‘Direct Line & Sinker’ I am a dissatisfied Direct Line Rescue (ex)customer. I, like many others, took the time and effort to shop around for my motor insurance, when I got the lowest quote available on the market from ‘DL’, I was astonished to see that the premium was a LOT lower than the main rivals, so much so in fact, that upon speaking to one insurer to ask for a comparison, they asked who I had spoken to so far and the poor girl on the other end of the line could not get off the phone quick enough after the hearing the words ‘Direct’ and ... more

1 year ago I decided to purchase Car Breakdown cover as I was travelling down to Chester from Kirriemuir (Scotland) every 2 weeks, and my partner and I were also commuting 40 miles a day to University with having a P reg Fiesta I was sure that she would one day fail on us! So I set about shopping about, I came across direct line through the website, I had read alot of good reviews on the companies Breakdown service. What sold me the cover was > 10% discount for buying online > Average response time of around 40 minutes > No call out discount after one year > 8 out of ten cars fixed at the ... more

I've just read an op on Directline Rescue which was less than flattering shall we say. My own experience has been good so far. My husband and I bought our first little car about 4 months ago. I rang all the insurance agencies for quotes, to find that Directline wasn't only the cheapest but had great service. I don't actually drive, I've held a provisional licence for 12 years but never got any lessons. Directline actually lowered the premium when I was added to the policy as a learner driver! But I digress. This op is about their rescue service. Upon buying out M reg Ford Fiesta we decided to ... more

    Advantages Advantages Brilliant Service

Disadvantages Disadvantages Average cost - but you get what you pay for.

Direct Line rescue are admittedly my first rescue company, although I would happily recommend them to anyone. I had to shop around and although I have since changed, this was merely because I couldn't afford to keep up the payments. I am not complaining, if I could afford to go with Direct Line again then I undoubtedly would, and their rates for older drivers are certainly very competitive, but not for younger drivers. I am only 18 and just switched, but I had to call upon Direct Line twice in my time with them. My first occassion was in Scotland - well almost!. I was on a cross country drive ... more

Since I don't know anything about cars and travel 50 miles to work everyday, I recently decided to take up a breakdown cover. Obviously I compared prizes and services and asked friends for their experiences. Based on this, I decided to join Direct Line. They offer: - 24 hour assistance, 365 days a year - Over 6,000 selected breakdown specialists nationwide - Quick response time (they claim less than 40 minutes in average) - 10% discount in the following year, if they are not called out for one year Depending on your needs and the prize you want to pay, they offer a number of different ... more

I have been insured by Directline now for nearly five years, every time |I renewed my insurance they offered me the chance to join there breakdown service.I all ways refused as my cars were new and were already covered through another breakdown company. I have just purchased a second hand car, insured again through Directline and this time I have taken out Directline rescue. This was offered at a discount of 30% as i am already a valid customer, if you dont call out the rescue service within the 12 month period you get an extra 10% off the next years premium. As far as I am aware, Directline are ... more

Direct Line this, direct line that. I anticipate they have a hidden agenda.....to rule the World. O. K. So I have thrown a tantrum. They did do something for the car insurance market but at a price to us all. Unless you fit exactly the criteria set fro each company by its actuaries you probab;ly will not get a quote but instead have to trawl the secondary market and pay a hefty price to boot. You do not have to be a bad risk to fall in this category its just that they do not want your business. The chap who started the idea of course made an absolute fortune for which he has yet to thank us ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Will not carry pets in the cab of the breakdown vehicle, even if own vehicle has caught fire.

Three weeks ago I had a very frightening experience. 5am on Sunday morning a friend and I were travelling from Lincolnshire to Somerset to attend a Championship Dog Show. We had two dogs in the car with us. 15-20 minutes from home, my car came to a grinding halt. When I got out of the car to look for the telephone number of the breakdown service, which was in my handbag on the back seat of the car, I noticed smoke coming from under the bonnet. I immediately instructed my friend to get out of the car and help me get the dogs out and get away from the car as it had a full tank of petrol. I then ... more

Whilst Direct Line used to be easily the cheapest car insurance they are now really not. Its so boring how insurers start cheap and then assume we're all too stupid to change our insurance policy operator. Direct Line are now expensiv and far more so than Tesco who use exactly the same underlying insurance company. Moreover, Direct line do automatic direct debit renewals. This means that if you don't contact them to terminate an insurance policy then renew it automatically and are allowed to automatically apply a direct debit instruction even if its has been cancelled. Another example of ... more

After becoming a member with both the RAC and the AA and feeling totally ripped of by both I joined Direct Line Rescue accidentally. I applied for their insurance and was offered breakdown cover at a much lower rate than either of the other two could achieve. My main gripe with both the RAC and AA was that even when I had not used their service for a whole year my premiums seemed to rocket annually. Direct Line promised a discount if I did not need to use them (touch wood I haven't so far) I thought I needed them once and they promised to be there in 30 minutes even though the car was only ... more
