    Disadvantages Disadvantages Compensation is paid is in form of gift cards to specific retailers. Cash would be more flexible.

    BACKGROUND As a Direct Line (DL) car insurance customer, I was offered the opportunity to take out home contents cover at a special 25% discount for existing customers. Having been with Norwich Union (now Aviva) for a while and experiencing ambivalent service when I needed them, I decided to go for it. Norwich Union may have “quoted me happy” when I first took out cover, but their renewal premium (I had made no claims at he time) left me cold and decidedly unhappy.     We were recently looking to renew our household insurance and decided to compare quote rather than just continuing with the company we were with. Several of the quotes were very competitive, but only if we reduced the amount of cover we required. It was difficult to find a company offering the same cover at a reasonable cost. Having our car insured with Direct Line for a couple of years and being happy with the service, we rang for a quote.     My contents and building insurance have been through Direct Line for the last five years and I really cant rate them enough. It was really easy to start the policies as it was all done over the phone and then they send you the policy through the post which you sign. You are sent a booklet which explains exactly what you are covered for and what you are not. The biggest downside with Direct Line has to be the fact that if you want to pay monthly then you have to pay interest. Putting this aside though, the prices do seem very reasonable.     The value of an insurance company to the public is surely in it's ability to handle claims - that is after all, what they are basically selling. I was unfortunate enough to have two claims in the last year and they were dealt with on both occasions by courtious, knowledgeable, and efficient staff. My lasting memory however, is of their empathy for my situation, rather than mechanisticly gathering information about the claim, we had a conversation about what had happened and I left the conversation in a much better frame of mind than when I started.     I realise that I am probably similar to most people when it comes to insurance, whether vehicle or home and contents, I ring around and end up taking up the cheapest quote. I'm one of those people who thinks of insurance as a necessary evil and begrudge paying out for something that I will never make use of. So, when I moved into my first house last year I did the usual ringing around, and because I was with Direct Line for my Motor Insurance they gave me an additional discount for holding more than one policy with them.     After seeing countless ads on the tv i finally took a look at their website, as i had just moved in with a friend from work and purchased a pc i thought i'd try a quote for home insurance. Everything was easy to follow and helpful links provided answers to any questions that appeared in my noggin.I entered my details and after a few minutes i was at the final part of choosing which type of insurance would suit me best.I was expecting a low quote as i was only after contents insurance as i was rented the house.     Disadvantages Disadvantages Policy Wording does not cover everything you need to avoid problems when claiming

    My experiance of Directline is this I took out a policy with them and as a result of a fire at the begining of september 2003 I had to make a claim. The oridginal customer service person could not comprehend the fact that the fire brigade and council requested scaffolding to keep the building upright and as a result it was uninhabitable due to being completely gutted. I found their customer service staff unhelpfull and rude at times and take as long as they can get away with to answer enquirys. Their online policy documentation fails to disclose they do not cover flat roofs if the flat roof ... more

    I would recommend Direct Line Home Insurance to anyone who would listen. Last year, we were unfortunate enough to be burgled on Christmas Day whilst out visiting relatives. As you can image, I was devastated and wanted to get everything back to normal as soon as possible. I rang Direct Line on Boxing Day still very upset and they were brilliant. The staff were really friendly and helpful. They were well informed and dealt with my claim immediately.     Direct Line are a company I have used for years and years. I always shop around when a renewal arrives, to make sure I get the best deal available. Between car insurance, house insurance and holiday insurance I must have had around 10 different policies with themn over the years. In terms of the quotes recieved, they are always competitive and very often the best I have been able to get. They made their mark by setting up telephone insurance a few years back and most big companies caught up with them and offered a similar service.
