Damaged - forever?

Advantages: Keeps you reading, very entertaining, very informative
Disadvantages: Leaves you wishing there was something you could do about abusers in the world today

I picked this book up from the shelves at Tesco, as the books were on offer and i love to read true stories. I guess the cover stood out as it is a simple cover design that makes the title of the story jump out at you. I popped it in my basket and took it home. I started reading this book one night and read a few chapters. I knew i was going to enjoy it as it was nicely written, easy to read, and already had me wanting to know more. This book is ...
...carer. She and her two children Adrian and Paula live in a house with another girl Lucy who Cathy fostered and took into their family. Cathy is divorced so there is no father in the house. She is very qualified at what she does and hasn't fostered for a a few weeks as she likes to take breaks inbetween each child to give herself chance to sort herself out. Cathy gets called to a meeting one day. The meeting is called because there is a 7 yr old child, ...

Damaged-Forever or not?

Advantages: Interesting and informative
Disadvantages: That things like this happens in this world

If like me you love to read True stories then this is the book for you. The main thing that attracted me tothis book was the front cover, Plain simple and contains a picture of a young girl. From reading the first chapter I had to make mor time to read it as I knew this was going to be a good read. This book is about a divorced woman, Cathy Glass who is a carer. She and her two children Adrian and Paula live in a house with a girl named Lucy who ...
...fostered for a few weeks. One day Cathy is called to a meeting, this is because a 7 yr old child, named Jodie needs a home, either with a foster carer or in a residential unit. She has been moved round a lot and hasn't spent very long at all with each foster family. Cathy is confused as well as interested to know why she doesn't stay at the foster carer's home for long. Cathy is told the child has behavioural and other problems due to the fact that ...

Hurrah for Foster Carers

Advantages: Brilliant Book
Disadvantages: If you don't like these type of stories I advise not to read it.

I had run out of books to read, and fancied a change, as I always pick up the books that write of neglect, child abuse etc, etc, etc. I really don't know what drew me to this book, maybe it was the cover, or the price, but as soon as I saw it I bought it. I got the kids into bed and picked it up to read a couple of chapters, I read 15 that night, thats 163 pages, I just needed to know more. Heres my review:- Cathy Glass has been a foster carer ...
...Adrian and Paula are hers and Lucy a foster child. This is her account of an eight year old girl called Jodie. Jodie had had five carers before she entered Cathy's family, life, heart and mind. She had been on the at risk register since birth, but had ony been admitted into care 4 months previous after starting a house fire, how, she set fire to the family dog. With her current carers, she threw terrible tantrums, was aggresive and destructive, ...

Advantages: Truly remarkable and utter love and compassion from this author
Disadvantages: Shocking and upsetting - utterly heartrending

A friend leant me this book and I must admit I wasn't sure whether it would be that good. I have read a lot of childhood memoirs starting off with A Boy callede It and found that a lot of them are very alike, a bit "woe is me". Yes I know they have all had a bad childhood, but I stopped reading them after a a while because they were all very similar. I must admit I was amazed by this book. The book is written by Cathy Glass who is a Foster Carer. ...
...violent, aggressive, and has already been through numerous foster families when her last hope is Cathy Glass. Cathy is "pushed" into taking on Jodie as a last resort after she has been rehomed many times. If Cathy wouldn't take her on then she would be forced into a Children's Home. Cathy decides to give Jodie a chance, and what a time she has. The patience shown by Cathy in the face of such adversity is truly aspiring. Jodie frequently soils herself, ...

Advantages: Doesn't hide anything, very true and heart felt
Disadvantages: Could be too much for the younger readers

Well i was told about this book and was also told that it was quite graphic, which is definately true. Nevertheless an amazing book. I am in my teens and would only recommend it for other teenagers if they are mature enough to handle such a tragic story. The book is about a foster carer who decides to take on what she is told could be an extremely hard case. A little 8 year old girl who has had around 4 carers in as many months, has challenging ...
...no child should, along with other things such as smearing feaces across herself and self harming, can Cathy help her change and lead the life she always should have? I have to say that by page 100 i was already finding it hard tp carry on as i couldn't believe what i was reading, and that this was actually true and so many children are actually put through this. A truly amazing story that shows what foster carers are put through sometimes and feel ...

Advantages: You wont be able to put this book down once you start reading it.
Disadvantages: Has got loads of sad parts.

Ive got to say, I bought this book a couple of weeks ago because I wanted it to take on holiday but a couple of days before we went I just wanted to read a couple of pages to get the jist of the book. Well big mistake........I could not put it down, I read the whole book in 2 nights, it is just one of those books where you have to know what is going to happen next. If you are into true stories then you will love this book, but if you get upset easily ...
...this book are quite sad and I suppose could be quite distressing to some people. The Book is based on a young girl called Jodie who has not had a very good start to life and needs some real love and care. The social services want to find her a home that she will be able to stay in for a long time as she has been moved around a hell of a lot. Jodie has behavoral problems due to what she has been through, so foster carers cant really handle her behavour. ...

Damaged by Cathy Glass - Heartbreaking

Advantages: Gives a true insight into the damage emotional and physical child abuse causes
Disadvantages: The truth hurts and this book can be upsetting at parts.

Well I originally had this bought for me as a present from my husband out of the blue as he knows I like to read "those kind of books". I was taken in by the beautiful looking little girl on the front and started reading it straight away. I could not help but become engrossed in the story straight away, the first conversation that takes place in the book gives an insight into the termoil and upset that would be brought to Cathy's family and left ...
...next. The book itself is written beautifully, the story holds no punches and is honest and admirable to the last. It shows that the society we live in has a long way to go in protecting the most vunerable children in our "developed" country. I will not go into detail about the opinions this book provokes or the story detail but I will say that I have read a lot of books and this one is at the top of my "Best Reads". However if you do not want an ...

Advantages: Insight into what some foster carers have to endure
Disadvantages: Sad story made even more moving because it is true

This book had me gripped from the start. It is a true story about a foster carer called Cathy Glass and her experience with a very troubled 8 year old girl named Jodie. Cathy has been a foster carer for over 20 years and looked after more than 50 children. What struck me about this book was the sheer frankness of Cathy. It is a heartwrenching story that goes into quite a lot of detail. Jodie had been through numerous carers before she was taken ...
...aware in a crisis meeting that Jodie would be taken into a residential care home which would of meant she didn't get the one-on-one care that she so badly needed. The antics Jodie gets up to are disturbing to say the least, from wiping her own excrement on herself to cutting her own wrists, extreme aggression and sexual behaviour. Multiple identity behaviour and night terrors. This is due to the fact her parents were involved in a paedophile ring ...

Quick review of Damaged - Cathy Glass

I borrowed this book from a friend & could not put it down. It is truly heartbreaking but compelling. A true story of abuse & how a foster family tried to break through the barriers & shocking behaviour of a child locked in a world born out of violence. This book is easy to read & I became fixated with each page, desperate to know how this poor child coped with such trauma & whether she survived her nightmare. This is a must buy for readers of true life stories, I read the book in a week! ...

Damaged Cathy Glass £3.50

Advantages: Excellent true honest account.
Disadvantages: You will not be able to put this book down

God where do i start ... I always have a problem with saying these type of books are 'good' it certainly is not the correct word for this book but heart wrenching is. I bought this book on saturday and by 12.30 the next day i had finished it, It truly is that gripping. I was completely inconsolable at the very end (you will have to read it to understand). An insight into the lives foster carers lead and how demanding it really is. An honest account ...
...her.Jodie is only the tip of the iceberg, seriously though this book lets you know that in every story you read about in the paper there is a thousand more unreported on. It makes you realise quickly how sexual abuse does not only affect a person then but forever. Credit to Cathy Glass (a Pseudonym) thank you for telling me Jodies story. I will never forget this book. ...

Damaged by Cathy Glass - truly amazing!!

Advantages: Well written, you felt you knew them all a little better when finished
Disadvantages: None

...(Cathy Glass) with an extremely damaged young girl that came into her care was truly harrowing. I was in tears after the first few chapters as the story unfolded, the mental damage that had been done to this young child was portrayed perfectly through the excellent writing of this book. Life is really put into perspective when you read about the awful things that this young girl had been subjected to from a young age. Cathy and her family had some ...

Advantages: Short book, lots of story!
Disadvantages: Can't think of any..

This is probably one of my favourite books, usually it takes me a long time to get through any legnth book as I like to just do a few pages in the evening. However I read this book within a day or two! I could not find myself to put it down, it's such a sad & touching book, and the fact that it was true I could not simply believe what I was reading. I only finished the book yesterday and I am already looking to buy another by Cathy Glass, her writing ...
...very emotional book, I have never cried or found myself getting so attatched to the characters and the story! However I found this book so engrosing. I definately recommend this book, not just because of the writing by Cathy Glass, but I guarantee you'll be touched by the end of it! Mecia Holden. ...

Damaged by Cathy Glass

Advantages: Realising the problems foster carers endure.
Disadvantages: The sickening reality of abuse.

Damaged by Cathy Glass had me gripped from the moment i started reading it. The book is about an 8yr old foster child named Jodie who is extremely disturbed. The extent of her problem does not surface until she is put in the care of Cathy Glass (author of the book), a foster carer with over 20yrs experience. Cathy's was the 5th / 6th placement for Jodie in the space of 4 months. After gaining the trust of Jodie, Cathy discovers the truth of the ...
...child suffered at the hands of her parents and many others comes to light. What i found horrifying is how the previous foster carers and social services hadn't noticed any signs of the abuse. Most disturbing still is that the book is based on a true story. ...

DAMAGED - a tough case

Advantages: Easy reading, gripping
Disadvantages: Graphic

I have always enjoyed reading true stories, as i can really get a picture on what life is really like for some people. When i found "Damaged", i couldn't have asked for a more gripping book. From the moment i started reading it, i constantly wanted to find out what was going to happen next! Even though you might think a story about neglect and sexual abuse might be somewhat disturbing, this is not the case. It gives you a true insight to what some ...
...workers and foster carers have to work to help the foster children. As every case of neglect and abuse is so individual, you will not be able to predict what is going to happen, which makes it so hard to put down! I really recommend this book to all ages! ...
