She never fails to start in the morning and thats great. But ask me would I have another when this has had it's lot then the answer would have to be a resounding NO!
Within the first 12 months I have had replaced, 1 dashboard-cracked,2 badges-stolen, 2 registration plates-fell off on a very hot day because the glue melted, 2 radios-faulty,2 speakers-faulty, 1 hatch lock-faulty,1 window winder-fell off. I could go ...
...and I was informed by Daewoo that this was driver abuse (after a WEEK?!!)The syteering pulls to the left and always has but my local Daewoo agent has no facilities to check this, a check requires a 130 mile round trip! I bought my Daewoo Lanos in April 2003 after finally trading in my unreliable and frankly dying Peugeot 205.
I was looking for a car that would not let me down - would start every morning, not overheat in traffic jams and not cover me with water from leaky windows and sunroof. (Ah, such fond memories of my old Peugeot!)
I was lucky enough to find a V Reg Lanos 1.4 for £3000 (with part-exchange for my old car). I was amazed that I could afford such ... ...one with so many safety features and extras (ABS brakes, double airbags, power steering).
The car is not the most stylish of vehicles, but it is not as boxy as some of the cars on the road although it does have a huge bonnet which makes it look a little Pinochio-like.
After nearly eight months of owning this car, I have had no problems with it. The only costs I have had have been a new tyre and a standard service which found no problems whatsoever.

Yeah, the daewoo Lanos is a great small car....
....or so you think.
You see these cars aren't actually that small. I've had mine since 1999 and it is still serving me well. I am a musician, and a percussionist at that, so I have racked up about 50,000 to and from gigs in the last 3 years. However, I have never had to utilise the tow bracket on my daewoo. Why? Because everything fits in just fine. Admittedly things would be a little more difficult ... ...but they are spacious cars.
Just for an extreme example, I have had My Drum Kit (Bass drum, snare, 2 toms, cymbals and hardware box), 2 tour timps, a xylophone, a vibraphone and a glock in my daewoo, AT THE SAME TIME!. OK so there was not an inch of space left but it all went in and got me to the gig safely. These cars aren't being made new any more but if you want a cheap and reliable 2nd hand car then go for a Lanos. I recon you could pick one ...

...If you are unfamiliar with Daewoo don't be shy. I was to start with but took the plunge 3 years ago with an ESPERO. With daewoo cars you do save money up front and get very good specs which does make them value for money. However, do not expect a good trade in a year or two later. For this reason only buy if you intend to hold on to for 3-5 years when you can benefit from a very good warranty deal. I have found the cars reasonably reliable and service ...

the cars handling is unbelievable. it cant go round corners at speed it under steers. iv had everything fall off the radio doesn't work my heating gets stuck on full heat it doesn't blow air by the windscreen so it fogs up on a regular basis. the paint chips far too easily. the rear window is pretty high so it makes it difficult to park. the gear ratio is very surprising, the car from stationary to first into second takes less than two seconds which ...

...the only was ull get a daewoo to go fast is to drop it off a cliff. This car is very very slow. but other than that.. its a nice car ... clutch and throtle is a bit fidly , so its not the easiest of cars to drive ...

Well I replaced my old escort in 2003 for my current Daewo Lanos 1.4. She is a more reliable car and always starts in the morning - even in the arctic wintery conditions. Alas the only problem is when we have a whiff of ice the driver door wont open. I have to open the passenger side and flick the central locking myself manually. But I reckon this is a small price to pay for a relatively cheap comfortable car with all those added extra's. i've travelled ...
