The Sin taxes We are in the age of the nanny state where there is not a single bit of fun someone in power does not want to discourage with a tax or ‘minimum price.’ During the past month we have heard about the pasty tax, an increase in tax on fizzy drinks and this week has brought the minimum alcohol pricing announcement in Scotland. Campaigners and politicians state that consumers of ‘unhealthy’ products put an excessive burden on public services and cite astronomical figures as being the ‘cost to the taxpayer.’ This therefore justifies the additional taxation in order to reduce the overall ... more

Advantages Advantages It might tackle some problems

Disadvantages Disadvantages But it's not clear that it does and there are probably better ways not violating individual liberty

Alcohol pricing is very much in the news these days, particularly in Scotland (the SNP failed to introduce a minimum unit price in the last parliament but, now with a majority in Holyrood, are attempting it again). What’s not entirely clear, however, is why this policy is being proposed. Some argue that excessive drinking is harmful for society. People may, for instance, be more likely to commit violent crimes while drunk, or they are a drain on the NHS. These claims, I think, have some merit, but they’re not obviously arguments in favour of minimum pricing. If our concern is with alcohol ... more

The Coalition’s ‘Alcohol Strategy’ program is looking to implement minimum pricing of alcohol across the spectrum by 2015. Alcohol pricing strategists in Whitehall are looking to set the price per unit of alcohol between 40 – 50 pence. Fifty pence, is the trial monetary unit price, evidently going to be in Scotland, where there is a growing alcohol problem. Alcohol has blighted generations of Britons; it is legal, yet alcohol, is the most harmful drug, long term for everyone. The destruction alcohol leaves behind its wake, is undeniably a National problem. Britain is a drinking culture; older ... more

Advantages Advantages stops ridiculous drinks promos

Disadvantages Disadvantages won't change the culture of drinking

Our towns and cities have become no go zones after dark; we have all seen the pictures of skimpily dressed young women passed out drunk by the side of the road while the guys throw punches at each other before heading for a kebab and a taxi home. My local town even has street pastors at the weekend who volunteer their services to pick up drunks and keep them safe from themselves and each other. Binge drinking is estimated to cost the country £20 billion a year in costs to the NHS, policing, and various other things. One in 26 hospital admissions in the UK are drink related and alcohol plays a ... more

Advantages Advantages Cutting booze is healthy

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Less tax?

There’s always a contradiction when governments make policy on our vices. On the one hand they want us to stop doing them because they are health and socially damaging and so expensive in the long term but on the other had they miss the vast taxation they make from them so don’t go the whole hog to ban them. Blair and Brown pushed the green agenda with higher fuel taxes and congestion charges; we thought to get us out of our cars and onto public transport. But once we parked up and took the bus and train they trebled those fares and so forced many back into cars, generating that juicy petrol ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages binge drinking, young people drinking

Minimum pricing of alcohol - would it help?I've not taken part in the discussion of the "current" issue on Ciao very often. A lot of time I hesitate because I feel I don't know enough about the topic. But as a person who enjoys the occasional recreational drink and who's young and not exactly rich, I have an opinion on the topic!Like most young people, I like drinking an alcoholic beverage now and then. But even for me, there are different kinds of drinking. There's the drinking I take part in that happens in pubs or cafés and has more of a social factor. Almost every Thursday I go to a certain ... more

Advantages Advantages Will discourage binge drinking and lead to fewer alcohol related deaths and injuries.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Another nanny state measure that means more Government interference in our lives.

I think that setting a minimum price for alcohol is justified for a number of reasons. This issue is particularly relevant at the current time, with the Scottish Government announcing that it wishes to set a minimum price of 50p per unit for alcohol. David Cameron has called for a consultation on whether similar measures should be introduced in England and Wales. Every weekend hundreds of intoxicated people place an additional burden on the NHS. In 2010 35% of all A&E admissions were alcohol related, this rises to 70% at weekends. During such tough economic times, we as a country can no ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Less money for the customer.

I used to enjoy having a drink or two (and to my non-amusement I still do at times), but I would just like to write a word or two about my own views on whether there should be a fixed minimum price or no for alcoholic drinks. And in my own personal opinion, my own answer would be a resounding yes - but for every single establishment that sells alcohol, for reasons that I will be going in to at various different points during the course of my review. The reason for me saying that this should be applied to every single establishment that sells alcohol is because when people think of buying an ... more

Advantages Advantages Could put a stop to binge and under-age drinking.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Could end up being way to expensive.

~ Should a minimum price be put on alcohol? ~As a parent I can see the pro's to there being a minimum price being put on alcohol, when I was a younger (13/14) me and my friends would hang around in a park and drink. The drinks we would buy were white cider - 99p a litre and Lambrini - £1.50 and that would be more than enough to get us drunk, usually too drunk! Now I expect had alcohol cost more then we wouldn't have been drinking and doing the sometimes stupid things that we did.Supermarkets are selling 2 litre bottles of cider for £1.70 or 4 cans of cider for £2. That is really cheap. It's ... more
