Advantages: Peace of mind, can last for three years Disadvantages: Expensive, get out clauses
Buy a new car & you automatically get a generous warranty with it, usually for a minimum of three years. That is three years peace of mind where apart from a handful of items (wiper blades, bulbs, brake pads, adjustments etc) everything is generally covered should something go wrong. Buy a used car within that warranty period & you will get the balance of the warranty, the only thing you need to do (as with any car) is to make sure the vehicle is ... ...OK.
However, buy a used car over three years old or when the manufacturers warranty has finished & you'll need to purchase a used car warranty if you want some peace of mind. Unfortunately used car warranties are not as generous as new car warranties & this leads to confusion & complaints from car owners.
Apart from our homes, the car is likely to be the second most expensive thing most of us will purchase in out lifetime. Cars are complex machines ...

Advantages: some but not many Disadvantages: Expensive
...you purchase a car the dealer always states that you must bring it back to them for a service or it will negate your warranty, is this so!
I recently purchased a new car from a Rover dealer and it was a Hyundai Accent. I decided to put it in for a service with my normal garage as the service is usually cheaper by about £50 compared to dealer prices. Unfortunatly two weeks after the service there was a major problem and the car wouldn't start. I ... ...So I contact the Rover dealer they check out the engine and change a couple of parts and send me on my merry way. One week later the car broke down again and then the Rover dealer organised for the car to go into the Hyundai dealer. Hyundai put the car on their computer and found that it has a problem with the chip in the key and informed me that it must be changed. So next we look at the warranty and has the service affected it? Hyundai informed ...

Advantages: repairs paid for Disadvantages: costs of maintaing your vehicle
To a consumer, manufacturer servicing and warranty procedures can be a minefield. When buying your new car you hardly give a second thought to servicing it, or even worse, you may have problems and break down.
A lot of consumers when buying a car are aware of (as a general rule) a 3 year or 60,000 mile manufacturers warranty. Now this does not mean that all parts are covered for a full three years, this is a very important statement to remember ... ...this. Items such as clutches/brakes etc, are normally onlt covered for the first year or up to 20,000 miles, the reason being is later on down the line they are classed as a wear and tear item. So please refer to your vehicles handbook and get a clear understanding of what items are covered when trying to make a claim.
WIth regards to servicing and warranty. Most manufacturers state that you do not have to have your servicing carried out with them ...

Advantages: They hoovered the car first time round Disadvantages: Poor diagnosis of problem, very rude
A quick note on my recent experience with Witherspoon VW - a service centre for VW and Audi vehicles based in Sighthill Industrial Estate, Edinburgh.
Around two weeks ago a put my Audi A4 in for a basic service. In addition, the car was pulling to one side and there was a 'judder' on braking and I asked that these two problems be fixed at the same time.
Witherspoon charged around £150 for a 4 wheel alignment in addition to the service cost. They ... ...was clean and hoovered so all good so far...
...until I drove it when I discovered that the car was still pulling quite markedly to the same side (even against road camber) and the 'judder' still existed. I duly booked the car back in for them to have another look.
After Witherspoon had examined/test driven the car again they said that the problem might be the anti roll bar bushes and might be the rear discs and they would suggest replacing both ...
