Poetic Genius

AdvantagesWonderfully descriptive poems

DisadvantagesCiao managed to get the title wrong

"...from boarding school following the death of his four-year-old brother in a road accident. He describes how he saw his father crying for the first time, as well as his embarrassment as old men stood up to shake his hand. 'Digging' gives us an insight into Heaney's background growing up on a farm. Here he shows his admiration for his father and grandfather: 'By God, the old man could handle a spade. / Just like his old man.' Heaney ends the poem ..." Read review

Beautiful

AdvantagesStrong yet simple messages

DisadvantagesMay be hard to understand these messages fully for younger readers

"Beautiful poems, with both simple and complex meanings and I definitely recommend it to anyone who appreciates poetry or literature. After studying Heaney's poetry for GCSE, and loving it, I personally went to Heaney's birthplace in Ireland, and now all his poems have an even more vivid meaning to me. My 2 favourites - 'Death of a Naturalist' and 'Digging' 'Death of a Naturalist' tells of a young boy's fascination with nature, presented ..." Read review

Death of a Naturalist (not naturist!)

AdvantagesPowerful sensory imagery, informal colloquial language

DisadvantagesKnowledge about Heaney needed for full appreciation

"...frogs, it's also about the death of childhood innocence. Similarly, the poem 'Follower' is not simply about a man ploughing a field. It discusses the circular nature of life and how the burdens in the parent-child relationship shift over time. You just have to think about the poems a bit to see their importance and appeal. Heaney covers the topics of nature, rural life, close Catholic communities and family relationships in this anthology. The ..." Read review

Trust me i got an A

AdvantagesVery encapsulating

DisadvantagesAll about the outdoors

"I studied Heaney at A Level and found his poems absolutley encapsulating. They are full of enigmatic thought and power, you can sense the reality of the situation and really believe every word. Each poem has its own unique style and format, and excites the senses. I got an A for my essay on Heaney and i think its thanks to the way Heaney himself has delicatley laid each word on the page. Compared to his other works this really has the "extra mile" ..." Read review

skillfull and richly put together

AdvantagesVery easy to read and get the feel of the poem,

DisadvantagesSome images are rather weird

"I studied this poem and some of his others for my English GCSE. At first when i heard we had to study poems I horrified but when i actually stopped and read i realised that they are much deeper than just words. This poem is very cleverly written and the words used create a great atmasphere of unpleasentness which runs throughout the poem.the poem describes firstly how a little boy used to go down to river and collcect tadpoles from it in a glass bottle. ..." cool book

Advantagesgood read

Disadvantagesbit samey

"When I studied this for GCSE I tjought it would be boring but surprisingly it wasn't!!! Heaney is a really good author that writes good poems with real meaning. My favourate Heaney poems are Digging, Mid term break and Follower. They all show Heaney's views on the land, stepping out and many other things. This is a good book of poems to read and it should be read or at least look at Heaney's poems in a collection of some sorts. Many other Heaney ..." Read review
