Advantages Advantages Nice graphics, huge environments, decent boss battles, long play time

Disadvantages Disadvantages Camera and platform elements a bit sloppy, a collect-a-thon

*A review of Donkey Kong 64 for the N64 which primarily focuses on the single-player experience.* King K. Rool is on the verge of destroying the Kong Isle with his Blast-o-Matic, when it fails. Thankfully, his underlings have a plan in which they capture the Kongs and their Golden Bananas, so that if the Kongs escape they'll not do so without their bananas, hence buying them time to fix up the Blast-o-Matic. Cranky's right kids - the story is a load of rubbish! And the cut scenes fail at being funny. When I first played this game I made it to the second level - the size had overwhelmed me and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Totally absorbing gameplay

Disadvantages Disadvantages Returning to previous levels with new characters can be tedious

Rare Software have to be one of the best software producers in my opinion, they always seem to come up trumps with their video games, for the N64 in particular. Following on the heels of the incredibly popular Banjo Kazooie is Donkey Kong, yet another gaming masterpiece that should appeal to all the family. The game is a massive free roaming adventure, there are many levels and secret areas to find and explore, lots to see and do and incredibly playable! Some might at first find the whole game a little overwhelming as there is so much to collect and do, but you soon become familiar with the ... more

Advantages Advantages Amazing Graphics, Great Gameplay, Excellent Multiplayer

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Rareware have produced an incredible amount of really good games in the past and Donkey Kong 64 is definitely the best of the lot. This game is very close to what is known as the PERFECT game; amazing graphics; remarkable gameplay; cool kongs; great sound; and the best multiplayer mode ever. Unlike all DK games in the past, this game is quite different. King K. Rool has stolen all the golden bananas and captured all the kongs, except Donkey Kong, from DK Isles and is planning to blow up the island. Fortunately the machine fails. Will Donkey Kong be able to free his buddies and save DK ... more

    Advantages Advantages MASSIVE Gametime

Disadvantages Disadvantages A Little Too Massive

If you go monkeys for monkeys, then this is definitely the game for you. Donkey Kong’s back with new family members, who each have their own unique abilities. The Donkey Kong game on the Snes was revolutionary in the fact that Rare had used to 3D modelling to create amazing characters who looked like they should be on a 32-bit computer. The game was a sell-out. Now comes the 4th game in the series, Donkey Kong 64. Will this be just as revolutionary? First off are the new characters. There’s now Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong, Chunky Kong and Lanky Kong. Each of them has their ... more

Advantages Advantages The graphics, the sound, th playability....Everything

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing

Rare spared no expense recreating Kong for the third dimension. A huge quest, intuitive controls, deep mechanics, mini-games, relentless exploration, five different characters to play with and knockout graphics. Players begin as Donkey, acquiring basic moves in a training level. From there, it's all exploration--picking up bananas, medals, and more, rescuing the four other Kongs, conquering puzzles and mini-games, and continuing the quest. DK64 has outstanding control mechanics. Each character starts with a basic set of moves. As the adventure progresses, each ape gains a specific arsenal of ... more

Advantages Advantages Looks good, good music, BIG game

Disadvantages Disadvantages poor gameplay, lack of originality

After Rare's innovative, original, funny and VERY playable series of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES it is a great disappointment to have such an unoriginal, repetitive and sometimes boring game representing the great ape on the N64. Taking the concept of the 2D platformer and moving it into 3D like "Mario 64" Rare have created a technically proficient but soulless game. Start the game with Donkey Kong and pick up 4 other family members along the way - each one has special skills suited to certain areas/problems. The problem is we've seen it all before - the impact of a REAL interactive 3D ... more

    Advantages Advantages Excellent game

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some parts you really need to practice at

I had DK64 as a present for Christmas last year and didn't stop playing it for weeks. It is one of the most addictive games I have ever played. In basic terms it is a 3D platform game but in reality it is much more than that. Each world is so huge it takes ages just exploring them let alone finding what you are looking for. Every time you start the game you are told what percentage you have completed which gives you something to aim at. The characters themselves are excellent with each one having their own manerisms if you leave them standing about for too long. This is a game you will love ... more

    Advantages Advantages Graphics, Gameplay, Addictive

Disadvantages Disadvantages Camera, DK Arcade, Expansion Pac if you have one

The first thing you get when turning on the cart was actually quite a surprise to me. You get three minutes of...a rap song, introducing DK and his friends to you. This isn't actually bad, and sets the scene for the rest of the game fairly well. Yet another Rare game, this is one of their best games so far. One thing that strikes you from the start is how similar to Banjo Kazooie this is. It is very similar, but different enough to be well worth the money. The graphics are very good - so good, in fact, that they included an expansion pac in the package, which annoyed people that had already ... more

Advantages Advantages great graphics and fun to play

Disadvantages Disadvantages can only be bought new with an expansion pack

This was the game of the year in my view when it was realesed. But i still dont think that it was better than Rare's fellow platformer , Banjo Kazooie. I felt that although DK64 had lots of original ideas it seemed to also steal a lot from Banjo Kazooie. However DK64 had the all important multiplayer and a great one at that. Despite what many reviews said about the multiplayer , i felt that it was excelent and so did my friends. Another area where DK64 was excelent was in the fact that you could play as one of any 5 , very different individual characters, all with separate special abilities ... more

Advantages Advantages Great fun to play. Challenging

Disadvantages Disadvantages Flying through rings with Diddy is too hard!

I received this game as a Christmas present from my wife, and we both think that it's awesome! Since Xmas many evenings have been spent guiding this strange collection of monkeys past various baddies, and solving puzzles. After 1 month we've both comitted around 25 hours to it, and there's still quite a bit of the game left to play! The story to the game is nothing special. King K Rool has kidnapped Donkey Kong's buddies, and stolen his gold bananas. So you take on the part of Donkey Kong and try to find your bananas. Once you've freed the other Kongs, you can also play the game as each of ... more
