Bottle Tops on those Madam? I first got glasses when I was about 7 years old, and I hated them from the word go. I am not sure if any fellow sufferer recalls those awful grey plastic Bottle Top glasses that seemed to be NHS standard provision if you were a child and your parent couldn't afford to pay? That visit to the opticians left me traumatised and feeling physically encumbered with glasses that seemed to give out a statement classing me as a social outcast. Sounds dramatic and theatre worthy I know, but these really were awful glasses and my imagination as a 7 year old was on par with my ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey compared to Specsavers

I've recently started a mystery shopping job and my first assignment was one that I jumped at the chance of carrying out as I was due for an eye test anyway. I had to book an appointment over the telephone, attend and see if I was offered everything on the list. As I live in Scotland my eye test was free anyway on the NHS, but I also have a voucher for my glasses thanks to the family credit we receive so I was entitled to money off my actual purchase. ***Booking The Appointment*** When I phoned up to make my appointment I was dealt with professionally and quickly and asked all the relevant ... more

Since I was in primary school I have been wearing glasses, I’ve always tended to be long sighted – though gradually over the years with age and various other things my eye sight is just getting worse full stop. Anyway, as a kid my parents used to take me to the ONLY opticians in our town – Dolland and Aitchinson. A woman optician was my eye tester for many years until ill health forced her to retire. Dolland and Aitchinson have come a long way since my childhood days, and are now a common sight in most towns and cities. But with the arrival of stores like: Spec savers and Vision Express they ... more

I would just like to write a review of these opticians, based on my experiences after having my eyes tested (or rather re-tested after another one made a muckup) and theh subsequent purchase of glasses from them. Why choose Dolland and Aitchison (hereafter known as D&A for ease of use)? I had previously had my eyes tested elsewhere, as I use glasses for driving I just went back to the place I went to before. After having my eyes tested, I was told that my eyes had not changed and so I could carry on using the same glasses that I had been using for theh two years previously. But I thought that ... more

Now, while D and A may not remember my name like my old optician, I'm more than willing to forgive them. The service I've received has always been professional and friendly. I was tempted away from my old optician by the big special offer signs offering contact lens trials. It's not the kind of thing I'd usually do, but well over a year later, I'm really glad I made the jump. At the moment, I have soft lenses that you wear during the day then clean and store overnight. These arrive through my letterbox every month without fail for £16.50 a month including all my consultations and check-ups. It ... more

Dolland and Aitchison is a franchise opticians that operates throughout the UK. Now if you are going to have your eyes tested you will choose an optician local to yourself and like everything in the world and life there is good and bad in everything. So when I speak about my experiences will D&A then I speak directly about the Stafford branch with which I am familiar - this can in no way represent the whole of D&A although their services are uniform. I have been with D&A for a little over 10 years now since I first realised that my eyesight was not what it used to be. Certainly at the Stafford ... more

WOW now that's what I call service. Last year both me and the wife were with another Opticians (see my other review!!), however, this year we decided we needed a better service so off we went to D&A in Bath. The wife and I have both been glasses wearers for many years now and after the service from D&A we asked the question why we have not been coming here for the last 17 years. We got to our appointments and we went in on time!!! (that's never happened to us before!) The eye test itself was thorough, we both had tests carried out on our eyes that have never been done before. The whole test ... more

Advantages Advantages You get a thorough eye test but don't expect to get all your results!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor customer service, product knowledge of their own range

Having had glasses since the age of 11 I have been using private opticians for over 20 years and started to get fed up with the lack of choice so thought I'd pay a visit to the D&A store in Cheltenham. This is my experience: Eye Test The optician I saw was really nice and put me at ease so this was a good start. The number of tests I had was very comprehensive as I would have expected as a potential new customer. I was advised on my prescription and given (some - more later) of measurements on a customer care card and then handed over to the shop staff. Choosing my glasses and customer service ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Supposed the hassle free way to get contact lenses - I think NOT!!!

Think I'll go to specsavers for my daily disposable contact lenses from now on!! Sorry if this is a bit long-winded but I want to tell the whole story.... I had been a customer of D& A for many years spending 100s with them on specs and lenses and until recently was very happy. My West London branch had an amazing range of specs, great service and always delivered what they said they would when they said they would - including contact lenses! I used to use the contact lenses by post (CLBP) service and it worked well enough except that I ended up with too many so decided to cancel it and just ... more

I was devastated at the age of 8 when the optician said I needed glasses. I have an older sister who has perfect eyesight and so it was grossly unfair that I should have to be afflicted. My mum promised me she would bye me some nice specs which lessened the blow, but in reality she made me get some pink NHS Ones! Oh how much embarrassment can an 8 year old take! This is why when I could afford to buy my own eyewear, I made sure I got the best available, in the hope that no one would remember me in my pink glasses. I chose Dolland & Achinson after using a smaller local opticians for years ... more
