Advantages Advantages Amazing environments, gripping and scary narrative, engrossing universe.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No multiplayer.

The game takes place in the year 2508 A.D. The USG Ishimura (interesting factoid is that this is a Japanese surname which translates literally to "Stone Village") is a famous "Planet Cracker" class mining starship capable of lifting enormous sections of a planets crust miles out into space to allow ground crews to reach deep below the surface. The Concordance Extraction Corporation (a gigantic mining conglomerate) or C.E.C for short receives a distress signal from the Ishimura during a mining operation on the distant planet Aegis VII. The CEC dispatches another ship to investigate, the USG ... more

    Advantages Advantages Creepy graphics

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Repetitive enviroments

I'm starting to think that video games really do promote violence. Looking at my PS3 collection I see titles were the player takes the role of characters who are just asking for trouble. In Metal Gear Solid 4 you're a solider, in Soul Calibur 4 you're a sword fighter and Assassin's Creed has you playing as a door to door salesman. Erm I mean an assassin. Well enough is enough, time to expand my horizons and look for something a little different. Alas I was unable to find any door to door salesmen simulators so I opted to purchase Dead Space instead. The game's main character, Isaac Clarke, is ... more

Advantages Advantages Well designed charcters, excellent atmosphere, original weaponry

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes music is needed, very confusing level structure in rare instacnes

Dead Space is similar to the recent Hollywood western remakes in that it uses a very old-school storyline and plot devices, but spices it up with better visuals, sound and an overall modernizes the format. Dead Space is a mix of Resident Evil combat, classic disgusting flesh-mountain atrocities a la' Silent Hill or The Thing and the time honoured tradition of being stuck in space while aliens want to rip your face open. -STORY- The story involves a small team being stranded on a mining starship, under attack from infected humans called 'Necromorphs'. Most of the game involves travelling around ... more

Advantages Advantages Original title for the survival horror genre

Disadvantages Disadvantages scares seem a bit cheap, Sci Fi setting not for everyone

When Dead Space arrived in 2008. it was nice to see something new in the survival horror genre that didn't involve a T-virus and a shotgun, and, with a second installment and animated film the Dead Space franchise looks set to last long into the future... The dark bloody future. Set in 2508 you are Isaac Clarke (i'm refusing to mention the Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke reference.) an engineer who, as part of a maintenance team sent to repair the USG Ishimura, essentially a grey red dwarf (it looks scarily like red dwarf believe me), the Ishimura is a planet cracker, a ship that's part of a ... more

Advantages Advantages atmospheric - good replayability

    Disadvantages Disadvantages single player only

The only negative to this game is that there is no multiplayer. Everything else is nicely polished, a deeply atmoshperic game that almost immedietly throws you into the thick of it, in a mix of genres it appears to take aspects from various horror games and movies and throw them altogether, which may sound cheesy, but infact works very well. Ultimately, the most fun aspect of the game is the variety of the weapons, having the bility and the need to cut of the limbs of the enemy in order to kill them is a unique style and works very well. Especially given how some of the monsters function ... more

Advantages Advantages excellent atmosphere, graphics, sound and playability

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No Multiplayer,

I purchased this a few months after release. I had read good reviews of the game, but it was not a priority play due to games such as Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Little Big Planet being released at the same time. I have been very surprised at the quality of the game, the atmosphere is fantastic and uses many influences such as films like Alien and Event Horizon, and games such as resident evil and doom3. The graphics are good and range of weapons fairly unique for this type of game, with the aim being to dismember the enemy not just to kill. The sounds are also particularily eerie. A special mention ... more
