What they won't tell you... Diamond review

AdvantagesLittle fuss, highly effective contraception

DisadvantagesThe side effects.. Oh, the side effects

"...get it???------ You need to get Depo on prescription from your Doctor. It's remarkably easy to get; go and see your GP, they will ask you some questions about it, take your blood pressure, weigh you and give you a prescription. You then take this to your pharmacy, where you will be given the 150mg suspension in 1mL (with needle and syringe) in a little box. You don't have to pay for it either, because it is contraception and therefore free on the ..." Read review

Just a little prick... Diamond review

Advantageshighly effective; less hassle; maybe your periods will go away!

Disadvantagesas with most medicines there are possible side effects

"Depo-Provera is one of two types of contraceptive injections currently available in the UK. The other is called Noristerat; both injections contain a type of hormone called progestogen (which is meant to mimic the effects of the female hormone progesterone) and both work in similar ways, however Depo-Provera is the most commonly used out of the two. These injections contain hormones which work in the same way as the pill to prevent unplanned pregnancies ..." Read review

Works for some, but Depo + ME/CFS = hell

AdvantagesHighly effective contraceptive, pretty much foolproof, not a hassle to use

DisadvantagesNightmare side-effects, stays in your system for a very long time, put me into a wheelchair

"...just before the next. Depo works primarily by preventing your ovaries from releasing an egg every month (ovulation). It also thickens the mucus at your cervix, making it harder for sperm to get through and fertilise an egg, and thins the lining of your womb, making it inhospitable to any fertilised eggs (which are exceedingly unlikely to have happened anyway). Depo Provera has an efficacy rate of over 99% in both typical and perfect use, which ..." Read review

Great for me but not for everyone

AdvantagesExcellent for me

DisadvantagesSome people get bad side effects

"WHAT IS DEPO PROVERA? Depo Provera is a progestogen only contraceptive. The contraceptive will work from a week after first using it. It is over 99% effective and unlike some other contraceptives does not contain estrogen which can increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis and stroke. Depo provera also reduced the risk of endrometrial cancer by 80%. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? You can get this injection in your doctor or family planning clinic for free, ..." Read review

Contraception From Hell Diamond review

AdvantagesCan be on it while breastfeeding

DisadvantagesNon-stop bleeding

"...doctor this time suggested the Depo Provera injection, which again can be used when breastfeeding. It all sounded so simple. Visit the nurse every 10-12 weeks, have an injection and forget all about contraception for the next 3 months or so. Perfect for having 2 young children and not having to remember to take the pill every morning if other things are more urgent – something that is usually the case at the start of most days. And another bonus ..." Read review

My Happy Jab

AdvantagesYou may stop having periods

DisadvantagesWeight gain and, oh read on!

"I was on Depo Provera for 3 years before there was a problem with the supply in October 2002, and I had to change my method of birth control. I loved my Depo. My husband called it my “Happy Jab”. I found that I didn’t get any PMT, and as I had spotting 10 weeks after each injection, the doctor allowed me to have the injection every 10 weeks (normally every 12 weeks), and I therefore had no periods whatsoever for almost 3 years. So how does Depo ..." Read review

Depo Provera (injected birth control) is Poison

Advantagesprevents pregnancy

Disadvantagespotential major side effects

"I had no significant health issues prior to taking Depro, had maintained the same weight, give or take 5 lbs., for many yrs., and had no issue taking the weight off when it did fluxuate. I received my last shot in Nov. of 2006 (I received four shots total) and today am still experiencing many side effects. While taking Depro, my symptoms included excessive weight gain, major circulation issues (my arms would fall asleep repeatedly-very painful), chest ..." Read review

DEPO PROVERA INJECTION

AdvantagesONLY NEED TO THINK ABOUT CONTRACEPTION 4 TIMES A YEAR

DisadvantagesSIDE EFFECTS IF YOU'RE UNLUCKY

"the injection : DEPO PROVERA!!!!! I had the Depo Provera injection six months after having my baby as I could no longer keep up the responsibility of taking the pill every day. WHERE DO YOU HAVE IT? ************************** Normally this is given in your gluteus maximus (the posh name for the muscle of your arse cheeks! Simply because a lot of fat (for most of us anyway) is stored here, which makes it easier and less painfull for the injection ..." Read review

Depo Provera - Goood or bad idea??

AdvantagesStops periods altogether

Disadvantagesso so many, wieght gain being one of them

"...they should start to use Depo Provera. This is a contraceptive injection. It is injected into the buttocks, usually alternatively, every 10-12 weeks. The dates are important as if you are too late, you will need to use alternative method of contraceptive for 7 days. I started to take this injection in May 2002 when I met my then boyfriend (now husband). I was not able to take the pill after an attack of phlebitis in my right leg and the Depo was ..." Read review

Great form of contraceptive

AdvantagesStops periods, no weight gain, no fuss, more temporary than an implant

DisadvantagesNone

"...17, and I started using Depo Provera when I was 16. I visited my doctor who recommended this form of contraception after a consultation. She went over all the possible side effects, as well as the hightened risk of osteoporosis developing. I'm lactose intolerant, so ever since using Depo Provera, I've had to take 2 calcuim supplements a day. Going for the jab is simple. I had to go and collect my syringe at the chemist, give it to my nurse and ..." Read review

So i have had this now for over 1 year and i am still underweight...very strange as the doctors or nurses have never seen this before. I nearly died from a contraceptive.

AdvantagesLasts 3 months.

DisadvantagesSerious side effects.

"I nearly died from Depo Provera & think it should come with a warning before it's given. It's a contraceptive injection that is given to women as 1 injection in the buttock. They contraceptive effects last approximately 12 weeks. The medicine comes in small vials that the Dr open to inject into you. It's very thick stuff & my Dr complained that it hurt her thumbs to push the syringe !!! I had the Depo-provera shot in October 1997 & instantly ..." Read review

The Fat Injection

Advantagesstoped me from getting pregnant

Disadvantageshave put on a lot of weight

"I call the depo the fat injection because this is what I feel it is. After having my daughter I decided to breast feed and as the pill I had been taking since I was 14 (Microgynon 30) affects the flow of milk I had to go on the mini pill. The mini-pill made me feel sick and gave me such bad headaches I could not lift my head from the pillow, which was not a bad thing in the early days as my daughter was constantly feeding. I decided the best ..." Read review
